Thanks, it feels like NBS is the next step (so to speak) after WBAYDN. Like graduating, but I will still enjoy the latter every other evening. Cheers!

I'd have to assume that if Weyerbacher is getting into the Pilsner game in that neck of the woods they'd have to bring their A game. Glad to hear its worth checking out!

Greetings All from the Great Northwest.

And a wonderful Memorial Day weekend to all. I am so grateful for this country and our freedoms. Even the freedom to have a couple of lunatics running for President if that is what we as a nation choose.

And John Wayne's Birthday last Thursday, can't forget that.

Today (appropriately) we have Red Hook American Pale.

Not a great APA but it works for the occasion, in my stars and stripes pint glass from a brew fest a few years back.

Sunny here in the Columbia Basin, but breezy wiht temps in the low 70's.

Both the brew kettle and the smoker are going today. Meat in a couple of hours, beer in a couple of months.

    Until next time,

    Happy Trails!

After spending most of the day working in the yard, it's time to settle in with a new beer. I stopped by the bottle shop earlier with intentions on picking up a new Old Black Bear DIPA but the keg blew during the fill so I went with Cahaba Brewing's Fraximus Maximus. Not a totally new beer to me but one I had not taken the time to review.

Gorgeous clear golden orange and showcasing a nice blend of grapefruit and honey on both flavor and aroma. All in all a solid DIPA.

I too like hoppy wheat ales, esp. in the summer.
You have a list of favorites? They are not that easy to find - at least around here.

Welcome, @skleice - nice to have you!
@cavedave, curious if you've tried Westbrook's IPA - since they've skipped DC area for NY - and how you would compare them.

Welcome, my friend! Hope you contribute your tasting thoughts to more NBS, as I enjoy your WBAYDN posts often .

I find Westbrook delicious, it is such a pleasure to have both available. Westbrook is a sharper tart, and less salty, really bright and clean blast of flavor, and Lost Nation has just a tiny touch of funk to it, and a more refreshing mouthfeel that I love.

At the risk of stepping on Dave's toes, I've had them both as well. I'd say that Westbrook's is intense, but ultimately a straightforward salty sour bomb. Lost Nation's does not exactly lack in the salt/tart department, but it also shows a fantastic doughy malt character underneath with just enough spicy complexity to keep it interesting after a few cans.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, NBSers. Your humble supplicant ovaltine has a couple of offerings for your perusal. First up, this scintillating APA from Odd Side Ales.

This is my first venture to the Odd Side of things (quiet in the peanut gallery!), and I wish I had the opportunity to make this trip earlier. I received this in a trade with a buddy for some Pseudo Sue (another Citra-hopped APA), so it's like Citra universes are colliding.

It pours a brilliant golden orange, semi-translucent (I think every beer I've presented on NBS I've described as "semi-translucent" - sue me ), with 2 fingers of white-ish head. The aroma is tropical passion fruit, and the flavor is SOOOOOOOOO Citra hoppy goodness. Great summer beer, IMHO.

Rated 4.18. Plus, I had to toss in this pic of the sunset last night. It was pretty awesome.

I will admit that I had 3 growlers, two to take home to friends, of Lost Nation Gose with me after visiting my son and camping overnight outside Waterbury and that the weather turned warm and days beautiful and I finished all 3 of them in a day and a half, couldn't help myself. Drinkability is off the charts. LN def. has more malt character, which makes it amazing that it can be so refreshing, never hits me as doughy though. I think the salt shows up more in LN when not competing with that sharpness like it does with the Westbrook, I don't think either is actually too salty, to me they both have the right amount.

New Berliner Weiss (with apricot) Sunday
    Greetings NBSer's,
And thanks for the start @cavedave.
Finally getting a break from the several days of rain with a mostly sunny, slightly humid and certainly an early summer feel overall. Kids and 1 grandkid over to celebrate b-day of my youngest.
Found a good beer for the start of summer and NBS. Schell's series of Berliner Weiss has been a really fun adventure (and it is going to continue as they have a whole dedicated building for this project).
This one is of the best. I love the way the apricot works with the tartness of the base beer. Refreshing and interesting.

And it being Memorial weekend, here is a toast to those who serve, have served and esp. those who sacrificed their very existence to allow this great country to thrive as no other has. God Bless every one of them.

First time this beer from Castle Island
    Copper color semi cloudy
    A distinct pine/ resin aroma
Slightly bitter to smooth mouth feel
Kind of a citrus peel/ sticky type of finish. If you are into piney and resins this one is for you. I thought it was solid and wouldn't mind have more of this and others from this brewery. I heard Big Ern is a pleasant surprise

Thanks to both responses (and @cavedave for the third). These fall in line with what I expected. Wonder if either of you have tried Old Pro from Union (guessing it'd have to be a trade). What you stated make me still have Lost Nation on my want list.

No problemo. I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've never had Old Pro, but have seen it show up numerous times on WBAYDN, so hopefully it finds its way here one of these days.

I just finished a 4-pack of Off Color Troublesome and came to appreciate their different take as well; it really does favor the yeasty funk and coriander spiciness quite heavily, but is still nicely drinkable in the end. At the moment, that one and Lost Nation seem to exist in a Yin/Tang of the gose style for me, and they also show just how different the approaches can still be in such a tightly knit style.
