There's probably been threads about this before but I couldn't find any...

Do any of you guys order beer online? I'm looking into it and can't really decide if it's worth it (shipping costs are insane) to get a couple things I'd like to try that are hard to find in my area. I'm also worried about freshness, the quality of packaging, etc. Are there any sites in particular you would recommend? Keep in mind also I'm in Pennsylvania, which has some backwards alcohol laws and a lot of sites don't even ship here...

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but the reason many don't ship to PA is because its not clear who can get busted for illegal possession of untaxed alcohol, them or you. Many of those who do ship figure it will be you.

BTW PA is not the only state with such laws in place so there's more than 1 other where the stores and clubs won't ship.

France 44 and Lyndale Liquors both great shops in Minneapolis ship with fresh brew and great distro but looking at the policy it states absolutely no shipments to PA

I like using Total Wine and More for their order online but pickup in store feature. GA doesnt allow beer shipping to us so its not quite the same but its also nice to search from home then order and pickup at my convenience.

OP, you might be better off posting in the Mid-Atlantic forum so PA folks can see this more readily. There are tons of online sites but if PA has goofy laws then other PA folks will likely know which sites to use. Also, amending the title to 'Ordering Beer Online for PA residents' might be good too. Good luck.

Maybe twice a year from France 44. But your in a no ship to state, so you either have to trade or do without.

used to love halftime beverage since for a while they didn't give a crap for years to ship to PA. Then I guess it caught up with them and they took it down.

Very unlikely any site would do the same since they could possibly face the tax on the beer shipped. Better off trading to someone who can't get PA beers so easily.

Side note where did you find Stone coffee milk stout? Been looking forever to try that one!

I was afraid trading would be my only option...I've been holding off on trading until I can amass some more impressive, trade worthy stuff. I guess my best option to get started is to just load up on local beers that there's a demand for and build up my cellar over time.

The Weis over here in West York! Their beer cafe is actually pretty good, I always see a couple six packs of the coffee milk stout there.

OK that is hella far away I am from Pittsburgh... Never even heard of Weis!

As for "Impressive worthy stuff" you really don't have to impress some generous BA's might trade easy to find locals there for what we got here. Especially since Sunday Morning stout is coming out in a couple weeks!

I've always used West Lakeview Liquors, and never had any issues whatsoever. Great customer support, too, should you need to contact them for any reason. Not sure on their state-to-state shipping policy, though.

I use two websites, the only thing is that many people don't buy beer online due to the shipping costs. These two stores ship to PA

craftshack.com - sign up for the newsletter, follow them on twitter and instagram because they have rare bottles in stock and
they go quick. So far I have ordered Goose Island BCBS 2015 and Barleywine 2015,
Russian River Damnation and Pliny the Elder, and a few other bottles to add to my cellar

craftbeertemple.com - they are a Chicago based so they have Three Floyds and Pipeworks and bunch of other great brews!

Again each store has great selections and hard to get beers that PA doesn't get, the only downside is paying for shipping.
The PA alcohol laws are stupid

In the Philadelphia area, you can buy those off the shelf, except Pliny the Elder, which is available on draft. It's not that hard to find a bar pouring Pliny the Elder either, and if freshness is a concern, then typically draft > bottle.

I am a long-time critic of PA weirdly restrictive beer laws, but the laws are not at limiting our selection of available beer.

I don't know where you live, but if it's anywhere near Philly I would recommend exhausting what's available in this state first, because there's a lot. In fact, Pennsylvania has more variety of beer distributed to it than any other state in the nation. There are more heavy-hitting breweries sitting on shelves and taps than I can keep up with.

As a former beer trader, IMHO the grass is not greener across the PA state line, but I understand most people need to explore and come to that realization on their own.

Another site is Tavour. They're really good about sending emails and keeping you updated about the latest stock. However, I haven't ordered from them yet. They're based out of Seattle and currently ship to WA, OR, AZ, CA, CO, NM and OH.

To be fair, some people would rather have the convenience of ordering online and having it shipped to their door rather than drive around a huge state looking for things.

they also do not work anything like a regular beer web store. you need to sign up, get this fancy dashboard, and the only way to select beers is to respond to their emails with how many bottles you want and after a month they ship everything you've replied to.

    ......wutm8?

It's a different kind of system. That being said I'll sign up. Maybe won't ever buy, but still interesting.
