    Beer Vacation – Woo-Hoo!

Maria is away on a beer vacation so she graciously asked me to fill in this week.

I know that Maria is a fan of Ithaca Brewing so as a tribute to her (and her beer vacation) I will be drinking Ithaca’s 18th Anniversary Beer which happens to be a Baltic Porter that was aged on Oak. Now if Maria was beer vacationing in Northern Europe this might just be the sort of beer would be drinking.

The Baltic Porters style has a very interesting history. The Porter style originated in England and as part of the English beer industry they exported this style along with Imperial Stouts to various countries that bordered the Baltic Sea (e.g., Scandinavia, Poland, Russia, etc.). The breweries of those countries would then brew these Porter type beers but often with a ‘twist’: they would often use lager yeast strains and the lager brewing process. Ithaca made a decision to brew this beer that way using lager yeast.

Below is a description from the Ithaca Brewing website:

    “BALTIC PORTER

    AGED ON OAK

About this beer: Our Anniversary 18 is a traditional Baltic Porter featuring complex, multi-layered flavors and aromas with American oak taking center stage. Notice notes of caramel, chocolate, dark fruits, toffee, and vanilla with a hint of smokiness in this smooth, full bodied lager. Pop a bottle, and savor this historic style, with deep ruby hues, harkening from the border countries of the Baltic Sea, in front of a roaring fire on a cold winter’s day or pair with hearty food and good conversation.

    ABV: 7%

    IBU’s 25

    Yeast: 100% lager

Malt: Munich, Vienna, Dark Crystal, Special B, Abbey, Chocolate, Debittered Black Malt, Kilned Smoked Cherry Wood malt

    Hops: Lublin

    Extra: American Oak

Color: Almost opaque black, with deep ruby hues”

Well, I do not have a roaring fire going on but I am excited to be drinking this beer.

Served in my Heavy Seas Tulip glass:

    Appearance:

Pours jet black with an long lasting tan head.

    Aroma:

Yum! There is a lot going on here. There is quite a bit of smoke (like a campfire). There is also some aspects of molasses, caramel, and even some chocolate. I also picking up just a tiny hint of dark fruit aroma.

    Taste:

The flavors follows the nose but the level of intensity is less as compared to the aroma. It seems to be a bit more roasty but the flavors of molasses, caramel and chocolate is still noticeable. The smoke is very subdued on the flavor side.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with very smooth & luscious texture.

    Overall:

I really like this beer! There is a lot going on with the complexity of aromas and flavors that come across in layers.

I hope that Maria is enjoying herself on her beer vacation.

Cheers to Ithaca Brewing for brewing a tasty Baltic Porter!!

Hi...good morning. Long time BA, even longer beer lover, but this is my first post on NBS, mainly because my buddy brought this back for me, and if there is one thing you should know about me, it's my love for rye and I lost sleep over my excitement to enjoy this at 8:20 in the morning. But hey, no one judges here, right? So here it goes:

    Bronx Brewery Rye Pale Ale:

A: Muddled copper with a nice rocky off white head.

    A: Pine, peppery spice

T: Good resinous pine, some caramel, and a good dose of rye spice and cracker.

M: Medium to full with a good balance leaning to favor bitterness

O: My first ever from Bronx, and it is right up my alley. Affirms my love or rye even more!

    Cheers!

Good day NBS fans! It's a mostly cloudy cooler and breezy day along the southern shore. I started my day with a sunrise run, a light breakfast and now it's time for a relaxing new beer on the patio with my mutt Payton beside me. Since it's the brunch hour, I'm going to pop the cork and cage on a 2016 500ml Stone Bastard's Midnight Brunch. The abv. is listed at 12.7 percent and I'm serving this in a 10oz. Stone snifter for the Sunday drive.

It pours a cloudy caramel brown leaving a centimeter of rapidly diminishing foam that forms a ring around the glass. There are tiny carbonation bubbles present. The smell is mild char, bourbon, with some sweet caramel and a slight hint of maple that's well hidden. Taste is very oak forward with a touch of char and bourbon, followed by sweet caramel and a hint of maple in the finish. The feel is very slick and creamy smooth with pleasant carbonation stimulating your tongue.

Another 'balanced' barrel aged beer from Stone where the barrel complements the beer rather than ruling it. A nice meld of flavors and a 12.7 percent that's pretty sneaky smooth. I've seen this beer all over the region sitting around, I'm going to pick up one more to cellar. I'm a fan, my score was 4.22 / rDev +1.4%.

I employed the @jzeilinger crash chill method using a CD case because I forgot to put this in the fridge yesterday. It was down to the perfect drinking temperature in 10 minutes! Don't drink this beer too cold, 50 degrees seemed perfect.

A strange weather day here as it started to drizzle and now the sun is out once again. I'm hoping to get the grass cut a little later and of course more reviews. Enjoy your Sunday, here's the scorecard.......

Happy NBS. Summer is (has) already taken its hold of So WI. It sure has been warm and sunny, with just enough rain to keep everything green. Today is in the 70s and I'm going to soak it in before it really heats up next weekend! :grimacing:

Decided to enjoy a Karmeliet and that was a fantastic choice! Golden clear with a brilliant white 2 finger head. Thick cap and nice lacing on my glass. A fruity aroma of pear flesh, apricots, hints of lemon zest and yeast. There is a spiciness of pepper and some clove. Flavor of sweet pear, apple, even white grape. The Belgian yeast, clove, and pepper round it off and make it a full flavored Triple. The feel is creamy and smooth, with a nice dry finish. Overall, this is a very characterful, spicy Belgian Tripel that stands out because it is well made.

I may return later this evening as I promised the kids a trip to the pool. :sunglasses:

    New Gose Beer Sunday

    Greetings NBSer's,
A note of thanks to @JackHorzempa for pinch hitting today. Good start.
June is the one month that it can look like Ireland here. Lots of water and sun and still not too hot leads to lots and lots of green. That's how it is today along with a glorious morning sunshine. Got the lawn mowed and now ready for a lighter beer to start my day. This one courtesy of @ONovoMexicano. Many thanks to him.

I love how the color reflects the bottom of the glass with color.
    Nice looking head too.
Boy this is a good drink. The tart, salt and strawberry are blended very nicely (with the salt the faintest). There is even a little fruity sweetness from the strawberries too. The astringency is lovely and with the salt laying on the tongue keeps me from drinking too quickly and allowing me to enjoy the aftertastes for a good long time.
    One more picture.
I hope you are all able to enjoy a good beer today.
    Best to all.

Good morning/afternoon NBSer's, depending on your coast. My first beer for today is this fairly recent offering from Frost Beer Works.

L-A modest pour leads to a two finger bone white head of bubbles which recede to a thick white film of with a large central island. The beer is a very hazy yellow similar to it's big brother Lush. Lacing is thick and clings to the glass throughout.
S- The nose is strong with mango and pineapple. There is no need to stick your nose in the glass. It can be picked up from afar. The nose stronger on this one than on its big bro.
T-The tropical nose is present on the front of the palate and eventually transitions to a very mild lingering bitterness.
F- The mouthfeel for the beer is on the thinner side of medium. Carbonation seems to be higher than Lush and the brew feels lighter for it.
O- The beer is meant to be a sessionable version of Frost's highly popular Lush. It has much of the hop flavor which I enjoy in Lush while being significantly lower in ABV's and IBU's. It is more balanced than a lot of the session IPA's that I've had. That is a quality I like. Highly Recommended.

S- Pilsner malts, earthy/spicy hops, hints of a grape like fruitiness.

T- Some sweet bread and pilsner malts, spicy German hops, hints of light fruits.

M- Smooth, light to medium body.

O- A nice easy drinking lighter style beer. Perfect for summer, very tasty for 4.25% ABV.

Good morning (or early afternoon!) New BSers! Thanks, Jack, for starting us off today. I'm going to have to check out Ithica Brewing since both you and @utopiajane seem to recommend them. We don't see much of them down here in the wilds of PA - maybe when Mrs. Lizard and I make a run to Connecticut shortly and drive across NY. I have a buddy in the suburbs of Albany that I should stop in and see - been a few decades since we drank together and I attended his first wedding. Anyway, Facebook has reconnected us and it's always good to see that the sense of humor hasn't changed.
Mrs. Lizard should be back any minute from her latest pillage of quilting supplies in SW NY, Dog knows where I'll store her latest lootings! Looks like my new shed is already gone.

    Today's New Beer is:[IMG]

I'm a fanboy of Jester King and find most of their brews are usually good to undrinkable... This brew is pretty darn good:

Undated bottle at 42 degrees into a hand washed and dried JK snifter
Aroma – almost champagne but with a little must; cork has a healthy pop but no foaming
Head large (Maximum five cm, careful pour), white, fizzy/frothy, rapidly diminishing to a three mm ring and thin layer
    Lacing - none
Body very light yellow, stream looks nearly clear, effervescent, sediment in bottom of bottle
Flavor – vinous, with no trace of honey other than a little sweetness; no hops, no malt, no alcohol, no diacetyl
Palate – light, watery, lively carbonation

A very pleasant biere de garde, despite the addition of honey. If this were not a limited release, I would purchase more.

    Appearance 4, Aroma 4, Flavor 4.25, Palate 4, Overall 4. Rating 4.1, Avg 3.86, rDev +6.2%

And there you have it. I'll be heading to TX soon, to Jester King and other breweries, to restock and to pick up brews for the next NBS BIF.

    Prosit!

[IMG] Poured from a 16 oz can not sure when it was canned but from the source @Mcballz13 and the juicy ness of the hops probably less than a month for sure. Pours a very attractive cloudy dark yellow with a fluffy 2 finger sticky white head that leaves behind some patches of lace. 4.25
[IMG] Smell mango, papaya, tangerine, pine, and hints of grapefruit. 4.25

Taste is much of the same, but BIGGER, BOLDER, AND BETTER! Starts out very tropical, before just coats the tongue with resinous pine and grapefruit rind, that hangs on and won't let go sip after juicy sip.[IMG] 4.75

Mouthfeel is a large medium, with plenty of life, a touch dry, and if you like aggressive DIPAS this one is for you! 4.75

Overall this to quote @jzeilinger shah is legit! So much flavor in one can. What I love even more is that it was unexpected, @Mcballz13 even out our previous trade with 2 amazing DIPAS and he just sent it without warning. The other one was Singlecut Softly Spoken Magic Spells. 4.5[IMG]

Good afternoon NBS, Thanks Jack for keeping us going this week,
today I have the pleasure of a Lil' Brett from Allagash, well crafted and quite delicious.
    Cheers all

    Lil' Brett

    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a stem tulip glass at 48 deg F.
A - Nice clarity, low carbonation traces its way through bright yellow backdrop. A band of white ring substitutes for
a cap. With a rise in temperature you can coax a 1/2" cap with some swirling.
S - Pineapple for sure, cheese rind funk, wheat grass, warm field on a summer afternoon, oak ash, floral elements include sunflower, and day lily.
T - Stays in a tight Brett based band, tropical notes from the hopping schedule, some white pepper and light grains from the base beer try to find their way through the Brett.
M - Light in body, super dry through the experience. A bit tart, and monochromatic. The palate response is from the edges. Quick finish with dry lemon zest linger.
O - Just enough to keep it interesting in most areas, the aromatics match the flavors, the body and carbonation align well. Overall a delightful offering

I've already gone through a few 4-packs and will be buying more, although I will readily agree that it's a bit simple (though tasty as hell). Maybe that is working in its favor- that and the price. I do hope this is the start of a new thing (low gravity, brett/hoppy farmhouse beers made for summertime quaffing).

Back again with more Frost Beer Works goodness. This one is a varietal of Lush.

    Lush X2

    Frost Beer Works
    American IPA / 8.00% ABV

    4.52/5 rDev +0.9% | Avg: 4.48
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.75 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.5

    Bottled 05/26/16

L-The beer pours a soft hazy yellow. A moderate pour leads to a fluffy white 3 finger head. Lacing is moderate and trails the beer back to the surface.
S- The beer shines here. This aspect was the weakest on the regular Lush, and the dry-hopping made a real difference here. The mango and citrus hop aromas overflow your glass and can be perceived much further away. Same great smell just amplified.
T- The mango and citrus flavors also seem a little stronger than the base beer. I have no idea if its the variation in some of the hops noted on the bottle, or my perception enhanced by the terrific nose. Whatever the reason it comes off as slightly juicier. Bitterness seems lighter than the original and is lightly perceived in the finish.
F- Mouthfeel on this version seems a little thinner than the original. Carbonation seems to be slightly stronger which leads to a lighter, dryer, finish. This version doesn't coat the tongue quite like the original.
O- There is a huge improvement in the nose with a slight step back in the mouthfeel. Overall I feel this version is a slight improvement on the original. If you are looking for a great citrus forward DIPA with great balance, you should really pick this one up.

Michael, how experienced are you with the various American Wild Ales brewed by Allagash? A number of months ago a local beer bar had one of these beers on draft (I can't recall the brand name) and I requested a sample pour. In that beer the dominant aroma/flavor of that beer was rubber for my palate; an unpleasant beer for me. Needless to say I did not order a full pour of that beer. It had plenty of 'funky' flavor but not the sort of funk that I enjoy.

    Cheers!

    hey what's Going on everybody?!?

    Beer drinking that's what!

Man what a week. I had 10 cubic yards of leaf mulch dumped on my property and I've been trying to get that sucker spread into the yard. Holy cow it's taking some time let me tell you, but it looks great... nearly done.

With that the weather has been a mixed bag. Some things are growing, some things aren't that's how life goes.. but the hop vine I planted early March has done real well, it looks beautiful too.

Big thanks to @woodychandler for some new brews! Had a few already and always love new beer surroundings. Great way to step up to the plate their @cavedave and that 18th sounds great as well, as I remember liking the Ithaca Anniversary beers as well, definitely gonna have to keep that on the radar. I hope beer cation is suiting Maria well, I am already thinking of my next one.

as I have always said... there is no vacation except beercation!!!

With that all fine and settled, I have a new brew. Definitely hitting the Stillwater train of late as I have always dug them so let's see what new Stillwater concotion suits my palate today... Does this deliver?

What's new for our hero today!?

    Stillwater Artisinal Ales - Autumnal
    by imbibehour, on Flickr

Poured from the bottle into a tulip glass.

A real great looker of a brew. Deep chestnut red, looking like a real nice Marzen but with a classic Belgian middle column of carbonation rising through the center of the glass. Frothy and big bubble-bath foam on creation, with a solid easy four finger head, clingy and with moderate retention as it settles with soft foamy peaks and valleys. Great looking brew.

Real nice toasty malts of brown bread, with a mild sensing funk and brett. Chewy sourdough but with a darker grain bready quality that really shines. Slight herbal hop punch as well that comes out nicely, it's like a marzen saison or something, real neat.

Taste brings the goods. Malt bread basket filled with excellent brown bread flavors in the mid palate. Slight clove warmth finish on the phenol action but more brett makes it really linger. Lots of interesting bread angles, dry rye, pumpernickel, banana bread like ester with a good funky mix of farmhouse flavors. Drinks lightly for easy consumption with a supportive neutral mouthfeel that lets the flavors take turns. A mix of green earth and herb hop also pops nicely on the finish with a good farmhouse accent.

Reminds me of a real good solid bretted marzen, the best of both and works nicely. Fun and tasty brew.

    look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4 | BA generated score: 4.19

Hi Jack, I know you weren't addressing me on the question... BUUUHHTT...

I've had a few of the wild ales from Allagash, none of the coolship series though unfortunately, but in my experience they have ranged from solid to spectacular.

Real sorry to hear about the burnt rubber condition on your last experience, can't say I've had that though with the wild ales from them.
