Bummer! I "snuck" out of work early to brew. Got home, had my brew area all set up, had the water heating, and pulled out the mash tun to get that pre-heated and smelled an awful stench. I looked in, and somehow a mouse got in and couldn't get out. It actually looked like there was a 2nd one in there (some quick research confirmed that mice can be cannibalistic). Lots of fur, poop, some dead ******s (I think they were)...

I'd upload a picture just for ha-has, but can't figure out how. Plus, maybe it's best to spare you the visually gory details.

I'm not washing that. Time for a new tun, manifold, and drain tube.

Reminds me of a thread on here awhile back...

But I would be getting a new MLT built on that one too.

Obviously I wouldn't use that one today...
Maybe over time and a lot of washing and bleach / PBW / Oxyclean I would think about using it.
But thank you for not posting pictures.

A hard bleach, and hot PBW.. probably fine. It's hot side anyways.

That said.. I don't think I would ever be able to get the idea that there was a putrefied mouse in my mash tun, so yeah.. a new one would be happening.

I'm not seeing any pictures, but how you manage to mash into a kettle with a dead rodent in it is beside me.....

Isn't there a story about how the origional guinness brewery derived lots of it's signiture flavor from dead rats in the mash?

I would cut the rotted mouse carcass by half and double both the late hops and dry hops. Be careful not to use too much crystal.

I bet Dogfish Head could figure out a way to brew that.

Didn't Bob and Doug McKenzie use that mouse ploy to get free beer?

I don't think it's that big of a deal. Bugs get into my mash tun all the time. I'd definitely hit it with some 1:10 bleach before brewing again and run some through the spigot. Rinse well and brew on!

This thread will also be a great resource to share for the enviable thread titled, "Rookie needs recommendations for first batch using rotting mice carcass extract, where do I start?"
