My fiancee and I are both really into beers, and we are getting married this year.

In honor of that, I'd like to buy/ trade for some 2014 beers to put in the cellar and crack open on our various anniversaries - 1-year, 5-year, 10-year, etc. I would like to pick up about a dozen or so different beers. Any thoughts or suggestions?

World Wide Stout would be a good one. Ages well and could be a solid contender for five years. Or maybe longer.

For the 5 year+ goal, your best bet is probably some good guezes.

What beer styles do you enjoy the most? That might help to focus you cellar building efforts.

My personal preference for a beer with long term aging potential is Gueuze. It is one of the few beer styles that I know of that is considered to age well from anywhere between 5-10-15-20 years depending on the storage conditions, quality of the specific Gueuze, and quality of cork and cage/bottle packaging of said Gueuze. Go with Cantillion and Drie Fontenien.

Old ales are also another option if you like beer on the maltier and high abv side. Two specific examples that come to mind are HotD Adam and the North Coast Old Stock Cellar Reserve (aged in bourbon or brandy barrels depending on the years). Most other HotD beer age really well. Adam is a fairly affordable beer that well cellar nicely or drinks great fresh. The Cellar Reserve Old Stock is really really awesome too. I have drank the 2005 Brandy Old Stock when it had 8 years on the bottle and it was a fantastic drink.

You could get this year's Bourbon County Stout and be good for 5 years possibly 10 years.

I enjoy all beer styles - but I honestly think that, when it comes to aging a beer 20 years, I'd be better off just focusing on what specific beers will age really well. Most styles don't stand a chance.

Then I would go with a gueuzes. 3F Oude Gueuze will be easy to get. You should just order a case from belgian in a box. You can buy it by the case and them age them at your leasure without having to go through all the hassel of trading for the sours. It will be expensive, but so is trading for beer...

I wouldnt age BCBS for any more than 5 years at the most. I personally think that after 3 years it falls off for my personal taste in reguards to BCBS. But yes BCBS is an excellant choice for a barrel aged stout to cellar just not for a long time.

Great suggestion. I'd actually like about 12 different beers though. Obviously, some of them only have to last 5 to 10 years, so I can do stouts, barleywines, and old ales for those

Sounds like you got a plan! Just remember with belgium in a box and similiar sites that shipping will be very expensive and take a long time to arrive because it goes through customs because it is international shipping.

Not really. It starts to fall off a cliff at around 4-5 years. 6+ years is pushing it, to say the least. 3 years is kind of a sweet spot.

Definitely BCBS. I had a 2007 last year on Black Friday and it was amazing. Also at the 4 Elf Party I had a 1998 Arcadia Imperial Stout and we were all blown away by it.

A second vote for Bells Expedition stout. I have had it 4 years old it's like a dream come true. I am not an expert on this beer but I know it will last longer probably a lot longer.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned The Bruery Sucre set this year. 8-9 bottles I think if you can land the Hoarders only bottles as well. An old ale that I think should age very well for a very long time. Plus, as a set they have some kind of relationship to one another, drink each variant aged in a different barrel on your anniversary every year or every other year and compare.

Dogfish Head 120 Minute should age well for around 10 years.

Also, I know The Bruery's Winter Series is meant to be aged until the 12th one comes out.

The 6th of the series (which is delicious) can still be found. Assuming the 7th will be out this winter so you may want to grab that one as a 5 year option.
