I get soy sauce sometimes in a stout, last one was the Founders Imperial Stout (bottled Dec 2014). Am I the only one, and is this usual/unusual? Any opinions/thoughts?

I get this too. I have experienced it with FIS and BA Legion.

Three Floyds Dark Lord is colloquially known as "Soy Sauce Lord" or, unrelated but alternatively, "Diabetes Lord."

I find BCBS has a fair amount of umami as well.

I've never gotten soy sauce, but I do pick up olives quite a bit. It could be the same thing, but we just perceive it a little differently since both are salty/briny aromas.

I well remember drinking a Salopian Entire Butt Porter and recognizing a brief soy sauce nuance. Drier than sweet malt, but rich dark malt, nicely lean as a whole, a little sour touch, but well done. I can't find them anymore.

I popped open a Sam Adams triple Nick a year or two ago. It tasted like soy sauce but you could still tell that it was great once upon a time. But man oh man, that salty soy sauce took a while to wash down.

Against the Grain Takeshi. Aged in Bourbon Barrels that previously held Soy Sauce.

    Umami bomb! So good.

my favorite is from Tawain, Kimlan natural brewed/aged... just awesome soy...

Honestly never had a beer that taste like soy sauce, an I've been eating that stuff since I was 7 years old !

My wife has complained about soy sauce flavors in stouts. I thought she was crazy, but am glad she now has a support group.

My favorite soy sauce is Golden Mountain from Thailand. But I suppose that's off track. Soy sauce is great, and I use a lot of it, but I don't want my beer to taste or smell like it and I have gotten that a few times.

It is a common complaint I hear from many people for certain brews though no question.

Any explanation for what causes it? It seems to be random in my case.

This is nowhere near a scientific observation, but I wonder if it's a matter of differing taste buds? I know it's proven that different people have different taste receptors. It might also explain why certain people taste onion in Enjoy By, which I've never experienced anything close to.

That's a good example. I get no onion at all from Enjoy By.
