    Weyerbacher Insanity

I haven't been a huge fan of Weyerbacher. Double Simcoe was very nice, Old Heathen was OK, and Heresy was infected. This, however, is very good; actually, probably the best I've had from them.

Very hot and boozy; bourbon on the nose, and heat in the mouth. That said, it's got tons of grains (expected) and fruit (unexpected). Caramel and toffee for days, with grapes and cherries adding some sweetness along with the yeast.

    4.01 / -3.8%

On another string of -rDevs (7 in a row), but 5 of those beers I've rated at 4 or higher! So, no shame to the brewer; these are some outstanding beers, no doubt. If you haven't had Insanity, I recommend you check it out. I absolutely do not put it anywhere near FW Abacus or GI BCBBW, but it's quite good, nonetheless.

Good afternoon fellow NBS brethren! I hope this message finds you enjoying something delicious in your snifter, nonic, or perfect pint glass today. Weather in Central OH is sunny and fall-like! Woot! A beautiful day in the mid-70's. Almost too cool to enjoy this fine offering from Rahr & Sons Brewing Co. Not sure why this beer hasn't gone more love other than it's a fizzy yellow lager on BA...but hey...fizzy yellow lagers CAN be good. They are just the exception. Everything I've had from Rahr has been awesome and this is no different. Happy NBS!!

Aroma: Slightly sweet crackery Pilsner malt base up front. Light earthy hop bitterness. Relatively clean lager character.

Appearance: Nearly clear golden pour with a low white head that retains well. Appears still in the glass.

Flavor: More crackery Pilsner goodness with a firm earthy hop bitterness that balances this beer well. Balance is nearly even. Finish is clean and dry. Aftertaste is slightly lingering with pleasant cracker-like malt notes.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with medium-high carbonation. No alcohol heat or astringency.

Overall impression: A refreshing sessionable lager. This beer deserves more love. Well crafted and enjoyable. Rahr is such a good brewery that delivers every time I have something from them.

Greetings, fellow NBSers, from the wilds of eastern Washington,

Low 80s and partly cloudy. After some cooler days and some practically downright cold nights in the middle of last week, the weather is back to where it generally is at the end of summer around here. Thursday was an excellent NFL night for me. The 'hawks were outstanding on both sides of the ball. Yesterday, my two favorite college football teams squared off against one another in a manner upsetting for both teams. EWU came close to beating UW but came up short of what would have been a major upset, while UW continued the trend of underwhelming victory it started in last week's opener. Could be worse, I could be a Cougar fan.:grimacing:

Speaking of underwhelming, I decided to go with a canned "Belgian Stout Brewed with Chocolate and Spices."
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/16057/90248/?ba=woemad
Since there was no canning date and the label speaks of "future" special releases in 2013, I'm gonna chalk it up to age, but although the flavors were muted, what was there didn't meld together very well, so maybe it just wasn't that great to begin with.

I may get dinged because I don't feel like getting all wordy and shit about this (38 hard fought miles up Mt Tam and the 9er game is on) but my first stab at a Dust Bowl beer:
I had high hopes on this one. Nose was solid. Hue looked good but the flavor wasn't at all what I was hoping for. And it's not that it's not fresh, it's bottled late July. Just not the hop profile I was looking for. No lacing and the after-taste leaves plenty to be desired.
It's not bad per-se, but I wouldn't buy it again as there are plenty of better DIPA's out there.

    Hey all,
like the BA a couple posts before me I, too, am in Ohio. Up in the NW corner, it's not so cool. It's somewhere in the mid 80s and I wouldn't mind a 10 degree drop. Still, it's a lovely day, and I've got a can of Stillwater Brontide. Stillwater may have some of the most surreal and visually stimulating artwork, and somehow that's increased by the can as opposed to a bottle label. I think it's a bit underrated, and I also think there are some who don't realize what I difference can exist between something labeled a "Belgian dark" and a "Belgian Strong dark." The distinction can be huge. This one is light in many ways, clocking in at 5% ABV. It's light-bodied, reminding me of a Schwarzbier though it's an ale rather than a lager. It's crisp and runs fairly dry. Overall it's not lacking flavor and it's a very easy black ale with some character.

Great porter, San Diego style. Roasty caramel malt, bitter prune juice, and right on style. Of course don't forget the nice hoppy finish. I love Ballast Point, they do no wrong...

Made it up to Tired Hands and was able to get two bottle of Parageusia2 (http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/28383/123065/?ba=larryi86) so I am drinking one now and saving the other to split with my best friend later this month.

500 ml bottle poured into my Paragesia glass

A- A hazy golden orange with a 2 finger white white head. 4.5

S- Sour, some wine, oak, hints of earth spice, light fruits/pears, grainy malt backbone, nice balance. 4.4

T- Sour fruits, getting grapefruits, hints of cherries, apples, hint of wine, some oak, slightly funky, a good and unique mix of sour flavors. 4.6

M- Smooth, crisp, light to medium body. 4.4

O- Another great beer from Tired Hands. Not as good as Parageusia1, sour flavors are a little more unique, just doesn't have the crazy balance of the first, but still worth seeking . 4.5
    Final score 4.52

Greetings fellow NBSers! A very fine, warm and sunny late summer day here in the Fourth Corner of this nation, and I hope it continues for a fair while yet. Earlier this week was Camp Boundary for the brewery I help out at. A 5 day campout in the Cascade mountains, spread out so everyone gets a chance to go out. The brewery provides beer and food, and everyone pitches in. This was my first trip to Camp, and of course we got 3/4 of an inch of rain the day I went. Oh well. I stood around the campfire drinking beer, stood next to the North Fork of the Nooksack river drinking beer, and ate tacos (Yeah, Taco night! There was left over T-bone steaks from steak night. Yup, T-Bone Tacos!!!!!!) in the rain. Had a great time. The next night I was pressed into emergency service. Our brewery works with a local whale-watch company to do brewers cruises on Wednesday nights through the summer, and I went to set up the taps. Then I spent 2-1/2 hours cruising around the Salish Sea drinking beer. Yup, mountains one day, the ocean the next day. I love the PNW.

My NBS entry today is my first under the new review format (not sure I like it), a new beer from a local brewery, and a first for a style (Koyt) that is new to me, although, apparently, it's an old Dutch style. There's not a BA entry for the style, but I was told that BJCP just added it, so maybe BA will as well: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/34416/136492/

After helping at the local JazzFest yesterday, here's a pretty song to go with my pretty week:

    Baltic Porter comparison:
Gonzo Imperial Porter - Flying Dog Brewery (4.1) over a very approachable Dominion Baltic Porter - Old Dominion Brewing Company (3.9)

Psst... just tasted Carton's 3rd RIS... 10% ABV and a winner. coming soon.

Much to love about this style in the cool waning evenings of August. Gonzo is 1st rate.

Gonzo Imperial Porter - Flying Dog Brewery
    4.1/5 rDev +1.7%

I like this brewer and their Oyster Stout is a great session stout.

Perfect last beer of the evening, and great with chocolate, cheesecake, dessert. I reached for a chocolate dunker as soon as I tasted, but not great for waistline!

A: Good looking, Black, tan head, quick to settle, abundant lace. 4
S: Big aroma of coffee, caramel, chocolate - and perhaps brandy. Definite sweetness outweighing a slight hoppy finish.
T: Dessert like with smoked flavors, mostly full flavored, sweet profile and a nice dry, long smokey finish. Definitely opens up as it warms, and definitely the last beer of the night.
M: Rich and creamy, very warming, long tickle.

D - This one started mid-pack but over a long session with it, I grew to find it outstanding.

Dominion Baltic Porter - Old Dominion Brewing Company
    3.9/5 rDev +3.7%

12 ounce bottle - Bottling Date: 10/20/12, just now drinking on 6/28/13. Purchased at WHOLE Foods in Craft assortment pack.

Appearance: Pours a dark brown body with medium, foamy, beige head that fades fast and laces very little. (but it's 8 months old). Into a leffe chalice.

Smell: Minimal, want more aroma because what's there is very good. Will let it warm.
Smoky roasty malts, some licorice, coffee, dark fruits, and bit of chocolate... Want more power.

Taste: Rich, abundant, dark maltiness with dual notes of bitter roast balanced by tastes of licorice, espresso, and chocolate background sweetness. It's roasted bitter over background of sweet.
Spicy, nice tingle of bitterness. and as it warms, it rounds out with sweetness, roastiness, and dark fruitiness.

Mouthfeel: Medium-body & carbonation. A smooth mouthfeel. Nice finish. First rate.

Overall: Love the style. These guys honor it. Would definitely drink again.

Greetings to you, militias of Marzeners, protectorates of Pilsners. And to you, amadans of American pale ale, and your brethren; infantrymen of India Pale Ales. It's time for another installment of my pompous, prosaic, and largely alliterative NBS reviews. This week on the docket? Black Isle Brewery's Export Scotch Ale.

Sight- A beatific ruby wrapped in a dark, dark brown. Head is off-white, and after pouring, settles down to a thin cap. Lacing reminds me of a still-capture of the spray of water after someone were to drop a large rock into a pond.
Smell- a touch of smoke, malt, caramel, and perhaps even raisins.
Sip- Wow. A medley of malt, sugar, raisin, a hint of smoke. Hops give it a nice subtle bitter tinge. Sort of reminds me of a Belgian strong dark... but I digress.
Mouthfeel- Truly great bubble, with a light coating to the tongue. Leaves a slightly sweet aftertaste, causing me to take another sip, and another.

I completely understand the "fruit cake" comment of someone who reviewed this. It's got a candied taste to it, much more prevalent as it warms up. I'd like it a bit more chilled, so I will have to drink it faster next time around.

Overall, really enjoyable 22 oz. offering from a completely organic Scottish brewery. American amadans beware, this brew rivals Founders Scottish offering- the one with a man with hygiene problems and through no fault of his own, born out of wedlock.

I could've written 10,000 words on the smell of this beer ... it's at least 10 different things and I love all of them. It ends up smelling like a vanilla shake with tart rasberries or lemon-cherry in it -- but it's always super sweet. The taste is much, much more bitter but it's fantastic. This and Prairie Hop are my favorite Prairie Artisan Ales so far, but I've yet to have a bad one.

Anybody good with potted plants? Me and Midnight the Cat have been trying to get this bougainvillea in its big pot correctly and having a so-so time -- though I think I've got it now.

Do what I (and many others) did: make an excel spreadsheet which weights your scores under the old system. It's exceptionally easy, and allows you to keep rating the way you did before (until the Bros reinstate the old system as an optional review, which Todd has said is forthcoming). Definitely helps for NBS!
