Don't eat anything for two days then drink two Aventinus', and you'll have visions AND speak in tongues. It is written!

Here were my thoughts about a year and a half ago, maybe it was older, and therefore drier?

"Picked up a couple bottles of Celebrator tonight due to this thread. I can't believe it's only 6.7%, I thought it hovered around 8. Can't speak to the freshness, because Ayinger does not bottle date. I was under the impression doppelbocks held up with age though? I remember multiple threads in the past about aged Sam Adams Double Bock. I aged it myself and it was fantastic. But this was YEARS ago, and I'm definitely not an expert on the style now, so I was even less so then.

Regardless, a damn fine beer, and well worth the praise. Last month I had Andech's Doppelbock, and I enjoy Celebrator more. The Andech's is much drier, and the Celebrator is much smoother. For my personal tastes Celebrator suits me."

It's definitely possible that if it was past its prime it would start to come across as being a little muted or washed out, which could come across as seeming drier.

FWIW- I love both beers equally, but they are definitely different from one another. There is a purity, balance and elegance that Andechs has that comes across as the perfect expression of those Munich malts.

I can never figure out the dating code on these cases. It is fair priced but it seems to always be there and if I can't tell how old it well I won't and haven't picked it up ever.

Haven't seen the Salvator in stock and have never crossed paths with bells Consecrator, although I would like to.

I go with Troegenator 9/10 times and the other 10% I pick up Celebrator.

While I've not found a Dopplebock I don't like, and while I absolutely love Salvator, Celebrator, Korbinian and Optimator, as well as many others, my all-time favorite is Augustiner Brau Maximator.

I would say of ones I have tried I would go with Capital's Autumnal Fire. I definitely need to grab some Celebrator next time I go to Woodman's, haven't had that one yet. I have heard that Andygator is good and I have enjoyed Capital's Blonde Doppelbock and Spaten's Optimator

    I thought Doppelrock was solid.

Jay did a standard Bock, and has another "bock-ish" beer coming out soon. The standard bock, IMO, is one of the absolute best beers he's ever brewed. I think if he were to enter it into GABF, it'd stand a very, VERY good chance at winning a gold.

Edit: That said, my favorite is probably Celebrator. Or Salvator. Either or.

Ahhh---the monastic life.....beer, meat, cheese, and praises to God......could be worse!

Curious----why do so many Catholics give up beer for lent????? Why not television instead of beer goggles?

Thus it is written, thus it shall be.

Point them towards the Schneider Weisse Tap 5 and prepare to hear the crackling of their minds being blown.

Mhm, if I was to go for something that would replace food I guess the Celebrator would be quite adequate - that stuff is so dense I actually find it hard to drink a bottle in one sitting. Otherwise, I'd probably roll with Weihenstephan and Schneider Weisse (duh) although I don't doubt that Camba's Bocks are pretty good, too.

Aecht Schlenkerla Fastenbier was Lent. I will def. pick that one. Not sure if it counts as a Doppelbock.

I'd be all for trying the bock, but I've never seen it down here in Cincy, or on any of the times I get near Cleveland. Heck, I've never even seen or heard of so much as a single keg of it sent here during BockFest, where I'd see Doppelrock everywhere.

Nothing like a liter mug full of dopplebock, accompanied by maybe some cheese and good pumpernickel bread. Celebrator can be a little too sweet at times, Optimator a little too boozy, though I love them both. To me, Salvator nails it. For an American version, I thought Shiner Commemorator was pretty outstanding.
