What's the weirdest thing y'all have used to build a fermentation chamber? I'm gonna use the blood refrigerator from a blood bank.

Your's is so weird that I can't top that. (And I doubt that anyone in this forum will be able to either.)

My house was built in 1960 and has what's labeled* as a bomb shelter. I ferment beers in it sometimes.

*It's not what I think would qualify as a bomb shelter, more like a cellar. It's not what you think of that's shown in the movies with an air-tight door with a huge combo vault-style lock (at least, that's what I think of). It's a small room in the basement that's about 10'x12' with 6'6" ceilings with a creepy hallway leading back to it. The thing is completely enclosed in cinderblocks and concrete (even the ceiling has concrete over the wood paneling). It's a neat feature that we basically use for storage and all my beer stuff. Also, I'm one of the few BA's on this site who can legitimately say they have a "cellar" for the beer I age.

It was just labeled as a bomb shelter by the seller, but whatever, it wouldn't withstand a nuclear blast or anything. For what it's worth, it is where we keep non-perishable food, toilet paper, lots of beer, and a couple buckets...so if the apocalypse comes, I feel like I have a good head-start.

P.S. Blood bank would weird me out too much, but I know that's just me being squeamish.

I use the gas tank of a old Vietnam war era fighter jet parked in my yard to ferment my beer - especially when incorporating Vietnamese coffee beans

No, not really, but just trying to top the OP's post

Bad thing is that it has this printer built in that print out temperature fluctuations over a 24 hour period but it's broken. Good thing, it still cools and holds 2 carboys.

While this is a fermentation tank and not a fermentation chamber, I recall discussion of brewers fermenting beer in an actual hollowed out pumpkin. I've never done it myself because frankly it's a horrible idea.

Of course your first fermented beer in this must be some kind of Blood Orange Wit,

Is this the part where someone brings up the turkey pan coolship? For quite a while I kept barrels and carboys in a cabinet in my bedroom I somehow tricked my wife into allowing, as well as in a towel closet in the bathroom. Ive upgraded to a fridge in the garage at the new house...

Seriously! Blood Bank gets all the great looking Styrofoam coolers and you can stockpile on dry ice too.

I got it from a hospital my dad works for. They had to replace it because of the printer was locking up, but it cools great. SCORE!

I grew up u der the shadow of norad during the cold war. There are so many older homes in colorado Springs with fermentation chambers... I mean bomb shelters its not even funny. Maybe that explains the number of breweries springing up round here.

Yeah, that sounds pretty awesome. The Mississippi Delta used to be a swamp so basements are few and far between.
