    Hello, NBSers!

My first marzen of the year means that summer is officially winding down. I had the pleasure of trying Ayinger's take on the style today.

A: pours a golden reddish orange with a huge rocky head
S: the nose is a nice mix of sweet caramel and hay
T: wow! what a nice blend of caramel, walnuts, melon, hay, honey. Each sip is a pleasure. A long earthy hop finish rounds out each sip.
M: SOFT mouthfeel with a medium amount of carbonation.
O: lovely marzen. will buy again.

    Prost!

    [IMG]Happy New Schwarzbier Sunday!

Very smokey Sunday here in the Western Slopes of CO, around 90. Did a little hike, bought a new coffee table, and having a pretty tasty brew. Many many years have passed since the last time I've had anything from this very tasty brewery. Very glad to see it available to me here. I might come back with another new brew.

Good Sunday NBS, thanks Maria for getting us started and keeping us focused.
Today was the Heath Fair day here in WMass, a tiny and delightful country fair high in the
hilltowns of Franklin County. Watched ox draws and a parade of old tractors, had a fine barbecue chicken
dinner put on by the local firemen. You know its a fair when the kids attractions included a huge dirt pile ringed with
toy trucks, tractors and shovels! And it was packed with kids even during some rain.
Today is also new raspberry farmhouse Sunday from Smuttlabs, the body and flavors are a bit confounding.
This has a great nose, and solid body, a wonderful expression of brewers stretching definition.
    Cheers all

    Smuttlabs Rouge De’Shire

    Smuttynose Brewing Company
    Saison / Farmhouse Ale / 4.90% ABV

    3.79/5rDev n/a | rAvg: 3.79
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

Poured from a cage and cork 375ml bottle into a modified tulip glass. Bottled in June 2015.
A - Dark mahogany colored, vibrant streams of carbonation trane rapidly to support a thin off white cap. No lacing throughout the experience.
S - Late season raspberries, sawmill fresh white oak, a wisp of toffee, hints of vanilla, stonefruit, red plum and fresh red wheat.
T - Slightly tart, clearly raspberries, but not overbearing. The oak element offers the vanilla, the blend reminds me more of a fruited lite bodied barleywine, than an oak farmhouse ale. As the temp rises the oaked elements rise to the front.
M - Starts with a burst of fruits, rolling around the palate, oily and a bit fat. The edges of the palate are left to wonder while the cap and back of the palate experience the majority. A sweet lingering calling card is the only evidence.
O - I am impressed with the Smuttlabs project, this beer is no exception. Challenging, packed with compounding flavors. The body is consistent. A wonderful if experience, and fine offering.

Good afternoon fellow NBS-ers! Today's entry for me (which I referenced in WBAYDN#1035) {Horns Up Friday Edition \m/ \m/} is from a brewer that was sorta local to me when I lived in PA and I never got a chance to visit or try anything from them and apparently I had to move to Florida to get some.
    Tired Hands Astral Plane
    [IMG]
A wheat Saison fermented and conditioned in large oak foudres with their resident yeast and bacteria.

Poured from a 500ml bottle into my Weyerbacher Cuvee glass. Opaque golden orange body with a fingers worth of head; tons of tiny little bubbles that last and last. Minimal amount of lacing. Tiny bubbles constantly streaming up along the sides of the glass.
Definitely getting a funkiness on the nose; peaches, ripe pear and some vinegar.
First sip you get that tingling tart with some sourness and a fermented apple/pear juice taste.
Finish is dry and clean, with a light amount of sourness on the tip and sides of the tongue.
Overall, a very funky beer and worth a try.

Thanks again @punxsybob for bringing this one with you from PA to FL and stopping by on your vacation the other day!

    Cheers Big Ears!

Hello all! A bit chilly and windy (barely at 70), but sunny, here in the Milwaukee area today. Today's selection is from Sixpoint - 4Beans. I LOVE it! Rich and complex but with a lager smoothness. The 10% abv is well-hidden. I scored it a 4.41 (slightly higher than the current average of 4.22. I certainly recommend this one!

S - lightly floral with bakers yeast and fresh biscuit dough
T - Clean, bready with a touch of clover honey and a clean slightly bitter finish
F - lightly carbed and smooth

Overall a very well executed pils. A hoppier than standard, but in line with other american examples.

Got another one up for today. When I started drinking better beer, the Trappist beers held a special place. Some still do. Anyway, when I started to see the American Trappist beer from St. Joseph's Abbey in Spencer MA crop up in Chicago, I knew I had to grab some. So here it goes

    Spencer Trappist Ale
    [IMG]

Just realized that I cut the S off in the picture.

The appearance is a golden orange in the middle, blooming out into lighter shades of straw when light hits it. Nice fluffy, chalky, white head.

Smell has the typical yeast esters. A white pepper spice and some notes of lemongrass.

Flavor has a nice yeast spice. Slight sweet notes play on the tongue. Lighter stone fruit flavors linger in the background.

Mouthfeel is rich and slightly creamy.

Overall a great beer. And I was excited to try the American version of Trappist beer.

Good afternoon NBS crew. Today I am trying the Panty Dropper Porter from Sick-N-Twisted Brewery in tiny Hill City South Dakota. I picked this up while in the Black Hills in June as one of the only local bombers I could find.

Unfortunately the name is the only thing notable about the beer.....
It pours a very dark brown with 1 inch creamy tan head, minimal lacing on the glass.
Smells like a brown ale, very weak chocolate notes.
Tastes like a typical porter with some roast, some weak chocolate and slight bitterness.
It's not a bad beer at all but pretty weak tasting/smelling for an 8% imperial porter.

    Overall a 3.29 rating.

    It's been a great weekend.
Puerto Vallarta is only two weeks away, 68 miles and 5000' of climbing between yesterday on my bike and it's the nine year anniversary of the day I had my first date with my now wife. I'm a sap, I know. Met her on Craigslist of all places. As soon as I saw her I thought was getting punked because girls that look like that don't go on CL to meet guys.
    But I digress...
Found this in the cooler yesterday on my bike ride/beer hunt and figured it'd be great today.
    Sho nuf, it is.
    Really nice look and pour.
Nice lacing that lingers like a Cranberries song.
The nose, as soon as I cracked the cap, hit me with fruit, most noticeably mango.
The flavor, while very enjoyable, isn't the hop jimmie kick that I was going for. Maybe it's because this is "officially" a month old?
None the less, enjoyable and I'll grab any (okay, most) Stone one-off's (that Chai IRS nor the green tea one never even crossed my mind).

New American Saison Sunday (week 548)

Greetings NBS ers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Y'all k now I'm a green guy to the nth degree, but today was quite humbling. A couple I have known as customers for years told me y'day they wanted to thank me for all I do, and did I want some salmon? I said sure, I love salmon. Today they brought me in about 30 lb's of frozen salmon they caught last fall, and thanked me again. It was embarrassing listening to them recounting how they'd seen me do this and help that person, but man, it also felt really good. I also got another 20 lbs of tomatoes from other customers, and Mr. David gave me a bag of 20 peppers, including this beauty in top pic (you don't really want to see pics of frozen salmon, do you?). I feel blessed to know folks like this, and being green is its own reward, and I would do what I do if no one ever said thank you to me for the rest of my life.

Speaking of blessed, I missed this beer first time around, quite excited to see it made again, and on shelf promptly at my local! If you see this near you, grab it. 7.99, not cheap for a saison, but good news it is only a saison in the imagination of American brewers and it is worth every penny I paid. Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

Any other NBSers ever had to postpone posting their New Beer Sunday beer because they have other beers that need to be drank first and don't qualify? That's me today. Gonna share a Yellow Rose (a truly phenomenal beer, so I'm hardly complaining) with a friend and then I hope to get to a new beer shortly after.

    Enjoy your Sunday, folks!

    New DIPA Sunday

Here's something from a brewery none of you have heard of. Mully's out of Prince Frederick, MD has been releasing stuff recently in my area, without doing anything particularly impressive. And yet, here comes a DIPA from these guys - Tongue Crusher.

    [IMG] (toppin' it off)

For the record, this is coming from the most local-to-me brewery out there (Mully's), though they haven't done anything impressive yet. This has some promise, however. It's a big-ass lemon bomb - rather than focusing on grapefruit, pine, or tropical fruits, this brings lemon and lime like a truck. I pick up minimal malt, so this is pulling off the west-coast IPA impersonation quite well. And the taste lives up to the aroma. Big lemon and lime flavors open it up, while it finishes gently piny. As it opens up, I start picking up some earth, tobacco, and stone fruit. Malt sweetness only has a subtle presence on the back end. This isn't a new-school DIPA, as there's no tropical fruit or Mosaic strangeness, but it still utilizes its hops quite well. Amarillo lovers will dig the fuck out of this one. Even better, it's crisp and dry yet deceptively easy to drink in that way a good DIPA should always be like. The textural bulk and even the sweetness level is DIPA-appropriate, though drinkability is at single IPA standards. Not my favorite DIPA ever, but really good nonetheless - it can hold its own with the Ruinations and Hop Stoopids of the world, that's for sure. Great work, Mully's!

    (3.5/3.75/3.75/4/3.75)

3.76/5: Where did this come from?!
