    Howdy fellow BA's.

Couldn't find anything on this subject so I figured I'd make a new thread.

Anybody have any idea on which specific hop or combination of hops yields the terribly off-putting ( in my opinion ) onion and garlic flavors in a beer? I'm Eastern European so hence a Vampire so garlic is a no no All jokes aside, I've had this happen with quite a few beers from DIPAs to Porters to regular American Stouts.

Three Heads Too Kind is a DIPA that comes to mind that tasted like I was taking a bite into a raw onion freshly pulled from the dirt. I'm asking the question because I would like to know what to look for in the future to AVOID these beers at all costs.

    Thanks.

Hmmm a few of these beer responses surprise me.

I really liked Enjoy By, and I thought Hop Stoopid was solid though not as good as everybody says.

Not sure about the hops but the first beer I noticed this with was Stone' Enjoy By.

Original recipe Gubna was the king.

I get lots of Summit hop flavor (very particular onion/garlic/marijuana type flavor) in Otter Creek Backseat Berner--and I love it. Beer has a great shelf life for an IPA too, > month out and its still dank as hell. If it doesn't actually have Summit in it, I'm a monkey's uncle.

To me, most highly sessionable-beers have a high green onion note to them.

I get a lot of onion and garlic in New Belgium's Ranger IPA. When I say "a lot", I mean that's all I taste.

@Pahn I've had a few DIPAs with the whole marijuana ordeal going on and I enjoyed it. Really didn't pick up any onion in them though. Or maybe the other flavors overruled it to a point where I didn't notice.

@nc41 Thanks for the heads up, almost bought a six pack a few days back.

@Monkeyknife I get what you're saying, but for me the sessiona IPAs and such usually get a bit cloyingly sweet after the first three. Not sure why.

@MattSharpless I actually picked up a lot of onion in Rampant by New Belgium. so if you haven't had it, and don't like onion, I'd say avoid haha

It actually doesn't :grimacing:. But I suppose it could be the simcoe.

amazing. i think it probably uses one of those newer hops that has elements of others and throws me off. or i'm just imagining it. all that matters is it's delicious though.

do you know what other hops are in it?

yeah, simcoe can be a bit marijuana-y, even moreso chinook can and (arguably--i think so) citra, some of those new tropical ones, nelson and the australian/new zealand hops are often earthy to the point of being cheesy but they can definitely taste like weed. even nugget is a bit weedy now and then.

    ---

nuts if berner doesn't have it. i swear i taste the straight dank of green flash IIPA, gubna, and my own homebrewed summit IPAs when i taste backseat berner. has kind of a mossman (old heman toy from the 80s) patchouli thing that i've very rarely tasted--exclusively in other beers that advertise their summit. but, if it's not there, it's not there.

Huh. I've always gotten straight up heavy pine and alcohol qualities out of Hopslam.

As for Summit/Simcoe hops, that would make a lot of sense. After a bit of research, The Too Kind DIPA I mentioned earlier was brewed specifically with those two.

it uses Cascade Citra and Simcoe. I wouldn't comment if I wasn't sure, I spend a lot of time at that brewery - its so close to me. I agree with your comment on Chinook I get the same flavor. Cheers!
