Having a newbie with some simple grilled shrimp tossed in EVOO and Old Bay...yummy...and so is this beer.

Missouri Mule IPA brewed by Piney River Brewing CO. 7% abv, served in a can, bought in a 4 pack of pints, $9.99.

I tend to drink canned beer in the can and that is what I'm doing with this. I buy all my beer in bottles unless I'm going to be drinking in places where cans make more sense. I'm taking a few of these with me to the beach next week and this will work just fine...oh yes...I believe most of Piney River's beer are packaged in cans so that was a factor also

I cracked open the can and breathed in the aroma...big maltiness with a decent citrus background.

First swallow...wow...sweet malt and honey followed by a nice tingle on the tongue from the carbonation. Finishes with orange peel, bitter but clean (there is a lot going on here but you can add your own nouns and adjectives when you try it for yourself).

I bought this after a bottle shop owner suggested it during a conversation on IPAs. I have seen it locally at a few places but kept passing it up because it was in a can...bad decision on my part. This is a very solid IPA, big, bold, clean and balanced...I will be buying again...this might be hard to find but well worth the effort, cheers!

    Oh yes...cool can art!

Hey you guys! ( I have been dying to say that) You been drinking? I been drinking. You'll never guess. . . . go ahead try to guess . . . give up? I'll just tell you. I found a session IPA that I actually like. It's not called that. it's called an ultra pale ale. BUT once I had tasted it I said immediately this is not really pale ale this is a session IPA under that name. It has a lovely flavor and mouthfeel and is only a mere .5% higher than the rest.

This is Mow Maters Ultra Pale Ale by Ellicottville. I love Ellicottville. I discovered this brewery last year when I was burnt out on oktoberfests and I tried theirs and thought "this is darn good." So next I tried their flagship IPA Stainless Steel Obsession and I LOVED it! I mean lot. So I could not get their blueberry wheat which I hear is quite good because I wanted nugget nectar (I am not sorry about that I love the nectar) and when I saw this I said said "Gimme that."

Pours a bright canary yellow. Golden sunshine yellow. Lemon yellow! It's perfectly yellow and hazy with a fat two fingers of cream colored foam that falls lazy and rocky and leaves a thick cap and lace. Nose is lemon and lemon peel. Grapefruit and the pith. A bit of malt sweetness and a sweet grass in the background. some earthy pine but it is terribly light. perfect balance on the nose. The taste is lovely and ultra light. It has only a bit more substance than the session IPA's. But it's there and it is enough to distinguish it. The lemon is bright and sweet, the grapefruit is pungent and earthy. The pine is lightly in the background where I think pine belongs. The malt is just a bit of substance and this finishes a bit crisp and dry with sweet grass to linger and a bit of malt sweetness with all that grapefruit.

Lovely. Another terrific beer from ellicottville. That's three for three that I have tried. I had a hard time rating this. If this is a session IPA then it is in fact, the best one I have tried. if it is a pale ale it is not the best one I have tried. hmmmm.

Took last week off for no reason other than not having anything new but glad to be back.
Saw this one last time I was at my LBS and didn't pull the trigger but did this time.
As the label shows it's a Four Roses BA DIPA. It's also supporting said LBS (Mill Valley Market) and Headlands Brewing Co. so showing local love on two fronts.
Clearly not as hoppy as the regular Hill 88 DIPA due to the Four Roses but still equally enjoyable.
Pours a nice light caramel with a half inch of creamy white head.
A slight sweetness from the bourbon on the nose and mouth.
Good flavor, nice aroma, enjoyable beer. Was hoping for something more like Doom but I realize that would be expecting a lot. None the less, glad I was able to give this a go.

Greetings fellow NBSers! A mostly nice week here in the Fourth Corner, although I did have to work in the rain a bit on Thursday when I was working the door of the beer garden at a local brewery's beer garden. It was OK, because the band was a modern bluegrass band call The Brothers Comatose. Worth checking out if you see them. I also worked a fund-raiser for our local literacy council at the brewery this week, had some great time with my Nephew, the Mastiff, and got to see one of my favorite musicians perform live last night. Pretty solid week over here.

I know you're just dying with curiosity over who the above mentioned musician was. Well, thanks to my friend Val, who works in marketing/artists relations at the venue, and her husband Steve, who gave me a ride to the gig, I got to see this guy open up with this song, although a vastly different version:

So, what are the odds that I, here in the farthest reaches of the contiguous 48, get to be the one that adds a beer from Kentucky to BA? Pretty damn slim, if you had asked me earlier today. Yet, here we are: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/14756/126182/?ba=beertunes . Once the European Kickball frenzy is over for the day, I'll go back and tick the other couple new brews the Copper Hog had on tap today.

Thanks for providing a summary of my life as well. :grinning:
I finally got the branches cleaned up in yard; then I mowed said yard. I guess it is going to storm again tonight and tomorrow... The inlaws also visited this morning (which was nice) so I am kicking off a bit late today. Simply put I will need thirst quenching beer this afternoon.

Westbrook One Claw is a nice APA. They rye and hops play well together. Rye adds a nice light spice and the hops bring some citrus, light orange and tropical notes. Finish is bitter sweet. A tasty beer indeed.

And an awesome play in yesterdays game from the Brewers.

More like a terrible play by the Rockies.

Doesn't it feel good to do everything? ......of course it doesn't. That was both rhetorical and sarcastic. :grinning: Cheers, bro!

    Beer-related: drinking a double-double of Double Trouble.

I was fairly new to craft beer last year when this came out, and the 4-pack I got wasn't perfectly fresh. This time, it's under a month old, and I'm pretty damn familiar with IPAs and DIPAs.

So, while this isn't a new beer for NBS, exactly, I'll take the moment to offer some new perspective.

-I actually stand by my original ratings, exactly. I can now say with a lot more accuracy what hop flavors I'm getting out of it (and I didn't even mention the malts in my original review :grimacing:). Now, I'm noticing a significant pine resin, as well as a noticeable sweet dankness (similar to Mosaic, but not identical; might be the Amarillo dry-hop, but I'm not sure).

-Reinforces that I find this to be an outstanding beer, but a notable step below world-class. It would probably be better regarded as a year-round release; I think it might compare pretty well to Resin and DirtWolf for fridge space, but Hoptimum is just a step above as far as seasonals go, IMO.

There you go, NBSers; a bonus entry!

From Portsmouth New Hampshire: Great Rhythm Brewing Hopstack IPA. 6.5% ABV. Really well balanced between sweet caramel malts and the bitterness of floral hops. This beer was released within the last two months so it is brand new.

I did score another NBS brew earlier, so here it is: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/25922/114450/?ba=beertunes . I'm going to do my part to combat all the bandwagon kickball followers by going to see the local ballclub play. It's beer-related because it pits the Bend Elks (Boo Elks, yay Bend!) versus the Bellingham Bells. A battle of 2 of the top small beer cities in the country. I'll report back later meanwhile, enjoy this: "baby it aint my fault, I love to hear them steel belts hummin' on the asphalt"

New Deschutes Beer in New Deschutes Glass Sunday

Happy Sunday Sultans of Swat. Hard to believe it has been a week already since my being a stickler for details caused a rift in the space-time continuum on WBAYDN. Glad @Greywulfken found a beer that could survive the stretching of the fabric of our existence. Picked up quite a few new beers on Friday. Really regret not picking up a 6 of Smells Like... after the @utopiajane review. Dark Horse makes some really great beers. Most of what I grabbed were single IPAs of some sort. Was always one of my least favorite styles until I got a few ideas from some great BA s that turned the tide. Been revisiting some that I didn't care for at all 4-5 years ago also. Ordered myself a new glass in the anticipation of getting some Black Butte Anniversary edition next week, but going to break it in with this one.
Pours what I would call light black, with a frothy expresso colored head that hangs around awhile and leaves some lacing souvenirs behind. When you stick your nose in it you get roasted malt of a porter and faint hops. Taste gives you some hops up front, then slightly sweet, faint chocolate and roasted beans in a nice malt that is thin and easy to drink. The aftertaste is just slightly bitter combination of the hops and subtle coffee, but smooth. This beer keeps hinting hoppy porter, but has enough of a touch of sweetness to make it a dark ale. I would compare it to a hoppy, sweet, Black Butte Light (new style for love handled porter lovers) On the high end of very good for me. 3.9

Going to throw in a bonus review for those who haven't had it. This one was late last night and did not disappoint.
Gave it a 4.16 overall. I think that is being conservative. I just didn't see it representing the style necessarily. Very tasty none the less. Unique, as most of theirs are, but right up there with Palo Santo and 90 Min. For what it's worth, a am pretty happy with my review. http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/64/18862/?ba=WesMantooth Best (most accurate) one I have done. Enjoy your evening.

Sure enough, a line of storms approaching... I still have to go buy groceries for the week.

Gose Gone Wild is rather awesome. A Gose with the addition of Amarillo hops really is a treat. It is pungent and sour, lemonade, limes, cider vinegar. Hops add the grapefruit and bitterness. Saline is rather mild compared to the WB Gose. I am glad I bought this to try.

    New Saison Sunday

    Greetings NBSer's,
Busy, distracted and preparing for USMT game. Due to a cloudy and muggy day and after frustrating garden work (the rains this week have been quite hard on most of the plants) I'm going with a summer style beer from a class A brewery.

Nicely complex with lots of interesting flavors.

I'd guess you're right that the sweet dank flavor you mentioned is the amarillo, many say candy. I love Double Trouble and the few other simcoe+amarillo forward beers I've had (Sculpin and All Day). Cheers

So, I'm really bad at describing/reviewing beer. That's why I just rate them, but...I'm having AleSmith Speedway Stout and it's pretty amazing. Flavors of coffee, cacao nibs, bread, roasted grains, oak and bourbon (even though this is NOT barrel aged), mild soy sauce and sticky sugary sweetness. Amazing beer and I strongly recommend it! Cheers!
[IMG] P.S. I'd love to get my hands on ALL the variants of this beer.

These will be going on the grill soon.

Burton Baton is one of my favorite beers, maybe my "epiphany beer" of 2013. I've got a 4-pack aging, to see how it holds up. You're exactly right: it's somewhere between a DIPA and a BW (an already fine line), but the virgin oak aging gives it such a tremendous character, even fresh. Just super delicious. I agree that it's not that easy to rate.

    New Local Golden Ale Sunday!

First off the work day was fun, second I had a new brew sitting in the beer fridge. With urgency I flew to my fridge and popped this out!

Now the description of this here brew. She pours a nice Golden body with a thick soapy white head. Looks ok to me. Now for the old sniff test, you know to see if it's good or not. This beer smells huge of sweet corn and pale malts. With hints of floral hops in the background. Not too bad. Now let's taste this thing! First hits with a melange of flavors, ranging from sweet corn, crackers, and hints of some tropical flowers and spruce. Very resinous! The finish is both semi dry and slightly bitter, with more resinous hops in the aftertaste. The feel of the brew is medium-light and crisp, very smooth with par carbonation.

Overall: I usually don't grab Union Brews because they don't can date. But this just came in and I know it has to be at least a week old. Well I'm glad I grabbed this. It's not a hop assault but it's enjoyable. It's very easy to drink, 5 % I would guess so. This brew is neat and clean. I like how the hops finish this brew. Floral and Resinous. Just how I like them. This brew is worthy. I would rate it at a B+.

    Cheers NBSers!

I got a bottle of each Mirror Mirror '14 and Not The Stoic from Wyoming, since it's not distro'd here. And I'm gonna wait to drink them after the Best After date. I drank The Abyss before the Best After date and while it was good, it wasn't great. So, I'm gonna trust Deschutes and will "patiently" wait to drink these bad boys.

Also going to sit on a 4 pack for at least a year. It may call to me in my sleep more than any other beer in the basement. Honestly could see it turning into a fantastic barleywine.
