True...it's beer with added ingredients...a shandy. Take whiskey for instance, when you add coke to whiskey it's not whiskey any longer...it's coke and whiskey...a highball.

When you add beer to food while cooking it doesn't lessen the beer or the food? It just changes it's profile, often times with satisfactory results.

At an all day concert last year I enjoyed mixing Sierra Nevada Summerfests and San Pelegrino Aranciata Rossas (blood orange soda) together. Quite tasty and I wasn't completely hammered by the end of the day.

I think many of us BAs tend to view ourselves as purists?

It would be interesting to take a poll and ask how many of us add something to our black coffee, sugar, creme, half & half, honey...something? Then compare the results to how many people are willing to try adding something to their beer. Would they roughly be the same or skewed by our beer perception?

For the record I have had a few shandies that I have liked...several that I did not and drink my coffee black.

Just to pick the nits, an English Shandy is made with beer and a soda similar to the US Sprite. Hardly the same as the American Shandy which is made like this recipe, with lemon or lime juice. I'm thinking BAs should distinguish between the two, just like we distinguish between an American IPA and an English IPA, or a Porter and a Baltic Porter.

    Agreed. I even don't mind Leinenkugel's
Summer Shandy when golfing. However, I had a beer called the Real Slim Shady, and it was an immediate, one sip drain pour.

I also take my coffee black

I like beer mixers...at least many of them. The German equivalents are:

    Radler (helles + lemon/lime soda)
    Russ'n (weiss + lemon/lime soda)
    Alster (Pils + lemon/lime soda)
Diesel or "Colabier" (Pils + Cola...blech!)

It's really great with the Limonata.

A local brewery (Back Bay) just mixes their Steel Pier lager with some minute maid and hell, it tastes great. Simple to make, easy to drink, you can't go wrong.

I don't have them often but a good shandy on a hot summer day is hard to beat.

You mean lemonade? Proper lemonade that is, not the American rubbish made with fruit.

In Britain you can get shandies with a very low alcohol content that are basically viewed as soft drinks (e.g. Shandy Bass).

I knew some younger Brits here visting the US that would make "Turbo Shandies" by mixing Mike's Hard Lemonade with a light beer or pale ale. Pretty easy to drink a lot of these by the pool. I wouldn't waste any craft pale ales making these, but if you need to get rid of some Coors light and Malt lemonade (and you are just looking to get drunk rather than enjoy good beer), it's ok.
