Fair enough, I've been trusting that the OP was accurate. Who knows at this point.

So next year at DLD, instead of stealing Dark Lord (child's play), I'll be raiding the tasting tables/dumpsters. Reapplied remelted wax will be the same color as the original, right?

Feel free to get off your high horse at at time...

I may not have a bottle of the JCN but I do trade occasionally and have traded for Cantillon a couple times at least. So while my "dog isn't in this fight" per se, it is still in my interest to find out what happens here, how it happened, how to detect it, and know how easily the fake beer can be discovered upon tasting (if possible).

I wholeheartedly agree that the two beers are likely quite noticeably different - when tasted side by side. I am positive my palate could detect the differences. But since I do not drink Classic Gueuze for breakfast, should I suddenly taste a bottle of JCN I would be hard pressed to say definitively if it was the real deal or a fake.

Case in point - I have had Founders Breakfast Stout countless times. It used to be my all-time favorite beer. I went to a bar a couple years ago that was serving CBS with breakfast. It was the first time for me trying CBS. After drinking through 2 full glasses of "CBS" I was confused at all the praise - because to me it tasted very similar to FBS. However, I was indeed "making up" unique differences because my brain was telling me the beers had to be different. I assumed the differences were just extremely subtle. I almost said something but again, because I did not know definitively what CBS ought to taste like I had to assume that I was drinking CBS.

Only after finishing the second glass was the bar told that they were in reality serving everyone FBS. They later did serve CBS, which I could then discover was markedly different.

The same principle applies here. Classic Gueuze is one of my favorite beers, and I have likely had it more times than any other gueuze. But sit me down with a bottle of "JCN" for the first time and I would have no idea (for certain) if I was drinking the real deal. Even after looking at reviews I couldn't say for sure because the reviews/descriptors for gueuze are some of the most varied in the reviewing world. Where I might pick up on dusty brett someone else is describing tongue-curling lactic acid. And especially because Classic Gueuze is such an amazing beer in its own right, it's not as if I'd take a sip and say, "This is shit, definitely not real Cantillon/definitely not anything close to the reviews."

But again, what do I know, I apparently ought not be sampling something as restricted as JCN. I'll stop junking up your thread now...

So is this thread going to boost the trade value of known-genuine Cantillon/3F bottles? That's exactly what we need....

I agree with Stupac here. I have been looking for 7oz brown nip bottles for about 9 months (like the ones Rouge uses). They are available, if I want to buy 10,000 of them. The 375ml RR bottles are supposed to be coming to to the Homebrew stores, but I have yet to see any of those either. Special bottles are a PITA to trac down.

My Google-Fu might be strong, but this took less than 60 seconds:
    http://www.austinhomebrew.com/product_info.php?cPath=178_356_62&products_id=13253

    $35 for 12.

The site was the 3rd link under "750ml homebrew bottles", which was the first thing I searched for.

At this point I'm extremely tempted to make a fake CBS, just to prove how easily it can be done. Just such a sad waste of 2 bottles of KBS if I overdose the maple... Bottles, labels, maple, mixing - all easy. Only moderately tricky part is acquiring enough KBS, but that's not impossible. Also, I'm sure this could almost as easily be done with FBS and a bit of bourbon too.

Man, am I going to actually have to drink one of your fake bottles of CBS? It'll probably taste better than the tears of being proved wrong.

The better experiment would be this:

Work out a trade for a CBS, whatever is fair for both parties.... plus enough extras to cover a couple of KBS.... then have cbeer send you both a CBS, and his "Fake" CBS, and write something on each bottle so only he knows which is the genuine one.

Then, upon receiving them, you drink one now, and one a week later (side-by-side may be too easy) And then you have to tell him what one was the genuine, and which was the fake.

Fool the eye, and the palate.....

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and taste is subjective, but I think CBS is fantastic..... wish I had a bottle.

Why don't we all start fake accounts, fill empty whale bottles we have lying around the house with obviously wrong beers, sell them for outrageous prices, and essentially kill the resale market when everyone starts complaining to eBay?

That'd put a stop to their bullshit "you are trading for the container, not its contents" loophole.

I don't actually care if it can be distinguished from real CBS. Doing it based on my memory of CBS (which I've had like four times now anyway) is probably better.

Of course, this all provided he actually wants to go through with it.

CBS was good, I agree, but just no better thank KBS, which is soooo much easier to land. I'd honestly rather have KBS any day of the week.

Nah, just ice a six pack of Founders porter, dose it with bourbon and maple syrup, and sprinkle a packet of Swiss Miss on top. Make sure you make a couple other bottles with different amounts of ingredients to replicate their bottle variation. You'd be legit.

There are so many easier ways to make money through fraud. I can't believe someone would go through this kind of trouble. It would be like someone producing counterfeit $5 bills. It would take several people in the retail chain to agree to do this to make it work but certainly doable.

Alright - for science! I'm going to start with a 12oz bottle of KBS and blend a little maple in until I can approximate the taste from memory. I may also play with FBS, if I have any bottles left.
