Good afternoon all NBS faithful and once again Hello to all the first timers. Thanks too Maria for getting us off to a great start and well what can I say about @kemoarps that is one fantastic review. What can I say about this crazy weather here in NH it's 50* and sunny right now with more grass than snow on my lawn. Yesterday was my S.O.'s birthday so we made a trip to Ogunquit ME for brunch at Bentliffs. Always a great brunch. After a few stops we made our way to Newmarket NH and stopped at Deciduous Brewing. Not my first trip there and as always lots of great beers. So that brings me to my new beer for today which is Phenotype listed as an APA but tagged at the brewery as there take on an IPA. Which ever they want to call it a beer worth trying.

I had a sample of Phenotype at the brewery. It was enough for me to fill one of my growlers with it to bring home. It poured a slightly hazy yellowish to light orange color into my tulip glass. The nose is fruity with hints of an earthy overtone, perhaps a slight malt nose. The taste is a wonderful blend of tropical fruits with a nice bitterness in the finish. A little pine lingers in the back of the mouth. The mouth feel is smooth. I am hoping this becomes a regular beer for them as it will surely keep me coming back.

Such a nice day here I have the smoker fired up and have a bunch of bacon wrapped chicken bites smoking that should be done in a couple of hours. As we are headed to a house warming party at some friends tonight and I'm supplying the app's for the party.

New American Saison (???) Sunday (week 571)
Greetings fellow NBSers form on the ridge in Mid Hud Val NY. Beautiful spring day here. Once upon a time I dreamed I would have a chance, during the winter slow period at the recycle center, to read a bunch of books in between the few customers that brave the weather. No slow period this winter, today was like spring cleaning. Pulled an easy 300 pounds of recycling from waste into recycle, and we received in at least 20 yards each of steel, cardboard, paper, glass and plastic. Thanks neighbors, and to all others who take moments to care for our Mother, thank you too! Do want to catch up on this reading though.

Celebrating getting a copy of the master of the first album of the music project for which I write lyrics, but this beer isn't doing it. It is nothing with which to celebrate. Not a great saison, in fact almost not saisonish (whatever that means haha). It does have a bit of chestnut to it, just enough to ruin a taste that wasn't very good without it. Gak haven't given a -14 rdev in a while, I usually rate a touch high. Soooooo glad I have a buncha other new beers, ain't bringing no knife to this gunfight today.

Hope you have a better Great American Beer in your glass! Cheers!

Hey NBS crowd! I figured I'd pop by since I had something new to try today. Though not something special and, honestly, not something I'm a fan of. They can't all be winners I suppose. I'm still a n00b, especially to the NBS thread, and this is the first time I've posted a not so favorable review so hopefully someone lets me know if I'm doing it wrong. Cheers!

Pours bright red, crystal clear, into an IPA glass. Thin foamy head forms and recedes almost immediately to a ring. Almost no lacing to speak of but there his just a hint. The color and clarity truly is pretty.

Nose is light, malt. Comes off like an IPA well past its prime. Can says "Enjoy by 6/15/2016" so I'm thinking this isn't anywhere near old. Still not getting much of anything past "malt".

Flavor is okay - very much comes off like a typical over malted IPA. There is definite hop bitterness but no discernible hop profile. It's bitter, but no floral/dank/citrus/tropical notes at all. This just about as bland as it comes but it is not bad per se. It is certainly better than the nose would have indicated. The malt here is fine. But when it's more or less supposed to be the star I feel it's a let down - it looks like it was crafted for its appearance more than its flavor profile. It's a malt bomb, but I'm not getting roasty/spicey notes at all. Still, it isn't cloying like it could be, but it's not jammy or fruity like the name here would indicate.

Feel is fine. It's actually really nicely rounded. No rough edges, no lingering off notes on the finish. It does have a decent body and a really nice mouthfeel, especially for a red. This isn't exactly my favorite style to begin with. I have had worse, but it's not something I plan to seek out again.

Happy Sunday BA! I was poking around my cellar for something new for the thread and settled on Crooked Stave Origins. I got this beer back in 2014 and hadn't gotten around to it until today. It didn't end up being my cup of tea, and I passed up a HF Everett I've been meaning to drink, but since are the sacrifices we make for NBS.

    Crooked Stave Origins
Batch 4, 11/2014, consumed 1/31/16. Aged room temp, consumed 50F

    Overall: 3.69

A: dark brown, opaque red highlights, wispy khaki colored head that quickly dissipates.
S: muted at first, may have been a little cold. Once it warmed I get a lot of of tart dark fruit- red apple and cherry skins, sour plum, malt, caramel, wood
T: Tart upfront, then balanced by some sweet malt. Sour dark fruit continues with red apple, sour cherry, slight fig notes. The flavor was a little muddy when cold, but felt more integrated as it warmed up. Some wood and caramel notes in the finish.
M: Medium, a little carbonation at first but flat by the end of the glass
O: Decent flanders style / sour brown ale but nothing special. I wish the tart fruit flavors were brighter, but this may be related to aging. Compared to some of the my favorite beers in this style (La Folie, Rodenbach grand cru) the flavor was a little muddy and lacked barrel character.

Happy Sunday, all! Something put me in the mood for some rich malty beers lately, so I grabbed a bunch yesterday. Last night I had great experiences with Harvey's Christmas Ale and Belhaven 90 Shilling. Let's hope today's brew makes it three in a row.

This selection was inspired by a couple of recent threads- the Highly Regarded Classics You've Yet to Try one as well as @zid 's December of Barleywines.
Bell's Third Coast Old Ale. I can't believe it took me so long to grab this one; Bell's has been in the area for going on 2 years already, I suppose.

Anyway- the aroma is flat out perfect for the style. Rich toffee/nutty malts, given a light airiness from the perfect (there's that word again ) amount and type of hops- gently floral and spicy, with a touch of citrus peel. A flourish of cocoa powder gives it just enough bottom. God, I'm loving every second of smelling this beer- I'm almost hesitant to put lips to it. But trudge on, I must...

First sip: that's how it's done! Sweet and decadent, with enough of a noticeably bitter hop kick to keep any thoughts of cloying at bay. The cocoa comes on bigger this time around, balanced with the toffee and nuts, leading to a very long dry and almost woody finish. Not as 'perfect' as the aroma (the bitterness seems to increase as I proceed further into the glass, so I'd love to see that toned down a notch), but damn close! I'm freakin' loving this beer, even more than the two other beers I had last night. If Harvey's was a Home Run, this is a Grand Slam. A+ (4.75) I'm very glad I bought two, but should have bought four :sunglasses:.

Pours a golden straw color with a two finger head that provides minimal lacing until the bottom of the glass. The aroma has hints of coconut and tropical flowers. Flavors of sweet citrus and stone fruit that evolves into a banana finish.

Had to run out and grab some steaks to toss on the grill later since we are having some nice weather today. Not long ago we were trapped in the house because of snow and today it is 70 degrees and I am busting out the grill. Gotta love NC weather. The warm weather made me bust out this SN Beer Camp Tropical IPA today. I only bought 1 bottle because of the mixed reviews on it. I am glad I only got one. While it is a good beer it just doesn't hit for me and I would have had 11 more beers to drink before moving on to something else. Enough rambling. Here is what everyone comes to NBS for.

Here is my quick review of this beer.

    3.76/5 rDev -4.1%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.5

Pours a light orange gold with a nice white head that lasts in a single layer and leaves ample lacing. Smells dank and citrusy with a hint of sweetness from the malts. It tastes less sweet than it smells and is mainly hoppy with less citrus than the nose led me to believe. It has nice carbonation and a medium mouthfeel. Not quite as tropical as advertised but still a nice beer.

Back with my first official new beer of this Sunday. It's a gose from that venerable brewery from northern California often known by it's initials, SN:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/140/187317/?ba=woemad

I liked it, but I still don't know if I've had anything near a traditional Gose. It seemed almost like a light, dry, salty spin on a Belgian saison. Certainly I found it preferable to "The shimmy..." or whatever it was called from Anderson Valley (the only other Gose I've ever had). I really don't know what the prickly pear brought to the taste as I've never otherwise had it, in or out of beer.

I'll be back later with a Black IPA/CDA from a local brewery, and possibly something else, as I've a fridge full of things that need drinking.
