One if my boxes somehow broke, they still dropped it off, but then I received a warning letter from fedex today that it's illegal to ship alcohol (really? Haha) and that I needed to comply with FedEx legal to ship in the future safely.

Anyone ever get one of these?

It's to cover their ass while telling you to keep shipping beer via FedEx.

Do you have an account with them? If not, they tend to treat the shipment as a one-off, although obviously they have the capability to reference shipments originating with your name/address.

*shrug* every system has it's flaws. Though this makes me think it comes down to how much effort the QA clerk puts in when entering the damage info. To say the least, they do the min. required the majority of the time.

    Cheers

Same basic thing happened to @MWolverines66 and I regarding the box he referenced above. I received a call from FedEx QA about a damaged box containing alcohol and was told that since I didn't ship it, there were no legal ramifications for me as the recipient. They gave me the option to have it disposed of by them or to pick it up. Naturally, I chose the second option.

UPS damaged and then discarded a pretty expensive trade of mine a couple weeks ago. No letter, no warning but I now exclusively use FedEx

If every beer trade suddenly stopped using them altogether I wonder how much it would hurt their bottom line? There seem to be dozens of trades closing everyday, and that's this site alone.

LOL. Do you realize they ship 16.9 million packages A DAY around the world?

Considering Fedex's earnings were above 40 billion last year, I doubt they would even notice.

Got a "love note" from FedEx legal about a trade that didn't make it. Came to the conclusion that me shipping beer isn't a problem if they just get my package there safely. Handle with care, especially if I'm dropping $40 to send something across the country.

FedEx is pretty cool. I had a bottle break en route and got a tracking update it was headed back to the sender. When I called, I was initially told they couldn't deliver it to me, but then the next day it showed up anyway. Guess they figured it was easier delivering it the last 50 miles than sending it back 800 miles to where it started. It came completely repacked in a new box with all bottles intact except for the one that broke and leaked.

Fedex is awesome. A regular trading partner sent me a big box of beers from Wisconsin. A couple NG Berliners exploded during transit, Fedex opened the box, removed all the broken glass, repackaged the remaining beers, and then sent them on to me. There was even a form in there detailing what was broken.

On a side note, I shipped UPS a few times when I first started shipping beer and I told them what was in the box when they asked. Dude got on the phone with his boss and asked if they were allowed to ship and the guy said that they were but could only ship 2 bottles. Don't know if that's how it is for every UPS store though, who knows.

I've also been straight up with people at fedex before and they were like well we aren't supposed to ship alcohol normally, but I'll just list it as something else fragile. He was pretty cool about it. I think they really only care if it's an uptight manager or it makes a mess in their truck or warehouse or something.

Got my first letter after a box I sent was "destroyed" somehow. Luckily it was a small shipment and I had extras of each. I did think that it would not have been an issue if FedEx simply would have done what I paid them to do (i.e., deliver it intact).

Makes me a bit paranoid now moving forward, especially for rarer bottles and bigger boxes but guess it happens on occasion regardless of packing quality.
