    Hey,

I poured a commercially brewed imperial stout into a glass and once the head dissipated, the following thing was floating on top. I spooned it out into a small bowl. It has the consistency of an unbroken yolk. It appears to be a clear membrane with lots of tiny bubbles in it. It reminds me of a jellyfish. I poured another bottle from the same sixer and this was not present. I homebrew and have never seen anything like this, even in bottle-conditioned beer. It doesn't appear to be a "beer oyster." I am going to contact the brewery, but thought I'd check to see what you guys think of it.

Note: Out of respect for the brewery, I did not include the brewery's name. This is not a bottle-conditioned beer.

how was the beer? My first guess is that it's a bottle conditioning gone awry or something that should have been cleaned out from the bottling tank or bottling line

so, if the carbonation is strange (too much or too little) or if it has a bacterial taste/aroma, that might be it. Don't suppose you have a 100x phase contrast microscope handy?

That's fine, but you should contact the brewery directly.

Maybe email the brewery. Get an explaination or reparations.

Slightly on topic here. What would you all say about a black flaky matter that stuck to the bottom of your goblet glass after drinking a 3 year old imperial stout?

I believe it is a SCOBY. It can comprise of a bunch of microorganisms or just a few. Usually found in vinegar but I have seen it in home brews that weren't sour. Don't eat it unless you want to purge your colon.

I didn't think it was an infection because it was transparent. The brewery advised me that it is indeed a fining agent and protein. I use Whirlfloc or Irish Moss so I didn't think of that. This does look like perhaps a gelatin.

It's the "oaky afterbirth" Michael Scott was referring to in The Office.
