Befuddlement from the Bruery. Bottled in 2014. Not a new beer, but new for me! Grabbed one of these in an archive sale a few months ago. Smell poured out when I cracked this one. Sour, citrus, boysenberries, sweet, acidic, funky, amazing. Taste is incredible. Still lots of fruit, and a bit bitter on the tail end. Sour and funky up front. boysenberries, black currant, blueberries, and a bit of grapefruit peel coming through. Really stellar, but I can't say how this compares to the fresh version since I wasn't able to get one when it came out.

I have not had an opportunity to read any of this thread yet, but I am looking forward to reading what everyone is drinking. I am drinking a beer that I have seen numerous times, but I have never bought until the other day. I am excited to finally try it.

Look: Perfect, yellow, clear nice long lasting fluffy head with lacing. Especially impressive considering the ABV of this beer.
Smell: Clovey/peppery yeasty spice aroma, slightly bready, clove flavor lingers
Taste: Cloves and spice, with a touch of vanilla, sweet, very mild hint of alcohol, a touch of Apple
Feel: Beer coats the mouth after each sip, thick, a sipper for sure
Overall: A nice beer. It's not delirium tremens good, but it's solid especially at 11.99 a sixer.

I have been aging these for a few years. I just did a 4 year vertical. I did not like it with three years of age on it. I would recommend drinking most of them before then. I am not sure but I think my favorite was the fresh one. also it's interesting to note, the other years wer 90 IBUs. Cheers, that is a great beer

Greetings, NBSers, and welcome to a tropical submission from Modern Times and your avid acolyte, ovaltine.

Modern Times is a brewer I discovered at CraftCity.com. I went to Craft City searching for Prairie Bomb and, 6 months or so later, I've probably ordered from them a dozen times. Great service and some really great beers from brewers I typically don't have access to in Minnesota, like Modern Times. Full disclosure - the fact I can order beer online is negatively impacting the ovaltine family fortune.

This is the 4th beer I've had from Modern Times, and they've all been very good - or better (Mega Fortunate Islands is my favorite, and it's world-class, IMHO). This offering pours a gorgeous golden straw color, with just a bit of haze, and 1+ fingers of white head. The first whiff is MEGA hops - citrus, passion fruit, just a dank plethora of hoppy goodness. The first sip yields those flavors, plus a bit of the "oniony" flavor Citra hops impart at times. I'm not sure if that flavor is coming from the Citra, or the J-17 hops from South Africa (referred to on the bomber as "elusive"), but it apparent from the first sip of this beer to the last.

Overall, I really enjoyed this (SHOCKER!!! I know), but it may be better suited to sipping in the summer after you mow your grass than sipping in the winter after you shovel some snow. Rated 4.08 here:

After yesterdays spring like weather, today's colder temperatures were disappointing. Aww hell, it's still winter.
I had to accomplish the work around the house first, mostly changing light fixtures, before I could drink. Electricity+heights+drinking don't mix well.

    Pint can into a tulip.
Pours a muddled red/brown with a small head. Slight lacing as I drank.
Big hits of lemon, grass, floral and grapefruit on the nose. Lots of citrus characteristics, pine and grassiness, subtle spiciness from the rye. I found the mouthfeel needed some boost but overall it was drinkable.

    Greetings from the Great Northwest:

Today we are lightening up a bit with a red ale from Oregon. Phobos Single Hop Red Ale is a nice brew for late winter, and another solid offering from Ecliptic Brewing.
    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/33058/182425/

I have had several Ecliptic brews lately and all are very good.

Cloudy but mild here today. No precip and temps in the mid 40's. Now that football season is gone I have been busy pruning trees around the place. It's a lot easier to prune before they leaf out in the spring.

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!

I too just had this Breakfast Gem today courtesy of his Benevolence The New Jersey Beer Czar @SammyJaxxxx . Such a wonderful cream ale with a fine, gentle coffee roast. It was the best thing I had for breakfast until...I took a deep sniff, and a savoring sip of Carton's Imperial Cream Ale w/Real Coffee. (also from a beautiful box from said NJ benefactor). This one is truly glorious. I was dumbfounded by the creaminess and the spot on flavor as described on the can. SammyJaxxxx has turned me on to some solid Carton offerings in the past, but holy shizzle this one is stunningly tasty.

How about the exploding beer in the freezer?
How about "cellar shelves" (actually cabinets) that start to sag in the middle?

Good evening folks, still feeling my way around here and thought I'd chime in with a new (for me) beer. My kids got me a mixed bag of beers as a gift and this was included.[IMG]
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Received this as part of a Christmas gift pack. Bottled on 8/20/2015. I didn't check the best by date (12/18/2015) until this evening, my bad, so it's 2 months past. Live and learn. Still...this was kept in my cellar, shelved in the dark at about 54 degrees, transferred to fridge for approximately 2 weeks at 38 degrees. Poured from bottle to shaker pint glass
Look: Mostly clear, light haze, yellow/orange gold color, 1/4 inch head with some lace, nice carbonation which lasted to the end.
Smell: Floral and sweet pushed by a yeast backbone.
Taste: Mild bitterness buffered by sweet malt and yeast. Hint of pine, bread and orange peel(?). Lingering aftertaste of stale chewing gum but not at all unpleasant.
    Feel: Slightly creamy and effervescent.
Overall: Complex flavoring features the best of west coast IPA with solid Belgian roots. Very drinkable but the 6.9%ABV sits in the background which could spell trouble if you let consumption get out of hand. A nice beer to come home to after work and before dinner. I wish I had tried this before the best by date had passed, curious to know how much difference there is. Will keep this on my list for when friends are expected to visit but I'll buy and serve fresh from now on.

Tropical Bitch - Flying Dog Brewery

Flying Dog Brewery - Tropical Bitch Belgian Style IPA
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

    ------------------------------------------

Poured from the bottle into a Flying Dog tulip/goblet like glass.

Deep orange amber, almost with a pinkish hue interestingly enough and also fairly clear. Head creation is about a finger and a half tall, fine bubbles, smooth top but with a small appearance and small retention. Some staying power as it settles to a bowled top with a light tan color.

Well that's definitely a fruit aroma, high on tropical Kool aid and notes of coconut interestingly. Not really much Belgian sensing quality going on here as this fruit like aroma is quite dominant, slightly sugary, but also a bit artificial sensing as well. Life could be worse that's for sure, but otherwise not that bad.

On first sip, the brews aroma does not give any hint of what it tastes like at all. Deep toasty malt bill, hinting of brown bread with a hop forward push. Decent solid mouthfeel, even a bit of playful carbonation and solid malt base that coats evenly. The overall Belgian character is really lacking though in the flavor, but manages a sort of fruited tropical hop note and pine like very astringent bitter and tolerable finish.

It's seemingly an odd take on flavor, and leaving lots of classic Belgian character forgotten, but also has an aggressive hop push that is interesting with a powdered fruit flavor that is kind of fun, if somewhat artificial. Bit out there, but this could be far worse.

NBS beer # 3 is another beer from Frost Beer Works.

    Really Pale Ale

    Frost Beer Works
American Pale Ale (APA) / 5.50% ABV

    3.77/5 rDev -6.9% | Avg: 4.05
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

L- Pours a hazy light yellow with a 2 fingers of foamy white head. The head recedes to a thin film. Lacing is thick and lasting.
S- Hoppy citrus overlaying some light biscuity malts.
T- Much the same as the nose. Citrus hops with some very light malt presence almost a session IPA.
F- Carbonation is prickly. Mouthfeel is medium and the finish is dry.
O- Nothing earth shattering. This beer is closer to a session IPA than an Pale ale. It's OK. Not my favorite offering from these guys. I prefer their Just Pale Ale.

#2, this scintillating offering from Rogue.

So Rogue truly intrigues me. They have some beers I absolutely love (Dead Guy Ale, Chocolate Stout, Double Chocolate Stout, Santa's Reserve, Yellow Snow, etc.), and they have some beers that terrify me (the beard beer thing - I can feel the bile rising in my throat as I type that). Okay, that's the only beer that terrifies me, but still.

Anywho, I've never tried this, which is ..... curious, because it's been around forever. So when my local had this, I snatched it up, and I'm so glad I did. If you had looked up "Oatmeal Stout" in the dictionary, a picture of this beer should appear, IMHO.

On the pour, it's jet black, with some auburn tones leaking in around the edges. A finger of tan head tops it, and then the aroma. Holy cats - chocolate, toffee, dark fruit (I get TONS of cherries), just a feast of stouty greatness. The first sip yields the same tastes as the aromas, plus a creaminess that makes this dangerous - way too drinkable. I love the chocolate flavors, and I absolutely LOVE the dark cherry flavors.

Rated 4.46 here, I can't recommend this beer highly enough:

    New Beer Sunday: American Stout.

Evenin’ NBSers with Special Salutations to all you Stalwart Seekers of Suitably Superior Stouts who are Survivors of Surfeit and Satiation with Super Strong Stouts (phew!).

This has been a good weekend for new beers. Yesterday we made the longish drive to Victory’s new Parkesburg brewery and brewpub to meet up for lunch with some friends and their daughter. We hadn’t been able to just chat and hang out with these folks in quite a while so a good time was had by all. While at the Brewpub I made it a point to sample two new beers, one was Victory's current Braumeister Pils Kellerbier (which I enjoyed a lot but didn’t review since it turned out to be both a delicious beer and perfect for enjoying with good conversation and food.

Towards the end of the long lunch and conversation I was also able to have a glass of the Ten Years Alt, take a few notes and discuss the beer with my friend since by that time the women were discussing child raising (and everybody knows men have little to contribute to that type discussion.) This Alt beer was first brewed for Victory's 10th Anniversary and not since. They decided to offer it again for their 20th Anniversary. But you have go to the brewery brewpub to have a glass. If you do happen to live within reasonable distance I'd urge you give this one a try before it disappears for another 10 years

Finally I got to finish off the evening at home with a can of the Neshaminy Creek Highwater Hefeweizen which was OK but not outstanding in my view.

The weather here has been unseasonably good, with sunshine and temperatures in the upper 50s to 60 yesterday, and in the mid to upper 50s today but a good bit more cloudiness leading into the rain showers moving through here tonight.

This evening’s new beer is a 6.5% ABV American Stout, The Commodore from Ballast Point.

As usual my review is in progress until the beer is finished but can be found here:

    http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/199/138387/?ba=drtth

This is a reasonably good stout that has many of the right flavors and aromas, but I'm also picking up a bit more burnt character than I prefer. If I were to buy a case of American Stout it would more likely be the Obsidian from Deschutes. If I couldn't find that I might just switch styles and go with the English Stout from Yards, the Love Stout.

No music on the player tonight since there is a Disney 60th Anniversary program on the TV that others are watching/listening to.

    Cheers, all!

You definitely got one of their better and well-put-together offerings. The brewery tends to be more interested in producing the next big or crazy beer than honing in some of their existing offerings. At only two years old, I think they have some maturing to do. I think they have enough of a following that some of their beers feel rushed. They also are increasing their internal capacity with some new equipment this year, which may help.

That said, most of their beers are decent enough. It's just sometimes they aren't up to par, as you say, based on their descriptions. I agree with you this one was, at least.

Nice, I love it!! Nice to see the combination worked out, also.

A little late response, but... although encouraged, a picture isn't necessary. But a nice description of your impression of the beer is "necessary", and even a little about your week if you feel so inclined .

Red Lodge Ales Busted Barrel chocolate stout with special thanks to @JayWhitson for providing it!!

A-Dark body with a light and bubbly head being about a finger length
S-Chocolate is the front-runner along with some roasted malts and some bourbon barrel
T-Completely follows the nose with a light-medium body. The carbonation keeps it light and non cloying but also a little lacking for me

Good evening NBS community. My 2nd and last beer for today happens to be new to me.

Even More Jesus Imperial Stout 12% ABV
    Evil Twin Brewing

Pours almost oil black with a thin tan head. Roasted malt is the dominant scent with coffee, chocolate and tobacco. First sip, a wonderful roast splash with again coffee, chocolate, some sweet fruit, maybe raising or fig. Couldn't find a bottling date, but quite smooth as the ABV is well hidden and a good overall balance for a solid bitter finish. I would say this is quite big and delicious. I am sure everybody who's had one of these know that it's pricey, but even so, I can see myself purchasing more for a special occasion. Cheers!
