The most available substitute: Lagunita's Hop Stoopid. It's the village bicycle of great DIPA's.

Some other good ones that give Pliny a run...
    Ballast Point Sculpin
    Bell's HopSlam
    Oskar Blues Deviant Dale's

All drank fresh as possible, of course.

With Sucks in ample supply who cares about hard to find IPAs. You can't get much better outside of fresh growler fills of Bodhi, Pupil, TH, Abner, etc...

um, pretty much any IPA ever. Pliny is a run of the mill IPA. why don't you pick up some sierra nevada torpedo, deschutes inversion, odell IPA, etc? stop idolizing one particular IPA. heck, stop idolizing the IPA style.

Since you're looking for a second relationship , maybe you could go from (Pliny) The Elder to (Goose Island) Lolita. I keed, I keed.

Supplement it? Eh, I'm sure those ideas have been beaten to death here. Let me suggest an alternative approach. And stay with me...it's going to sound crazy, but it just might work....

    Stop drinking Pliny.

I don't mean forever, but just stop for a few months. I only buy about half a case of my favorite beer any given year. FBS, for example. Soon as I saw it on the shelf in October, I bought a couple of four packs. I still have one bottle left, which probably won't make it past this weekend. After that, I'm done with it. By now, while it's still an amazing beer, it doesn't hold quite the same attraction that it did in October.

Come fall, when it's released again, that's going to be a different story. After over half a year away from that beer, that first sip is like magic. I find myself forgetting just how much I love this beer. So in all seriousness, maybe try putting PtE away for a little while and enjoying whatever other beers you like. When you come back, you just might have a whole new love for it.

This isn't a pissing match guys.. It's beer and everybody has their own opinion.

To the OP. Pliny is one of my favorite IPAs and I usually find Sucks and Enjoy By nice replacements. They are different, but they are both world class IPAs IMO.

You would need to trade for it, but DC Brau's On the Wings of Armageddon is supposed to be pretty spectacular. Never had it myself, though.

Where in CA do you live? I am happy to help you find more Pliny if needed. That is of course, if you don't find anything better.

    Going behind Pliny's back.. well....
Drakes Hopocalypse is awesome - worthy of a secret weekend in paradise - if you can get some.
Green Flash Palate Wrecker is so juicy this year - IMHO, its WAY better than previous versions. Amazingly good.. and my palate just screams for more. Yum!

I would say Three Floyd's Dreadnaught is a very similar brew to Pliny. Definitely try that one.

Try this if you can find it fresh, you'll be amazed:

Or this if you want to crank it up a notch:

These should be readily available in the Bay Area. If you haven't tried them, you're missing out. Award winning chit!

Add to that just about damn near any IPA from Alpine and you got my vote. And if you ever get to San Diego stop by Societe Brewing and try their IPA The Pupil. It will blow your mind. Oh and for a beer that I think is an absolute equalizer (IMHO) to PtE, is Stone Enjoy By. Just finished my last bottle of 2/14/14 and OMG was it good.

I didn't read thru every response but in my opinion just appreciate each individual IPA/DIPA for what it is. It's like trying to find the next Jordan or (the greatest basketball player to touch the hardwood) Bird. Everyone's game in the beer business is different and the great ones stand out in their own way.

Honestly just buy Hop Stoopid if you can't get fresh Pliny. And KRBC Citra may just beat them all. As mentioned above Alpine IPA's indeed rule but are quite different than Pliny. Vive la difference!
