How do you pronounce Rochefort?

    I was saying Ro-sha-fort.

    A buddy corrected me "Ro-keh-fort"

    I read online somewhere "Rosh-for"

    Anyone definitively know how to pronounce this?

    I've heard it pronounced "Rosh-Fare" and that sounded nice and fancy so I say that.

    My understanding is that the Abbey is in French-speaking Belgium.

    The French pronunciation is undoubtedly Rōsh-for. The O is long, as in "know."

    You see my predicament? There have been four different pronunciations posted thus far. Do you speak French, thewrongtone? Because your answer seemed the most definitive.

    This is closest to correct in this thread. The IPA for the city is ʁɔʃ.fɔʁ R as in roue, O as the o in sort in english. che as the SH in shoe. F, o as in sort again, and that same french r at the end no T.

    Thanks. I guess I'll go with Rosh-for with a long "O" in "rosh" until someone else corrects me.

    It's pronounced "Roke-e-fore" (the e is more like an eh, not eeeee) There is a French cheese bearing the same name (which is equally as amazing as the beer).

    P.s., my wife is a French Professor and this is how she pronounces it. Pretty sure she's right.

    My trick for these hard-to-pronounce names is to use Google Translate.

    The key is that you have to select the correct language of origin before you use the audio component. Obviously, it won't always be as good as asking a native speaker, but it's a pretty good approximation in most cases.
