Picked up a few style ticks at the bottle shop this afternoon in hopes of getting closer to the 100 mark.

First up, Aventinus Eisbock. This is a nice looking beer. Clear dark brown and generous head. Both flavor and aroma have a nice mix of dark fruits with caramel and molasses. Very well crafted beer and highly recommended.

What started as a 21-3 lead is now a 28-33 loss. Ah, the pain of being a Lions fan. But hey, some fans do have it worse. Speaking of Cleveland...

A little more breathing room on the date than the last one. The aroma has a good amount of sticky, sweet hoppiness for a pale ale. The taste is much more balanced. The hops come out the gate almost as strong as the aroma suggested, but the malt follows quickly and adds some nice body to the palate. The finish is pretty much an even summary of both of those elements. This is a very good APA. If Sierra Nevada's offering wasn't priced so well and more available (despite being one state away, I don't see this one on the shelves very often), I could see myself reaching for this one again. But, by no means is this beer significantly inferior. 3.97/5

In the quickest ever NBS recommendation-to-try I've ever done (that actually involved a new purchase), I give you Ayniger Jahrhundert Bier:

Grabbed the last one from the shelf from the same store I grabbed the AleSmith (they had more, so maybe it wasn't a fluke - at only a $ more than I paid, so "I didn't cheat" them too bad).

I actually rated this higher than @NotAlcoholicJustAHobby - it was a very enjoyable beer for me at this point. The beer was almost transparent, despite what my pictures show, with a pale yellow hue to it. The head never wavered from a half a centimeter disc atop the surface - definitely thick enough for the smurf hockey league, were it ice.

This beer was a bit flowery sweet, but that's about all I could find wrong with it. If it were a tad more balanced, I'd have been completely wowed. The beer isn't completely out of balance, so there is some balancing bitterness that loses in the long run. I think the original poster of this beer hit the key points pretty well, I just appreciated the look and feel a bit more when I was handing out points.

Cheers @NotAlcoholicJustAHobby - and thanks for the recommendation!

First time with the regular version of this. I have tried the BA version, so I am perhaps a bit skewed. Poured from fridge temp to tulip.

Look: nice carbonation, dark brown, opaque
Smell: Caramel, fig, dark fruit. Not as aromatic as the BA version.
Taste: Much more powerful than the nose. Not as sweet as some english barleywines, even a bit bitter. Definitely some caramel, but also some roasty malts that weren't apparent on the nose. Gets better as it warms.

Hello, NBSers. After mowing the ovaltine estate grounds on a glorious Minnesota pre-fall Sunday, I had to jump in the ring with this dandy lawnmower beer before attacking the pork chops in the background.

Look: brilliant pale gold, the slightest bit hazy, 2 fingers of white head. Beautiful beer.

Smell: Pilsner malts, grassy hops - and a touch of lemony/citrusy hops on top.

Taste: nice Pilsner bite, grassy notes everywhere - and the lemon flavors kick this beer up a notch and a half.

Feel: very bright and bubbly, but also very smooth.

Overall: this (and Surly Hell) are the quintessential Minnesota lawnmower beers. I love Surly, and Indeed is in that league.

I was out on Long Island yesterday, hoping to enjoy a nice evening at the ballpark with my brother and our kids, but the weather had different plans. At least I got a chance to sample my first Sam Adams Rebel IPA in what seems like its natural setting-
    [IMG]
Nice little beer, orange peel and pine nose, good snap of bitterness on the finish. Plus, it's great to have selections like this available in these situations- so cheers to Samuel Adams for that! Too bad I couldn't have any more, because by the middle of the second inning we were soaked and the tarp came out to cover the field.
Thankfully my brother can't leave the store without it, either (again from last night)-
    [IMG]
This wasn't a new beer to me, but seemed too much of a coincidence for me to leave out . I need to make this beer more of a regular grab as well; it was just exceptional, as always.

But this is New Beer Sunday, after all- so what the hell am I getting into tonight, you may ask? Something intriguing from Weyerbacher is up at the plate-
    [IMG]
D'Tango Unchained (and what a terrible, awkward name for a beer. :grimacing: ) It's a Belgian Dark Ale with cherries, and aged in oak barrels with Brettanomyces- sounds like it could be fun.

The nose hits you with that earthy, funky brett right off the bat, but the oak and cherries are not too far behind. A little swirl brings out some caramel and sweet spices, and a surprisingly airy overall feel to it all. That might come from impressions of dried citrus rind, which is what I'm sensing at the moment. It's all tightly knit, and nothing really overpowers anything else. The palate is much more earthy and oaky than the nose, almost powerfully so initially, but they retreat quickly once the beer is swallowed, leaving the smooth stylings of sweet cherry wine to linger for a while. More spices and fruit come out to join the cherries as I get deeper into the glass, as the initial funky blast starts the cycle anew. And 'smooth' seems to be the operative word at this point- the residual sugars, bitterness and alcohol are all so finely tuned to create this plush, mellow experience. What started as disjointed has now become incredibly complementary, as the wood and brett give needed depth and complexity to the fruity/spicy base beer. Very easy-drinking and tasty stuff A- (4.3)

Hello NBS crew! Haven't been able to post on here in a while. First, because Sunday's have been so busy this summer. Also, when I did have some time, I unfortunately didn't have a new brew to share. Glad I am able to get on today.

Picked up this as a free sample from my go to beer store. It's a beer from fairly new Conshohocken Brewing Co., which is only a few miles from my house. I love the hockey themed name.

    16 oz. can

Pours dark orange and carries with it a bit of a red tint. Pretty clear and looks as if it was filtered until I pour the rest of the can in the glass. Look is then very murky. Minimal head dissipates almost immediately. The nose is predominately Belgian yeast with some grassy undertones and a little fruit juice, apple juice maybe?

Taste carries the yeastiness and then the expected banana flavors. Some sweetness likened to hard candy and some of the apple notes carry thru onto the palate as well. Alcohol not detected much at all. Opens up more sweetness as it warms.

Medium body but carbonation is much less than I was expecting. A touch syrupy but finishes quite clean, with little aftertaste. Nice example of a good tripel.

New Fruit Flavored Beer Sunday: Yard's Pynk.

Evenin NBSers with special call out to all you fans of fruit flavored beers.

Well a mixed weather day here but comfortably cool and only a few scatted patches of rain. When not watching some football my wife and I did some housecleaning in the garage and found some stuff to throw out so that other stuff could be stored in its place. (Does this process never end?)

This evening's new beer is Pynk from Yards, which is based in Philly and makes several very nice English style beers that are part of my regular fridge rotation. Interestingly since its first release back in 2003 I've only just tonight tried the raspberry/sour cherry refreshing delight called Pynk. It is definitely tart from the cherries and better than a Pop-Tart (but then I guess maybe that isn't a good comparison for this beer, since what isn't better than a Pop-Tart.... :grinning: ).

As usual my review is in progress here (and is subject to revision until I've finished the beer):

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/450/13745/?ba=drtth

As I've mentioned more than once over the last several weeks, I've a couple of good friends who've been generous enough to loan me some old vinyl so I can renew my acquaintance with, and interest in, some of the music my parents and grandparents enjoyed. Scattered through odd moments of the day I've had some Glenn Miller on the player. For those who may not know, Miller, was a band leader, played the trombone and was a big name and influence in the Swing/Big Band era. His life and career were cut short by WWII during travel to provide entertainment for the troops. Here's a sample of some of the work that made him famous:

    Cheers, all!

I attended the 7th Annual Smoke’em if yous got em beer festival at Yard’s Brewing Company. I have not been to all seven events; I would guess the last four events.

They had 34 beers listed for this event. I did not have all of these beers but I had quite a few.

I did not take extensive tasting notes but I did rate the beers that I tasted on scale of 5-1 (5 being best):

I only rated one beer as a 5: Nodding Head Ich Bi Ein Berliner Berliner Weisse. I have had this beer before and it was AWESOME as ever!

Another noteworthy beer was Forest & Main Rainbow Crow: “An orange hued saison with smoked hops and fermented with foraged Ambler, PA yeast. Notes of autumn fires, dried fruit and herbal hops. 4.5% ABV.

A new beer I had was Schlenkerla Weizen (photographed below). I thought this beer was OK.

I could go on and on and on about other beers I had but this is all I will discuss for now.

Cheers to Yards Brewing for another wonderful event!!

First thing I noticed upon opening this beer is a strong sour scent, right up there with some of the better sours I've had. Beer is jet black with just a hint of brown head, dissipates quickly with little to no lacing. Flavor is strong sourness at the beginning, then some roasty/chocolately notes, followed by even more sourness on the finish. Feel is slightly thick for a sour, dry pucker on the finish.

Overall this is a very interesting beer, doesn't sound like it would work on paper but everything blends together so well.

    Cheers!

I've looked forward to trying this. Both the smell and taste are pretty unique. Overall, I enjoyed it but I wouldn't make a steady diet of it. Here's my review:

    3.89/5 rDev +2.6%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Poured into snifter glass. The color is a a rosy-orange with a frothy tan head and lacing. It's a fairly unique color. The smell is also rather unusual with the yams and a lot of yeast and spice: cinnamon, cloves. There is also some lemon. In a weird way, it reminds me of cocktail sauce. The taste is spicy and the yam taste is unique. There is also some faint sweetness from the molasses. I didn't taste the maple syrup. This ale is nicely carbonated and although the ABV is 10% there wasn't a strong alcohol burn. That said, this is basically a sipper. Overall, this is a unique ale and I'm glad to have tried it. I'd like to try it on draught. It's a nice Fall ale.
