While looking for Nugget Nectar at a Whole Foods in NYC tonight (scored!) I found a bottle of Andechs doppelbock, a wonderfully unexpected bonus beer which I've never had before. The date on the back of the bottle seems to use the Julian system—3013—though I'm not 100% sure. The Fresh Beer Only website doesn't have Andechs under its international list, so I'm hoping some fellow BAs can tell me whether this beer was bottled on the 301st day (late October) of 2013, January 30th 2013, or January 13th 2013. Hoping it's the first option. Thanks.

Im goingbto say julian so, 301st day of 2013. I say it because I was discussing andechs with someone who works for a beer distributor tell me about how when he found andechs the first time and he asked the purveyor and he had it explained to him how they use julian dating. So I'd say your okay!

First digit usually is the year  meaning Jan 13 '13 still a fine fine brew

Their website shows the Northeast as the initial distribution area.

St. Killian and S&H Brands are the two importers.

Information below was provided to me by another beer advocate member.

St. Killian is an importer. They are owned by L. Knife and Son, which owns numerous distributors (see list at site) but they also supply non-L. Knife distributors (like Ben E. Keith in TX). I suppose looking at the other brands St. Killian's imports would reveal the distributor if one is familiar with the local's portfolios.

Andechs is also being imported by Colorado-based S&H Brands and their distributors are at http://www.shbrands.com/#!distributors/c1ki9

are You sure? Only reason i ask is flying dog uses a julian best by date with the bottles in my fridge having 140A14 which is a slightly modified meaning its good til the 140th day of the year of 2014. Lagunitas bottles in my fridge say 025 4 as a bottled on date. Just am asking if you know andechs uses this modified version or are you speaking from experience with a diffrrent brewery using a year first julian?

I appreciate the info. My Intl section is woefully not up to date as i'm concentrating on the US side of it.

I find that for the most part, #freshbeer info is easier to read on imports than domestic beers. Thanks for the support!

Really? Local near me has plenty of these. Never would have thought they were hard to come by. 3.99 for a 16oz bottle.

So-called "Julian" dating, is merely a 3 digit "day of the year" system - 1-365(6).

There is no standard of how a year is specified - 1, 2 or 4 digits, before or after the 3 digit "day-of-the-year".

So, 3013 could be any of the options listed by the OP.

And, for German and some other European brewers, it is not uncommon for them to date by "week of the year" so, 3013 could also be the 30th week of 2013.

Since this beer has just started being distributed in the U.S., I can't imagine they're going to send over beer bottled a year ago. I'd go with 301st day of 2013.

My own bottles were closer to mid-June of 2013, so I'm sort of skeptical with that too.

I thought that too, but my bottles had something like 1623, so it kind of negated the 13. I'll double-check them to be sure, though.

Yeah, my lone bottle went out with recycling last week, so I can't check but a variety of dates would help "solve" the code.

I intend to! Doubt it would be bad, even if it is 13 months old. I'd of course prefer that it was the youngest of the date options (late Oct. 2103). Short of having it on tap in Germany, I'd like my first taste of this beer to be as fresh as reasonably possible for an import.

I bought two last week and tried them over those seven days. If you like Doppelbocks, you'll like the Andechs -- and mine seemed to be older than yours.

A great beer! If you are ever in Munich (like for Oktoberfest....everyone has to go at least once in their life), spend the time to visit the monastery southwest of the city. A city train from Munich takes you within a mile or so of the grounds...the walk to the monastery is popular. Check out there web site and make sure to catch it on an open day. It is beautiful and a great way to see the German countryside and many consider their biergarten(s) to be one of the best in Germany.

I went to the Andechs website and contacted them, requesting help in decoding the bottling date. If/when I hear back from them, I'll post their response here.
