Experimental Hop 05256 - AA 17.4%

    Anyone familiar with it? Just received about 5 ounces (pellets) and was thinking I'll just do a single hop IPA unless anyone has any other ideas? Also, does anyone know if there's an equation or table to determine how much bitterness you will get from X oz's of this hop in a 5 gal batch?

    I think that a single hop IPA is the best way to try this hop out. There are a number ways to figure out how much bitterness from online calculators, but I understand @VikeMan has quite the spreadsheet.

    My rule of thumb for a 5 gal IPA batch is 1 oz of bittering (high Alpha) hops FWH (60 min boil)
    Since these 05256 are 17.4% AA, I would guess 1oz might make this a tad more bitter than the average 14% high alpha hop
    If you are paranoid it might be too bitter...use a bag or 3/4 oz instead...cheers

    Another way to create a hop schedule is to figure out the number of IBUs that you get from the flavor and aroma hops that you *would like* to use first, then see how many IBUs are still needed for the total bitterness that you want. Add as needed. Could be .25oz at 60 minutes, could be .3 at 45. You might even find that you dont need a bittering addition at all (called hop bursting), as you can easily rack up all the IBUs needed for a pale ale or IPA from 20 minutes left in the boil, for example, through flameout.

    The bottom line with this approach is, you aren't compromising on your hopping rates where it really matters (flavor and aroma) by painting yourself into a corner with a standard 1oz 60 minute addition. Also, you really should make your life a lot easier and get some brewing software to calculate all of this for you.
