Same. I think that's why Allagash Tripel, for example, is such a great beer: it's not an American take on a Belgian beer. It is a Belgian beer.

Not too many American Belgians can make that kind of claim. NEBCO makes a pretty good Belgian strong pale ale with 668; seeing as Upslope's BPA is limited release, you might try seeking it out and seeing how it stacks up to your expectations.

    New Schwarzbier Sunday.
Greetings NBS-ers! As the weather in Southeast Alaska seems to be shedding its winter coat with temps in the 40's to low 50's, I figured I'd give this Sunday up for a schwarzbier. Though not new to Beer Advocate, it was new to me yesterday. This beer has a decent sessionable aspect to it but still one that doesn't scream I'm ready for hot weather (haha, its not like I get that sort of weather around here,). I almost don't see enough of this style done these days or at least where I live.

Well, apparently I was slacking, as I hadn't added the other new brewery in town yet. I just submitted it, so I'll just give a quick thumbnail. It doesn't technically qualify for NBS, as I had a few earlier in the week, but I throw myself on the mercy of Matt.

Wander Brewing Belgian Blonde: Served in a Nonic, Wander's Blonde is unfiltered at all and is a cloudy, opaque, yellow with about 1/4 inch of white head. The nose has a nice grain base, and some fruity-floral yeast tones. The yeast is dominant on the tongue, with the grain giving a good foundation. Medium bodied, with a tangy, dry finish. Easily drinkable, it sneaks up on you after a few. The breweries tasting room should be open in a few weeks, and I look forward to trying more of their brews.

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,

It's in the low 50s in the largest city between Seattle and Minneapolis, and the sun is mostly unopposed. I'm enjoying another of what for the last couple of months has been a rarity: an entire weekend off with no having to go out of town for one reason or another.

Had myself an IPA from Amnesia, brewed in Washougal, WA.

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/9685/106423/?ba=woemad

Nothing mindblowing, just an excellent version of what to expect from an IPA brewed in the PNW, though I seem to like it more than a lot of others, so take it with a grain of salt. BTW, wasn't Amnesia a Portland brewery? If I'm right about that (always a loaded question), why did they hop across the Columbia? I'm curious...

Later on today I may venture out to a local brewery, or grab a pint or two this evening at Jones, depending on what movie Nehemiah chooses to play. Cheers!

    New (Wannabe) IPA Sunday.

Greetings all and happy NBS. It's a beautiful sunny 77 degree Spring day here at the Jersey Shore. In making the most of this great day, I woke up the convertible from it's long winter nap and backed it out of the garage. Then I headed out for a round of golf. I was in the mood for an IPA as my post-round refreshment, the dive bar had this on tap today: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/35/95386/?ba=NiceTaps.

For me, Sam Adams beers generally come up short. Rebel IPA was no exception.

I felt like hearing this one today. Hopefully, you'll enjoy it, too.

Time to see how the Masters is going...and to get a beer that I'll truly enjoy.
    All the best everyone!

A fine afternoon to you all my fellow NBS'ers.
Today I'm trying out my new snifter and filling it with Bestiarius a bourbon barrel aged porter. At 11.8% abv the alcohol dominates on the first sip when chilled but mellows a bit as it warms in the hand. As flavor goes bourbon and smoke come in heavy cold and give way to a surprisingly fruity flavor of raisins and dark berries as it sits. The mouthfeel is a bit thinner than what I was expecting given the dark color and bottle description.
For my second glass I've had some coffee resting in it for about 10 minutes, because... well I like coffee in dark beer darn it. Any way with this addition the alcohol and fruit recedes drastically to the background while chocolate and smoke become more evident.[IMG]
Overall I think Shipyard (who I really don't expect too much from) did a pretty good job with this one and I may even be tempted to try the others in their gladiator series.

Dinner is squash lasagna and summer wheat. The lasagna is baby friendly and pretty good. Yuengling did a nice job with this hefe; the beer won't make me forget the top tier hefes, but 7 bucks for a sixer might.

    Cheers again!

Second brew of the day, but first time having this.

    Grassroots Legitimacy IPA.

Got this growler yesterday at the brewery.

A: Light, hazy, golden yellow. Small head that fades rather quickly leaving slight lacing.
S: Lemony citrus with fresh hops. Slight maltiness.
T: You get predominantly a lemon/orange/citrus punch. The hops are there, but not on the forefront. I tend to like very citrusy brews so I really enjoy this.
M: Really good and well balanced. Exactly what I was expecting.
O: Great overall IPA and worth seeking out if you're a huge fan of citrus forward IPA's.

    Cheers all!

    Greetings All:

I'm having Pelican Silverspot IPA. A really good English Style IPA.

Shiny gold with an incredibly crisp and zesty character. Very good indeed.

Seasonal here in the great northwest. I got most of the early garden vegetables planted yesterday. Lettuce, cabbage, peas, onions. Today it's just beer and final round of The Masters, before the grill fires up.

Here is the Silverspot amid the falling apricot blossoms.

    Happy Trails!

Good afternoon NBS friends! I got some new IPAs (to me at least) today and I'm trying (and enjoying) the first as I watch the end of the Masters. Stone Go To IPA. Boy this is a solid beer, and I can dig this trending style. Nice hop flavor and really better than I anticipated. If only it were canned... My review is here:

    New American Red/amber Ale Sunday

    Greetings NBS,

Looks like an action packed day on this fine thread, looking forward to reading about some NB's.

This was a glorious weekend here in Southern, CT with bright sunny skies and spring temps. The weather folk state this was the first time CT saw 70 degrees since 10/17/13. Freightening.

Family time, chores, outdoor exercise were all on tap this weekend.

I think Maine Beer Co is becoming a fave of mine. They don't make a bad brew:

I'm a huge fan of Rochefort 10, ranking it in my top 2 or 3 beers all time. Yet, this is my first time getting around to it's sibling, Rochefort 8. This one happens to be around a year old. The weather is gorgeous, and it's about time to enjoy the fleeting sun on the back deck while I still can.

Very traditional Dubbel/BSDA: sweet, fruity, yeasty, and nutty. Very, very complex brew. It has a long sweet finish reminiscent of caramelized or burnt sugar. After a few American Dubbels lately, this really brings it back home. I wouldn't put it up there with the best BSDAs or Quads, nor would I put it up there with Westmalle or Chimay Dubbel, but it's a very nice beer on its own.

While I love beer trading for the likes of KBS, Founders and Bells beers and other goodies I crave but can't get in NorCal, the extras that @totalbangover throws in are ALWAYS solid.
This is no exception...nice mellow flavor, fruity and hoppy and the nose is damn sexy.[IMG]

Every Shorts beer I get to try seems to be solid though I don't see much love for them here... Wonder why?
