Good afternoon to all the NBS followers and thanks to Maria for getting the ball rolling. Not I totally fit the insomniac bill just had always worked different schedule and was usually up about 3:30 am and it's carried over into this no work lifestyle I have managed to adapt to since retirement. I'm still usually up at around 4:00 am but oh well a little quiet time to start the day is nice.
My new beer for this Sunday comes from the Sierra Nevada Snow Pack which I picked up yesterday because I guess it's the only way to get the Coffee Stout.
This beer poured a dark black color with a nice foamy tan head on top. The head disappeared quickly.
The nose of this beer fits it name well as a coffee stout the nose is a nice deep roasted coffee aroma with perhaps some hints of smokiness from the roasted malts. The coffee taste is smooth without the harsh bitterness of some coffee forward beers.
The taste is dark and fairly rich with a wonderful smooth coffee flavor. There seemed to some hints of cocoa in the taste as this beer warmed little in my glass.
The mouth feel is smooth not overly carbonated making for an easy drinking stout.
Overall a nice coffee stout and at 6.2% ABV something you could easily drink a couple of on a cold afternoon of well a nice sunny afternoon like we have here in Central NH today.
I think my only complaint is that it seems to only come in the Snow Pack mixed box and even though the others in the box are all solid beers, I would love to see this packaged on it's own. Hell I'd even buy it in bomber format if it was available.
Cheers to all, it's sunny outside time for a walk .

    Greetings again friends,
We took the hounds for a nice hike earlier, but we were determined to haul huge piles of leaves out of the backyard. Whew! I'm backing off of beer for a spell, but I still want to join in on the great weekly fellowship I enjoy every Sunday.
    Plain and simple today.

    From inside the mist
    looks warm, a soothing
    tissue along these hills.

Here, next to these stones and names of
the dead it is cold: The damp is on my neck, chilling.

I visit the grave of my father
and feel drawn to within what's left of our love, as we knew each other, and I look
towards all of this history, traffic nearby, realizing the past, only to know more
clearly than this pain proves, that he is indeed there beneath my feet.

    I walk cold within
    the mist to repair wreaths
    and uncover stones.

I stood upright a new vase

    I uncovered Robert Brittan's
    root-crossed stone.

I walk away and feel well, behind the glass, now with snow settling
this rich gray a solid white, blank, uncovering this memory for good.

    This is a solid tune.

Good morning (for me) NBS. Weekend trip to visit a friend on the western side of the country. Had a few new beers this week, including Alaskan Smoked Porter (very good) and a couple local brews that were solid, nice drinking beers, Four Peaks Kilt Lifter and Hop Knot.

Got to play 2 rounds of golf, and by the back nine on the 2nd day, started to remember how to swing a club. Short game stayed rusty throughout, but I blame not having my own sticks. Also thought I hadn't lost much power until I recalled I was a bit higher above sea level than back home.

I didn't have a new beer for today, as I planned poorly and drank yesterday the Yorkshire Stingo I grabbed. The bright side of the tragic loss of 4 FBS yesterday luckily prompted a morning beer run and I found this:

Pike XXXXX Stout: A few posts here on BA brought this beer to my attention. This beer does seem to be a straightforward take on a stout. Powerful roasted notes throughout the taste, although I was quite surprised I didn't get much in the nose. I get dark bread/toast and coffee more so than chocolate some reviews noted. What I would call woody notes in the back, but could be unsweetened cocoa (whatever that is). Actually quite bitter in the back.

Obligatory vacation pic. The guy we played with yesterday hiked this before his round. I'm to old and smart (read lazy/out of shape) to try that two-for:

    Cheers!

I've got new beer on hand today in the form of Almanac's Paris of the West, a quadruple-style ale featuring flame raisins, candi sugar, and oranges - coming in at beer #995... :grimacing:
Sweet candied fruits on the nose, revealed in more detail on the tongue. The sweet orange and dark raisin are most apparent, with something akin to treacle sweetening the pot. Medium-feel, slickly smooth, very little palpable carbonation; a little sticky, very sweet. A decent beer, but not quite on-point for a quad... maybe a little too thin in the body?
Cheers, NBS - hope yer new beers and football teams are good to ya! :grinning:

Good afternoon NBS and thanks as always to Maria for our start today.
Our seasonal leave battle is nearly complete, on this break from raking I opened
Crooked Stave Hop Savant NZ Pacifica. A tropical delight for sure. The effective use of Brett adds
    a wonderful tartness.
    Hop Savant- NZ Pacifica

Poured from a bottle marked July 2015, into the modified tulip glass.
A - Candied lemon in color, a straggling random rise of carbonation gently feeds a thin cap.
Lacing is delicate and sporadic through the experience.
S - Melon rime, fresh picked peach, Brett, dried pineapple. A tropical cornucopia. With a rise in
temperature the funky parts of the Brett charge forward, wet hay, warm leather.
T - The malt base is hidden behind all that Pacifica, The flavors are so tropical that the Brett has its
work cut out for it. The orange and pineapple are forward, lemon skin and beautiful use of the Brett
    show true craft skill.
M - A bit oily, palate is fully coated, the carbonation is gentle, and takes time to clean up.A fruity linger
    and tartness are welcome interlopers.
O - This offering is delightfully fruit forward, the tartness contribution from the Brett is so delicate and in balance. The body is such, reminds me of a young Sauternes.
    Worth seeking out

    Cheers all

Sorry folks, been away from NBS for quite a long time, I started a new job a while back, and life sometimes gets in the way. Lots of things going on in my life right now, some good, some not so good. Good beer has been the one constant, but life goes on and we keep slugging away for better or for worse!

Today's new beer is Oskar Blues Hotbox Coffee Porter - damn tasty stuff! Perfect day to sit on the deck and enjoy this beautiful fall day...

Poured a deep deep redish brown color with a fluffy tan half inch head. Very good retention and lacing. The smell had nice dark chocolate aroma upon the first sniff, then coffee and some sweet caramel like hints. The taste had much more coffee, with just a slight hint of the chocolate. The mouthfeel was medium to light, pretty close to style guidelines, with a pretty dry finish and nice carbonation. Overall, what a great Sunday morning coffee replacement!

Number 2 is from Iowa brewery, Exile. A faded pink color with a 1 finger dirty white head. No real collar or lacing on the glass. Aromas of faint raspberry juice. Flavor is similar to the nose with some tart raspberry juice. Light and refreshing feel. A very simple tart beer that would be easy to drink in the summer.

While this may have been more appropriate as a Halloween beer I walked past it last weekend and should have this weekend as well.

Color is good but aroma and taste could have benefited from some meat on those bones. Surprisingly weak-kneed for them although it could be said that the alcohol is well hidden. Also mouthfeel was a bit off-putting. The high viscosity did not enhance the finish.

Next up is Legacy IPA from Saranac

Nice foamy white head atop an otherwise ordinary looking clear yellow beer, nestled beneath a slightly cocky lacing. We'll see if it stands up as effectively for very long.

Nose is screaming Pilsner with an undeniable noble hop aroma. Only other fragrance is almost of adjunct-ish corn

Taste immediately cuts to that corny thing before an olive flavored bitter pushes through. Further "swigging" allows a hint of something slightly fruity.

Tongue is battered about pretty well with bitterness despite an otherwise watery beer.

I had the privilege of visiting Pike when in Seattle. Awesome beer in general. I got to do a mini-vertical of their American barleywine. First time my father ever did such a thing, felt pretty awesome introducing him to the concept, and such a good beer. Love the 5X.

Good afternoon BA's! Cheers to a new delicious brew for NBS! Backwoods Bastard by Founders
Look - pours almost black with little to no head or lacing. Held up to a light the body is red.
    Smell - sweet malty whisky
Taste - malty sweetness upfront. There's a delicious Scotch aftertaste. The more I drink the stronger the bourbon taste. So good.
Feel - really smooth. Little carbonation.
Overall - this is my first wee heavy. It's awesome. Not overly boozie, especially with being 11.6% alcohol.

L-A beautiful clear straw. The pour is aggressive and leads to a full 2 inch white fluffy head.
    S-a light bready malt presence.
T-Light crisp and clean malts with hints of sulfur. True to style it is crisp, clean, and well balanced.
F- the mouthfeel is light with modest carbonation.
O-an excellent example of one of my favorite styles. The kind of beer you could drink all day cheering on your favorite sports teams, which I am.

Greetings, Autumnal alt drinkers and Fall Faro sippers, it's time for a truly special treat, my first (and likely only) TRIPLE beer review... which includes a tripel. It's a glorious 52 up here in the hinterlands of Nuh-when-jah. (Seriously, that has to be a thing now). Like last week, the reviews will be done through my Wordpress blog, sites posted below...

    Red

    White

Chimay "Blue" forthcoming by the end of the day. Wish me luck, it's a lot of beer to consume... I feel both disappointed and fortunate I bought 11.2 oz and not bombers. Whew, wouldn't that be a chore?

Well, I did manage to squeeze in one new beer today before heading off to work. It wasn't what I would call light, but it's impact will be minimal as it turned out to be a drain pour.:grimacing:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/19868/127007/?ba=woemad

A Scottish ale from a brewery in the lower Yakima Valley, this turned out to be an accidental sour ale, with a big, heavy sour apple and diacetyl flavor and leaden mouthfeel. I previously included a different beer (one that I hadn't tried myself - I meant to, but like a bird seeing something shiny, I got distracted and bought something else at the time) from this same brewery in a box of beer to @beertunes, and he reported things were similarly undrinkable. I don't know if the bottle was old (date your beers, Whitstran!) or bad to begin with, but I see a pattern emerging where I give their beers a wide berth from this point on.

I seem to be powering through beer today. That's what happens when you watch your crap football team crap it up all masterfully. Next up is Limbo from Longtrail.

The puddle of beer provides witness to an aggressive beige, foamy head that leaves behind sticky lacing on top a murky orange beer.

Nose isn't providing much information just yet as I'm getting a little fruitiness and little else.

Taste follows the fruity and draws in boozy malty while we are at it. Next swig confirms the first but leaves an additional resiny pine behind with a touch of sweetness.

Aftertaste is a touch astringent and sweet.

Halftime on the Carolina game and starting some food up figured I would post up my new beer for the day.

Prairie Flare- A gose brewed with coriander and salt.

A bit late to summer ..not the best style for a 55' rainy day in SC.

L: Pours a hazy dark golden orange color with a finger of head that receded to a small ring around the glass

S: Salty, sweat like smell ...some wheat reminds me a lot of westbrooks gose which is a good thing!

T: Starts off mildly tart some orange and saltiness not like the smell would make you think tho...end with that wheat beer twang....Coriander comes into play as it warms a bit.

F: A nice crispy carbonation which is appreciated with the style

O: A very enjoyable gose ....just missed summer tho
