Happy NBS, BA! Not so happy Sunday for me as it is end of vacation. Trying a beer we grabbed at a bottle shop we stopped in on vacation. Checking dates more myself, trying to get my girlfriend to do so as well. We missed on this one, dated March of this year. Audacity of Hops with age becomes more "scarcity of hops", although I think if like to try a fresh one, given the chance - seems like had some potential.

Happy NBS everyone! It's been a nice but hot day here in Central Ohio today (mid 80's is hot to me), so I'm staying inside the rest of the day and drinking some brews. My first new brew of the day was Rogue's Voodoo Doughnut Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/132/107055/?ba=bluejacket74

I thought it was a good enough brew, not sure I could drink it very often though!

I'll have another new beer review on here in a bit, I'm drinking the brew now. Cheers everyone!

Thanks. I was almost scared to even compare them because I was expecting somebody to go off on me.

"WHAAAT? COMPARING AN ALE TO A LAGER!?"

I wouldn't guess Dissenter was specifically an IPL in a blind tasting though, and I doubt anybody would.

I've not been able to enjoy a sudsy sunday afternoon in some time as I'm usually either working or abstaining in the interest of playing basketball later in the evening, but today I had neither obligation! Yayy!! I decided to double dip 10 Barrel (if I wanted to reach, I could connect '2' beers with '10' the binary two, but... well that would just be silly to point out such pointless empty numerological crypto-crap. This is the brain I am cursed with: it points out these stretched jokes, then forces me to realize just how dumb they are. Bonus points for foisting the whole process on those around me!) with two of the three offerings available here on my beautiful island (the neglected third twin being the highest rated of the three, I would later realize...). And beautiful it is! Summer is still in full swing here as the temperature feels like it must be in the 80s at least (which passes for scorching around here).
(see the nice clean window? No you don't because it's so nice and clean!!)

I started with S1nist0r, a schwarzbier that I mistakenly assumed would be a Cascadian Dark Ale when I picked it up. Kind of a happy surprise when I realized my error: it's an interesting schwarz (I found the ring in a box of cracker jacks!), and the ultimate verdict renders it smoothe, creamy, and enjoyable if not entirely traditional.
(my weak attempt to capture some of hte glory of the pour as so masterfully demonstrated by luminaries such as our own @Greywulfken)

Apocalypse was another pleasant surprise. I was expecting a middling IPA that I could drink and enjoy and forget, but instead it smacked me across the face with juicy sweet apricot and nectarine fruit/citrus sweetness on the nose before easing into a bitter version on the tongue before leaving me sitting dazed as the flavour covertly slipped from the playful peachiness of its beginning into a firmly bitter finish reminding me that its style designation may not list the word 'west' but leaving no doubt as to where its roots lie.

The blueberries in the background there came from the garden (after I'd already grabbed some from teh store... idiot) and will form the juicy goodness of a pie for this evening's bbq festivities celebrating our friends who are visiting from The ATX.

Now, if you'll excuse me, the thermometer confirms my previous estimations that it is 27 C, which translates to exactly 80.6 F, and there is a pond calling my name. I must go and jump in, thus terrifying my puppy and forcing me to spend the next hour sitting placidly in the shallow end holding her and cooing into her ear that it's alright and telling her what a good girl she is...

    New Imperial Stout Sunday

Just finished my 2nd and last new beer of the day, To Øl's Liquid Confidential: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24299/97244/?ba=bluejacket74

I thought it was a good imperial stout, but I was hoping for more of a kick from the chili peppers. Still, I thought it was a tasty brew and liked it. It was really easy to drink for being 12.3% ABV, it didn't take long to finish it. Happy NBS everyone, and I'll be checking out everyone else's new beers too!

First time with this beer and my first Lost Abbey beer. I love a good Saison and I really enjoyed this beer. A bit from my review (I gave it a 4.23): Love the up-front character of the big Belgian yeast as well as the fruit tastes: peach, apple, a little pear and a bit of sweet orange. Also a nice farmyard funk underneath and a very nice lingering bitter that, I'm assuming, comes from the American hops. Very crisp and tasty. A hint of warming alcohol as well. Overall, I think this is a wonderful Saison that I would be happy to drink again.

Second New Beer for this Sunday - Uinta Brewing's Detour, a double IPA. I love the label - an the old Airstream trailer, called "Hoppy Camper", with 1993 on the license plate (the year the brewery started) being pulled by what looks like a '74 Toyota Land Cruiser Wagon (it just so happens that this beer is rated at 74 IBU), detouring away from the city into what I would assume is the Uinta Mountains. Those mountains are pretty impressive. I toured around them several years ago, the first time I had any Uinta beer. Dinosaur National Monument is definitely worth a visit! But I digress...

This beer pours a nice, thick head in my Dogfish IPA glass, showing a deep amber color, with nice lacing as you drink. The aroma is faintly floral hoppiness, and the first sip delivers a range of citrus and piney flavors, followed by a sweet bitterness that diminishes quickly. A little thin but pleasing. Actually, deeelicious! Although it isn't the best DIPA I've had, I would buy it again, even though it's a bit pricey, at least where I purchased it.

Hello all my NBS friends! My family and I have returned home from the great city of Chicago. We had a great time and celebrated my daughter's 5th birthday. I was able to grab a few new beers quickly on our way home.

Pipeworks Simcoe is a very bright IIPA. Loads of fresh hops give it a very bitter pine and grapefruit bite, but it has a terrific maltiness to give it some balance. Waves of caramel, honey, and ripe pineapple stop the onslaught briefly, but the hops exit with a big punch of juniper and pine bitterness.

Greetings all from the great Northwest.

Today it is Frankenlou's IPA from Seven Brides Brewing. I have occasionally wondered what the name of the brewery means? It must be a good story.

Frankenlou's is fairly dark and frightfully sweet for an IPA. Not exactly what I was looking for on this warm August afternoon.

Sunny and warm here in the upper left of the USA map, with temps in the low 90's. Winding down a great four day weekend. Wife's birthday celebration Thursday, golf Friday, and then two glorious days when I don't even leave the ranch, except for a little morning jog. Three more of these summer weekends left, then I'll start thinking about Octoberfests.

    Happy Trails!

Spent the afternoon taking the wife to see Guardians of the Galaxy again, and now time for a new beer, this week's selection is Not the Stoic from Deschutes. I picked this one up in Vegas earlier this summer, and haven't had a quad in a while so this seemed like a good time for one.

Really nice brew. All of the things you would expect in an American quad. Nothing crazy outstanding, but very solid and enjoyable. Incredibly easy drinking for 12% ABV.

Had to cross post this, as it's been a while since I got a "tick" on a Sunday.

This is fantastic. I was worried, I checked the scores when I bought it, and it was dragging along at 82... But being the ticker that I am, and having the love for Founders that I do, I had to buy mine, especially since it was held with my name on it. And now it's up at 92 and rising! I agree!

Freaking amazing. IOU a full review....

Kinda bummed, from the Further Facebook page, and the RatDog webpage... Bob Weir has "hung it up" indefinitely. Cancelled all fall tours, music festivals, and the week in Jamaica.

Wishing him good health, and a speedy recovery if it something other than being 66 years old...

    I will survive!

    Cheers!

Good evening NBS! Hope everyone is kicking back and enjoying the end of the weekend. I kegged my hop bursted Centennial/Amarillo Brown ale today. MI Homebrew fest is next weekend, and the club is going to have 10 taps, and I will have one of them. I just set it in the fridge @ 35 psi today so I will pull some tomorrow to try when it's carbonated. 6 ounces of hops in the last 15 minutes was what I did. Gravity sample nose was HUGE on grapefruit/tangerine/citrus peels; while the taste was much more balanced with chocolate/biscuits/toast/caramel and hop flavors. Pleasant bitterness as well. We will see how it tastes tomorrow. I am brewing a White IPA next weekend with Mosaic and Belma hops. A direct rebrew of my 2012 recipe with different hops. One of my best batches ever so it should rock :grinning:

Anyways, heres the new ones today:

This was an excellent Belgian Pale ale. Taste of big lemon, pear, apple, light banana, clove, black pepper, cracker, bread, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Nice crisp and spicy ester finish. Well balanced pale malt, yeast, and earthy hop flavors. Super refreshing and all around great beer. I might have to buy another 4 pack. 90/100
    [IMG]

This was a nice and pleasant blonde. Taste of grapefruit, lemon zest, lime, orange peel, toast, biscuit, light caramel, herbal, grass, light pepper, and herbal/grassy earthiness. Well balanced hop, spice, and bready malt flavors. Very crisp and a bit dry on the finish. Flavors have good robustness and never feel watery. A nice summer drinker. 84/100
    [IMG]

Very nice Doppelbock. Taste of caramel, toast, brown bread, raisin, plum, fig, brown sugar, light roast, herbal, grass, light pepper, and yeast earthiness. Great complexity and balance of flavors. Slight earthy bitterness on the finish. A crisp and smooth finish that is a bit creamy as well. Nose was too fruity/estery, but taste was a good experence. Enjoyed this. 86/100
    [IMG]

Very nice Imperial stout. Has a bit of an English feel to it in malt flavors. Taste of dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, toast, molasses, dark bread, light char/smoke with a touch of dark fruits and a fair amount of herbal/piney hops. Well balance hop and roasted malt bitterness/sweetness. Very smooth and moderately creamy feel. 88/100

    Greetings, fellow NBSers,

Smoky and hazy this 91 degree evening in Spokompton. I was just about to open a "grunt" filled with 32 ounces of 10 Barrel's Apocalypse IPA when I was called into work - apparently people who were supposed to show up decided not to!
Anyway, after getting home I'm finally able to pop this bad boy open:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16873/53808/?ba=woemad

Not truly earth shattering, but still a fine, citrusy PNW IPA to come home to.

    Cheers!
