Good Sunday morning, BAs ! It's cool, gray and rainy outside, and admittedly, a welcome reprieve from the allergy-inducing deluge of pollen that we have been experiencing. It's a preasure and a plivilege to introduce my submission for this New Beer Sunday : Oskar Blues Brewery's Old Chub.

I am pretty familiar with much of the Oskar Blues lineup-I've had Gubna, Ten Fidy, G'Knight, Pinner, and Deviant before, and as many cans of Dale's as I've had impure thoughts (trust me, that's a lot ). However, up to this point, I've yet to experience the joys of an Old Chub (-insert your own 'enjoying a chub' joke here-). Maybe it was the fear of a haggis aftertaste, or thoughts of Groundskeeper Willie going commando under his kilt, but Scotch Ales and 'Wee Heavys' are a variety that I don't have much experience with. In fact, the only other that I can recall off the top of my, ironically, is Skull Splitter, and that was years ago.

Like all Oskar Blues brews, this is sold in a can. Regardless of the beer (save for the occasional Bud where it doesn't matter), I think beer tastes far better either out of a bottle or served in a glass, so I didn't drink out of the can. I don't have a proper 'thistle' glass, so my trusty tulip will have to do. Anyway, this is a fine brew, brewed on 2/16/15 at the Brevard, NC site. Smooth, with an almost burnt-caramel maltiness at the forefront of both the aroma and taste. Might this be the missing link between a bock and a stout ? I'll ponder that one while watching a rerun of 'Highlander'. The 8.0% abv seems right for the style, and I don't notice it much. There are slight peat undertones, but I don't detect any smokiness. Maybe not the best style for Spring, but I need to remember to revisit this style when it gets cooler again. Definitely something to look forward to - drinking several 'Wee Heavy' brews and then Weeing heavily.

    Cheers, and Happy NBS !!!!!

Yikes! It's not even 10:30 CST and there are already multiple beers reviews on NBS and the first page is nearly complete. We are a hearty crew here at NBS.
And Greetings to each and every one of you!
Man what a nice spring so far in these parts. We've already had two warm stretches and now we just received some needed rain. Cool week on tap, but considering what we've had, Who Cares?!. Last year at this time we will had snow and tons of cancellations of spring sports. This is wonderful.
Today I have one of the best lagers I've ever tasted. An enjoyable solid dark lager aged in whisky barrels. Subtle but incredibly enjoyable. All the good qualities of a lager with some complexity of ales. I recommend this!

A song to bring us into this unbelievably early Presidential primary season. Ugh!

    Best to all this week.

Heh, we've been there already. But the 9th is simply incredible, without precedent (in so many ways), and arguably a century ahead of composers like Schoenberg et al.

But back to the beer. :grinning:

Good morning New BSers! It's a sunny day in NW PA, the first construction project is finished (Well, almost. They put in a white switch and the rest are light almond so I gotta switch it out), we're moving stuff into my wife's new quilting room from the rest of the house, and suddenly that 500+ sq ft addition is looking mighty small. She's going to a quiltfest in IL this week so I'll be making a beer run to eastern PA - maybe I'll finally find some Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout and some of Victory's Kirsch Gose. Of course my wife's pissed when I announced my plans: a few years ago she announced that she and one of her friends were going to London for a week for some quilt thing. I said that was great - I'd go along and hang out while they did whatever they do at quilt shows. She informed me that I wasn't invited. OK with me, I began making arrangements for my son and I to go to Hong Kong while she was gone. The travel agent arranging both trips told her and suddenly the London trip was cancelled. Hopefully she won't have to bail me out of some Philly jail next week.

Anyway, today's new brew is Het Anker's Curvee Van de Keizer Blauw, a very nice if somewhat sweet Belgium dark ale. This is very, very good as long as your insulin pump is working - did I say it was sweet?

This is my favorite style of Belgium-based brew - I love the "dark fruit" flavors - to me they're dates and figs. Oops - gotta finish this up because this bottle is nearly gone and I still have to post in WBAYDN!

Had to take a hiatus last week due to our of town business but I'll be back later today with a NEW beer from a brewery I've visited frequently lately and am really enjoying. From here on in its Spring into Summer full speed ahead. Gotta get some work done but I'm already smacking my lips checking out the entries so far. Have a fine day!

C&Ps out of the way. .G'day NBS faithful!

Spring is trying to make another comeback after a few days of inclimate weather.

My new beer is another from The Wild Beer Company in the UK. Far from being my favourite from the brewery, it was still tres cool for the opportunity to try it. The brewery does do some wild and crazy things. Hmm..I don't recall where I have heard that before.

And cheers to Roger for getting NBS up and going.

Two man bottle share at my house last night spilled into the wee hours of today so I'm gonna post the damage done here. May be back later for a more traditional NBS post if my liver allows it:

    From L to R-
Jackie O's - Bourbon Barrel Black Maple
    Prairie - Pirate Bomb
Mikeller - Beer Geek Vanilla Shake
Three Floyds/Pig Destroyer - Permanent Funeral
    Pipeworks/4 Hands - Square Grouper
    Funky Buddha - Last Snow
    Pipeworks - Toasty Nub Abduction

What an awesome lineup of beers, one I recieved via a traditional (though running with little of the "I'll send you this for that" going on) and the rest came via various BIF boxes.

The Funky Buddha Last Snow stole the show for sure, crazy amount of coconut on the nose but even more coconut flavor. I'd compare it to liquid coconut cream cake.

    Cheers everyone!

Past two weeks it's been out. Some Stag Series are all over the place, others are hard to find. I really don't know how much they made of this. I'm guessing less rather than more, due to barrel aging.

Hooray it is NBS! Southern WI just had one of the best weeks of April in many years. Sunny and warm I rode my bike to work all week. Today it all ends as a cold front moves in and settles in for the next week. Good thing I have plenty of beer to keep my spirits up!

Went to the store this morning craving a IIPA and came home with Evil Twin Molotov Lite. The aroma is bold and hoppy with green and bitter notes. Mangos, grapefruit, and a bit of pine intertwine nicely with the sweet malt.

The tasted follows the nose with a big bitter big on the front. It is quite green with flavors of grapefruit rind, mango, pine and some herbal notes. A mild sweetness creeps into the middle but the finish is massively bitter.

A really nice IIPA that is very well hopped and does not have too much alcohol.

Good Sunday NBS and thanks to Roguer for keeping us on task today.
Warm and dry in WMASS, the river is up and that means VT and NH are continuing there
annual melt. The yard is near done, and YO LA TENGO is playing as I type.
Today is Victory Kirsch Gose test day.
I applaud the larger brewing community for extending their reach and working in this style.
This version has little to hide and does a fine job of avoiding that syrupy trap that oft happens with cherry
    additions.
    Enjoy the day all

    Kirsch Gose

    Victory Brewing Company
    Gose / 4.70% ABV

    3.68/5 rDev -7.1% | rAvg: 3.96
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Poured form a 12 oz bottle not dated in any form, into a modified tulip glass.
A - Hibiscus colored, very gentle carbonation train supports a reluctant off white cap.
Lace splotches dot the glass through the experience .
S - Spring like botanical smells, lead with cherry, followed by tropical notes, blood orange citrus is next.
T - Right off cheery sweetness and Gose tartness begin to disagree! With some reluctance they work towards some balance. The risk of cherry take over is kept at bay by the brewers. Salinity is less than other Gose offerings. Consume chilled though, as it warms the sweetness is more assertive.
M - Light and sweet to begin, then the sides of the tongue roll up recognizing the tartness on its way. There is a wheat grain round feel to the beer, and surprisingly little salinity that works well with the fuits.
O - The Gose train continues, this version is less tart and less crisp than others. That said it is quite enjoyable on its own. The cheery addition pushes the beer toward the dessert side of the fence, as a matter of fact a scope of vanilla ice cream would make for a great float! Off to the freezer.
    Certainly worth seeking out.
    Cheers

My first beer from Avery in a long time... my first from them was White Rascal (unfortunately), so it's nice to have tried this beer.

I don't know if they use rye in this beer in any fashion, but it comes off rye-ish, and I really dig it. If I were going to fault it, it'd be that I don't see a date anywhere on the bottle. Fresh or not (it seems at least relatively fresh), this beer tastes great.

    Cheers, BA!

    Review:

$7 bomber poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint. My first from Avery since a couple years ago when I had their mediocre White Rascal.

Appearance: Pretty sexy. Very slightly hazy burnt orange color with two fingers of a creamy head on top -- dies down to a thin layer, but there's lots of lacing. Great looking IPA. (4.5/5)

Smell: Pretty herbal and floral with quite a big dash of rye, to my nose -- slight citrus as well to brighten it up. A bit maltier than I was anticipating, but it's very nice/pretty unique. (4/5)

Taste/feel: Almost identical to the smell: floral/herbal hop flavors, some rye spiciness (with quite a lot of rye flavor), and a nice citrus peel sort of vibe. A unique tasting IPA, for sure -- I'm surprised so few people mention rye, because this could be a RyePA in my book. Aftertaste is a fantastic combination of juiciness, rye spiciness, and bitterness, and is definitely my favorite part about Dugana. One of the best finishes I've had in awhile. The feel is just about perfect: medium bodied, a little silky, and a moderate carbonation. (4.25/5, 4.75/5)

Excellent beer. I guess it's a *little* pricey per ounce, but who can complain when the beer's this good? I wouldn't make it a beer I'd have often (just because I don't like rye tasting beers constantly), but it doesn't change the fact it's a must try for IPA and rye beer fans alike.

    4.25/5

    4.26/5 (+2.9% rDev)
