Good morning and cheers to all of you who have a rousing penchant for the robust porter and who awaken to the wonderment of winter beers. Today is the day and this is the place for you to TRY a new beer and TELL us about it. What sets this thread apart from WBAYDN is how we stay and linger a bit, shoot the breeze and tell a little about our week or our day. We display and link to our reviews and not just our pics. Now like the other thread we do like our music and so please feel free to regale us with any world wide web accompaniment with which you choose to adorn your beer!

This week has been awfully busy and I am looking forward to sharing some great beer with all of you. The weather has turned to fall and for me that always meant moving the party indoors. Instead of sitting on front or back porches playing cards and drinking lemonade, we would move en masse into the kitchen. That's where all the action is anyway. The baking would commence and no one ever seemed to leave the kitchen until spring. In fact some of my fondest memories are hearing the ragtime piano music wafting into the kitchen from the parlor. It was usually the keystone cops or some such kinescope antics coming from the television set. We always had it on and yet no one was ever watching it. ( except me on sundays when I would watch abbot and costello) It was on way too loud to be heard all the way into the kitchen so you could not sit there and watch it anyway. I am still in this habit. today. My son remarks frequently on how I have the tv on but I am not watching. it. "Yeeah!" I say like joan blondell. "Ahm listening, Ahm lis-ten-ing." I loved the piano music. When I started lessons that was my goal. To play scott joplin. I hope to evoke today the spirit of the old time honky tonk. A place where you could belly up to the bar, get up a game of poker, have a brawl or a shoot out, and even swing your best gal around the dance floor. Cheers everyone!

This next one is my all time favorite form scoot joplin. A toe tapper an easy whislter and just a lovely tune. Did you know he also wrote waltzes.? I love a waltz.

Cheers Maria and to the rest of the NBS crew! I haven't opened my new brew for today yet but it's a bit of a puzzling beer. Added to BA in 2002 but it only has a tad over 200 ratings. Perhaps the +$18 for a bottle caused this? Pic and review will follow later this morning.

The most notable thing about this beer is how tangy it is. Anderson Valley brew this with pumpkin and spices and it's aged in Wild Turkey Bourbon barrels. I get a massive amount of buttery malts and tart apples. The spices are present for sure, making this beer a nice Autumn sipper. Unfortunately I'm missing the pumpkin vibe in this beer, as the tart Granny Smith notes overpower any pumpkin. Regardless, I like it, I just didn't come away feeling like I drank a pumpkin ale. The mouthfeel is super smooth and the 8.5% ABV is undetectable.

Wow Maria! You're a hard act to follow. Abbbbbottttt! Yeah,I remember those types of fall days. For NBS today I've got a (semi) local PA beer from Amish country - Lancaster's Boss Hog. My thanks to Wegman's for cellaring this at room temperature under fluorescent lights so I can enjoy the full hop goodness. Actually, this isn't bad even now, just not the DIPA I was hoping for:

Same to you Maria! A bit cooler in Casper after some very nice and mostly windless days. I'll probably go to the Fire Rock to have some Prime Rib after noon, my time, and an awesome baked potato. The beer selection there isn't the greatest but I won't have to settle for a (fill in the blank) .....light.

It's time to start the music, it's time to light the lights!
    First off:
    Prima Pils from Victory Brewing

    Serving Type: Bottle

Appearance: Pale golden yellow; transparent; fluffy white head that falls quickly to cap and a thin collar.

    Smell: Sweet and malty

Taste: Grassy and citrusy well balanced around a sweet malt finish.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, dry and well attenuated

Overall: This one is well executed and easy to drink

Notes: Crackery malts, grass and grapefruit definitely noticeable in this one.

Now let's crank up the heat a bit.

It’s not that I wasn't expecting the heat but there is a disconnect on the smell and taste of this that is disconcerting.
The nose is almost all sweet and citrus but then the taste is pure capsaicin.

Good Sunday all, We were at a place in WMASS last night and had my first Evil Twin offering.
This Morning went to the basement and retrieved this delightful monster of a stout.
Now for some of that fall activity known as RAKING!!

    Cheers all

Evil Twin Aún Más Café Jesús
    Evil Twin Brewing
American Double / Imperial Stout / 12.00% ABV

    3.95/5 rDev: -8.8% | rAvg: 4.33
    look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Recently purchased bottle poured into a goblet.

A - Pitch black, "No light shall pass" it screams. Lightly carbonated, capping off in a fine
mocha colored head. Gentle lacing rings the goblet all through the experience.

S - Dark roast, bakers chocolate, tobacco, aged plums all leap out the goblet. The bouquet
is rich, and compelling. Interestingly as it warms a fine line of alcohol begins to trace its way through the
    nose.

T - Out of the gate its bakers chocolate in front, followed closely by coffee on the right, and here comes
currant, making a move is tobacco and closing in is figs and booze, this is going to be close!

F - Thick bodied, slick with an oily component. The finish is relatively quick and dry.
Leaves the sides of your tongue with a slight lust for more.

O - The beer delivers, a deep rich experience, thick bodied, slightly bitter, and complex throughout.
    quite a treat

    Greetings All,

Here in Greensboro it is in the fifties and drizzling very Scottish-like. I love these days. I can basically let the hounds loose and not worry about hassling people and dogs. No one is out! We took a long walk through this huge hardwood forest and settled in for a nice breakfast, and a beer. This Ballast Point Fathom IPL is really interesting. The nose is gorgeous, with big malt and honey tones. A very rich and malty base mingle perfectly with the hop additions to provide a nicely balanced hybrid brew. I love this beer! Ballast Point is great across the board. Highly recommended.

Here are a couple of guys that eventually visited New Orleans! Cheers all!

    Good morning/early afternoon, NBSers!

I got off to a late start today. It turns out that a BCBS nightcap, while delicious, is not always wise (especially on top of everything else I drank). Nothing that a morning cocktail of acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and a pot of coffee couldn't fix, though. :stuck_out_tongue:

Today's (first?) new beer is a style I've never had: Steadfast's 2nd Anniversary Biere de Garde. Even though I've had this bottle for a couple weeks, I got to add it to the BA database (and thus be the first review, as well).

Steadfast is a gluten-free brewery. That adds another twist to this beer that I may or may not like (on top of the style itself). They also list the nutritional information - including calories - on the bottle, which I think is a plus.

The beer (Biere) looks pretty good, and smells very nice; deep and complex, slightly tart, and strongly sweet. The flavor is all over the place: a bit tart up front as of overripe fruit; flowery, sweet, and minty throughout; blackstrap molasses and liquorice on the back-end.

I don't quite know what to think about this beer. I've never had the style, so I can't possibly say whether or not it is a good representation, nor if the gluten-free aspect significantly impacts the flavor. I can only judge whether or not I'd buy it again....and I'd have to say no. It isn't bad by any means, and it's drinkable; it's just not quite for me, and the mint is slightly off-putting.

    3.69 / 0.00% (duh)

I'll have to see how it changes as it warms. Maybe it'll grow on me.

    Cheers!

@Roguer I have to admit that I often pass up the gluten free beer offerings because I think of them the same way I think of sugar free gum or sugar free hard candies. Something less than what it should be. (I know I'm going , I'm going . )That being said I loved your review and I think that the flavors do seem a bit odd. I mean molasses and liquorice? Your overall impression should be "A fairly strong, malt-accentuated, lagered artisanal farmhouse beer."

Super Sunday to all of you, I hope you are having a fantastic weekend! Let me tell you about yesterday. I was able to visit a favorite brewery of mine that is about a 2 hour drive straight north of me. A beautiful drive with blue skys and colorful autumn trees.

Central Waters was releasing a couple of outstanding brews and had a ton of other beer on tap. It was a really nice small beer fest that I hope to go to each year. Black Gold was a limit of one bottle, so I won't be able to tell you about it since I will end up sharing it on another day with some great BAs.

I do get to tell you about Rye Barrel Chocolate Porter. The bourbon notes are very mellow and smooth, along with some yummy vanilla. The base chocolate porter shines with delicious notes of dark and milk chocolate. I also pick up faint notes of marshmellow and some oak. It is more sweet than bitter and so delicious! This will most likely be my only new beer today, but it is a dandy. I'm trying to shake a cold I have had this past week, drinking too much beer doesn't seem to help.

@utopiajane I have most all of the Framinghammer variants in my cellar. I had the coffee a while back in NBS and I look forward to trying the vanilla. :grinning: Cheers everyone!

Being non celiac, I'm afraid these products will cause me "problems". Nah, Wicked Weed has a gluten free IPA that is great and is the best I've tried thus far. (Gluten Freek).
