So i had some BA Imperial Mayan Mocha recently, liked the beer but got absolutely no barrel flavor from it. I would have never guessed it was barrel aged at all if not right on the label. Did anyone else feel this way? If so do you feel the same about the legendary Hipster Brunch or does that show some more barrel flavor?

I feel Hipster shows a small amount of barrel character. You arent going to get a ton of bourbon barrel flavor from these beers because the amount of stuff thrown in them. I have a Hipster in the fridge so can report back in a bit with my refreshed findings. But recently having had a BA Mayan Mocha, I remember the barrel only showing when it hit close to room temp. But there is a noticeable difference between the Non BA and BA offerings.

So its there just not very pronounced.

Does the label say what percentage was barrel aged?

I don't have any left, but I don't remember it specifying how much was barrel aged, I don't think it specified

I remember feeling the way. In fact, I remember telling the owner of my bottle shop that I didn't notice a bit of the barrel flavor and he told that the barrel aged version was "smoother".

It's more muted and integrated. A lot of BA'd beers are really boozy, you won't get that with Odd Side, more complimentary than over powering. With the exception of Scallywagger, it's a rum bomb.

If a small percentage of the beer is BA'ed I have a hard time picking up the barrel notes myself.

I agree with this comment. Neither, the bourbon or maple syrup dominates. JMHO, I find the barrel and the maple syrup enhances the chocolate of the stout more than anything.

I don't really pick up anything from the bacon except I get a slightly greasy mouthfeel from it. I probably wouldn't even notice the bacon if I didn't know it was in there. The coffee is OK. It's not as prominent as what you find in BCBCS. To be honest, I probably wouldn't miss it if Oddside left the coffee out of Hipster.

Hipster is a beer that it is very easy to taste every single flavor in it. That includes everything from the bourbon to the bacon. That aspect might be why I liked it so much.

Definitely try to land a bottle, its not your standard BB Stout.

Also, you might have better luck posting this in the Great Lakes forum since Odd Side is MI distribution only.

I'd much rather see the subtle and complementary approach to barrel use like Odd Side frequently has than just slick as hell booze bombs. I can do a boilermaker on my own; I can't carefully integrate flavors with lab techs and brewers in the apartment.

I find most of their stouts, imperial or not, to be very syrupy-sweet and heavily flavored by the introduced ingredients. That being said, the stouts stand up to whatever barrel aging they endure. Nihilist, the Bourbon-aged El Dankerino was pretty barrel heavy in my opinion, lacking the malts to stand up to the barrel. In my opinion, Morningwood was the best balance between the beer, coffee, and bourbon. With Hipster Brunch, I got no bacon notes, but I did get some smoke and a greasy feel, as I saw echoed in some posts above.

I thought BA Mayan Mocha was fantastic, the barrel really complements the ingredients of the beer without being excessive or boozy. I have a bottle of Hipster in my fridge I need to drink this weekend, I hope it's anywhere near as good as the Mayan Mocha.

At the risk of posting in the wrong forum, how difficult is it to get your hands on/trade for something like Morningwood or Hipster Brunch Stout from Oddside?

It doesn't seem like they would because of all the additives, but I've tried BB Imperial Mayan Mocha & Hipster Brunch '14 vs. '15, and I've liked the '14 better in both cases. The flavors seemed more in harmony. The '14 Morningwood I had a few weeks ago was great too. So for my tastes, they age pretty well.

I enjoyed Mokka Munt a lot but got very little barrel character. Anyone know how long they let their beers sit for in the barrel before blending/ bottling?

I remember reading that 2014 Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Mayan Mocha sat in barrels for 8 months. I'm not sure if that's how long they all sit though... I'm also pretty sure that they are all 100% barrel aged.
