Looking to feel less alone on a particular subject... does it bother anybody else, when on a tv show, a character at a bar just orders "a beer"? You see it regularly, where they'll say "can I get three beers please?", and the bartender just does it. I know it's probably a trademark thing, but it always takes me out of it.

It's one of those things - if they name a specific beer there are trademark issues - if they make up a fake name it will sound stupid (think: every made up band on tv ever, they all had terrible names) so they settle on the easiest solution - which feels weird for everyone. That being said - I'd be a lot more annoyed if every TV character bellied up to the bar and ordered a Bud Light - which is what would happen...

I was watching a bit of the Walking Dead marathon this weekend, and saw the episode where they were in a big box store, in the liquor section. Zombies were falling through the roof and crashing on to bulkstacked displays of SweetWater and Terrapin. My first thought was "Save the beer!!!" After my heart rate settled, I wondered if those breweries paid for some product placement, or if the makers of the show gave the breweries a little love since the show is shot in Georgia?

Interestingly this very thing was addressed in an article in this month's beer advocate magazine.

ive noticed this too, but not with just beer. same goes for wine. on shows they will ask for a pinot or cab etc tho. not just give me a white or red. maybe it would help a little if instead of asking just for a "beer" the tv patron could ask for an IPA or pilsner, brown ale etc. could avoid legal issues and also put a little more intelligence into the writing.

That is far too advanced for most of America...haha, imagine Joe BMC sitting at home in his recliner and watching a show and the character orders an IPA, poor Joe's head is going to explode trying to figure out what that means. That's why they just keep things simple and say "beer." Most people outside of people like us don't put much thought in to TV and movie beers.

Don't know. I subscribed at $9.99... felt it was too good to pass up.

The article talked about Walking Dead, but it did not say whether the Sweetwater, Terrapin, or Red Brick paid, although I doubt they did. The gist of the article is that craft brews usually end up on TV as a result of bartering goods (e.g., free beer for placement) or because the producers simply like the local beer.

On Orange is the New Black the boyfriend of the main character and his best friend drink Stone IPA exclusively.
They drink it in bars and at home. I was shocked someone was drinking a real beer on T.V. and not a made up
brand. Of course TNT network made a deal and drink Blue Moon exclusively and proudly display the label and
go to Blue moon commercials on every other break. Product placement as good as Blade Runner. Oops showing
my AARP card status! And yes I know Joe the bartender too.

Weeds also had quite a few characters drinking Stone (same creator Jenji Kohan). I think Andy was even wearing a Stone shirt in one of the episodes.

If you watched the Revolution show you couldn't miss the huge Bud Light product placement in one of the episodes. (When the nanos tried to make Aaron Pittman think he was living pre-blackout.)

Sad thing is, there are many ACTUAL bands with names much worse than this.

Hey guys - let's call ourselves Puddle of Mudd haha!

    Yeah!
    Great Idea!
    Let's do it!

I was only kidding, but ok. People will think it's funny I guess.

Yeah that wasn't lost on me when he lovingly drank that bud light like it was liquid gold. I just muttered to myself "drink a real beer four eyes..."

In Grimm the characters drink Rogue almost exclusively. Monroe even ordered a double dead guy by name at a pub. All the bars they go to have Rogue ads on the walls too. (Filmed in Portland)

I really prefer this to the more insidious product placement that has become ubiquitous.
