Nice juicy and slightly spicy nose with a sort of sweetness to it as well.

I can taste a little straw or grass before a tiny bit of tartness. Further drinking provides little else other than a bitterness of nondescript nature. Maybe it's lemony, but overall it's a bit of a mess I especially considering how thin and soulless this seems.

At the brewery today, but wanted to post the winner of the day, for me (and it is new):

Adroit Theiry CULT 013 Nova Initia (on the left):
I posted this randomly before that the brewery offers a "cult" membership where a member gets to brew a beer with the Brewers. Just talked to my friend who went this route and he's scheduled for early October. The offerings I've had are generally good, but mostly average.

The #13 version is not average. I'm not going today it's going to change the world, but a solid quad flavor-wise (tad thin on feel). Raisins, dates/figs, cherries, very drinkable.

The brewery does repeat beers, but has a philosophy of all one-offs. Hoping they don't treat this as one, extra hope as it is a "collaboration" of sorts.

Oh-the other is the non-nitro bourbon-barrel "caramel macchiato milk stout" I shared on WBAYDN. I'm sorry NBS, that thread met my needs at the time, and I was weak...

New American Black Ale Sunday (week 551)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val NY. Scrapped my ass off this morning at work. Yeah, it was one of those days, those who know me will know what that means. No time for anything, worked extra to catch up, sweated my ass off, ran around like a mad person, and now it is well deserved gimme a fuckin beer time (not to worry, I just renewed my Poetic License, I am allowed to use and misspell aggressive language).

Had such high hopes for this one, as every other Knee Deep brew we've tried has been first class. Kinda glad I didn't bring this one to share. It is very strongly flavored, crazy complex, lotsa roast, and should be the kind of beer I enjoy, but it is just has too much of a harsh linger.

Hope you have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

I'd love to get that one regularly. Our local Gose isn't quite as Gosey as this one.

Well, back for a rare, second NBS post. The Jets game stinks, the weather is almost Fall-like so I'm out on the patio for a while. Haven't had a Magic Hat beer in a few years. Got this one as a single. Big Hundo has big flavors. First of all, very cloudy with a huge white head. Smells a little tricky. I get some hop pungency but I can't quite identify the aromas overall. Taste is nice! Plenty bitter, with 100 IBUs. I get some candied fruit taste here. Overall, a really tasty DIPA from Magic Hat. Nice! Damnit it's starting to rain!

Oddly enough, we've had hockey here going back 50 years. As a young fellow we used to go to the Greensboro Coliseum and watch the Greensboro Generals play the Charlotte Checkers, Johnstown Jets, New York Islanders, and others. We loved hockey and it thrived for years. The league is now defunct, disbanding in 2004. They were the old East Coast Hockey League, and lots of the Canadian guys stayed and raised their families here.

Stone 19th Anniversary DIPA ~ THUNDERSTRUCK!!

Stone says this beer “BRINGS THE BOOM”!

    • First, I'm gettin' a little fruitiness up-front! Then "poof!" It's gone.
    • Good "malt backbone"! Yeah, I've never totally understood that term, but I'm "feeling it" in THUNDERSTRUCK.
    • Nice herbal quality too!
    • This beer looks rich. Lovely gold color! (although I've never observed a color I didn't like)
    • It's hoppy of course.
    • THUNDERSTRUCK DIPA is awesome! Nice price as always. (Stone are thoughtful capitalist pigs. They could easily have tacked another buck on this.)
    • I highly recommend THUNDERSTRUCK for you DIPA lovers.

    • Good bitter aftertaste too!!

    Good… bitter... aftertaste… ?

    bitter…?

Speaking of bitter aftertaste, today I’m paying my quarterly taxes.

"Dammit Jim!! Stop whining, you're not the only one!"

    Thank you Doctor.

I’m. Picking up. A VERY. Bitter. Aftertaste. From this. Check. Writing!
    • VERY BITTER!
    • BITTER WITH CAT PISS!!!
    • ONION DANK! WTF? ( @utopiajane is right, there might be a tad onion in Thunderstruck too. We are after all talking about Stone.)

Bottom line: I have bitter tax face.

Greetings, NBSers! Greetings and salutations to each of you on this fine almost-autumn afternoon. This morning was spent cooking and relaxing with a new book (Michael Pollan's In Defense of Food, which is awesome so far) and the afternoon/evening will include a bike ride to my wife's folks' place for dinner and surely a couple beers.

Today's new beer comes from one of my favorite breweries and is a style of which I'm not too familiar. In the glass is Odell's Oktoberfest.

Through the speakers is Far From Any Road, from local heroes The Handsome Family:

A: (before we get to the beer itself I have to give props to Odell for yet another beautiful label design. Their graphic artist(s) do a fantastic job and this offering is no exception) Oktoberfest has a deep, rich golden-brown color but is still light enough to see through. A finger's width of white head quickly forms and then quickly dissipates.

S: bready maltiness is the first aroma, followed by a sweet yeasty note.

T: malts and bread stand out big time. Actually, the first thing I noticed was the low carbonation and lightness of the brew. Very interesting and surprising. It's quite sweet over the tongue and finally shows a bit of bitterness as it goes down.

M: very light carbonation and overall feel. There is also a bit of syrupy-ness to it, of which I'm not a huge fan.

O: since I am not well versed in the style I don't have a true basis of comparison. However, I think it's a pleasant beer and another solid offering from Odell. Sweet and biscuity with low carbonation... much different than the IPAs I'm used to drinking most often.

    Score: 89/100

Have a great Sunday and upcoming week, NBSers. Cheers!

Back for another and switching gears to something hoppy that has been the focus of much attention around these parts lately. This beer, along with the Alesmith release in Illinois prompted me to do some shopping across the border. I'm reviewing Pipeworks Lizzard King Mosaic hopped pale ale. There's no visible canning date and the abv. is 6.0%. Let's have a peek!

Pours a very boring pale straw color with little foam or carbonation. The aroma is tropical fruit salad heaven with passion fruit, guava, and pineapple. The flavor almost mirrors the aroma with passion fruit, guava, pineapple and a bit of butyl in the finish.

Overall a great beer despite a couple of shortcomings with the boring appearance and feel. The aroma and flavor are money. I think even pissy face Jay Cutler in the background approves! I sure hope they brew this regularly. With that said, Cutler throws the probable game ending interception. I need more beer!

Hmmm, used to go watch the Long Island Ducks in that league at Commack Arena, and there were the New York Rovers for a year or two. But the Islanders? Not too sure your memory is on the money, but I could be wrong. That was a fun league.

Good Afternoon BAs! It is a spectacular day in TN, with blue skies, white clouds, sun, and temps in the high 60s. A perfect day to settle in for some football. The Titans are currently tied for first place in the AFC South, and I'm pregaming for the Mariota/Winston 1-2 rookie QB match-up - should be interesting!

I picked up a mix-six of German Marzens and created my own Sunday match-up:

Look: Both had nice dark amber hues. The Spaten was clear and the Paulaner was a bit hazy. The Spaten had a thick off-white head that lingered; the Paulaner had a thin whiter one that left quickly.

Aromas were similar. Muted notes of dark bread and biscuit. I picked up some spicy hop notes in the Spaten.

Taste: the Paulaner had a mild lighter malty character, with some cracker and also a little grassiness. I thought the Spaten was richer with more up-front malt and a sweeter, cleaner feel. There was also a soft floral/spicy hop presence, like in the smell.

Feel: similar, medium carbed and bodied.

Overall: I enjoyed both for sure, but prefer the Spaten. For my taste: Ayinger = SN > Spaten > Paulaner, but I would buy any of these again.

    Cheers!

    Quick review AWFUL
12 oz bottle poured into snifter

A: black in appearance with a small head that is chocolate in color that is gone in a flash

S: The rum is front and center with that molasses and burnt sugary smell but there is a good deal of chocolate on the nose as well

T: has a flat soda coca cola like flavor the flavors are hard to distinguish alcohol is very present chocolate I can not taste

    M: thin and flat tasting

O: Very disappointed in this that coca cola flat flavor is not what I'm looking for in a beer. This is my first disappointment with rum barrel aging. If I didn't know this was a stout I never would have guessed from the flavor.
