We live in a golden age of Craft beer where brewers are having to get increasingly clever with their names to stand out. This can leave some (if not all) of us out of the loop as to the meaning of a beer name. So I'm making this thread so people you get the reference of a beer name can teach us all a little something.

    To start out with:

Pliney the Elder - Was named for Pliney the Elder. A Roman jack of all trades who made the scientific name for Hops

Swamis (Pizza Port) - Named after the famous surfing beach in San Diego

Anchor Steam - Named after the huge amounts of steam the vats would give off on the roof top of the brewery where they were cooled in the cool San Francisco air

    Teach us something!

Night Shift Brewing - they began homebrewing during the nighttime due to all the brewers having day jobs
Hoof Hearted Brewing - "Who Farted?"
SingleCut Beer Smiths- named after a unibody guitar, most of their beers are guitar or music related
Tree House Julius - as juicy as a Julius Orange
Tree House Green - the mash ton turns bright green when brewing this beer
Trillium Artaic - the ART of the mosAIC hop (but they'll tell you it's a reference to a company named Artaic that creates tile mosaics)

this is a good thread, ready to nerd out.

I always felt like Trilliums are super cryptic. Good stuff.

    I keeping tradition

Green Flash 30th Street - Named after a street in San Diego that has abnormally high concentration of breweries

Lost Abbey - Brews Belgian-Abby style beers so they feel as though they are a "lost" abbey

Dogfish Head Pangaea - Is named after the land mass made of every continent from 300 million years ago since there is an ingredient from every continent

Not everyone agrees with that theory, including two previous owners of Anchor Brewing Co:
Maytag was probably the source of Michael Jackson's World Guide to Beer [1977] comment:
Going back a century, 1901's One Hundred Years of Brewing, actually used the term "steam" for carbonation in its description of tapping a keg of steam beer:
And it is one of theories repeated today by the current Anchor Brewing Co. in this video (the other being the rooftop coolers giving off the heat of the brew).

Mad Mouse Brewing Company in Chicago is named thusly because it was started by such a small group of people (like mice) and they thought they were crazy (or mad) to think it might work out.

Natty Greene's Brewing Company in Greensboro, NC, is named after Nathanael Greene, whom the city is also named after. They named it thusly because they wanted the town to own the brewery as their own.

Gibbs Hundred, also located in Greensboro, NC, is named after a geographical subunit termed a "hundred," in which Thomas Jefferson believed a healthy, educated, and happy community could be fostered, enriched, and improved. The couple that then started the brewing company (with the last name of Gibbs) called their home a hundred because it fostered the ideals they wanted their brewery to promote.

    Really cool thread!

Defiant Brewing in Pearl River named their Muddy Creek Lager after the original name of the property where Pearl River is situated, way back in the 1700s.

A new brewery in PDX is named after a Ken Kesey novel: http://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/41869/ .

Around here, a lot of the breweries are named after various geographic features of the area: Boundary Bay Brewery, named after a body of water on the US/Canada border; Kulshan Brewing, named after one of our local mountains; North Fork Brewery, named for the north fork of the Nooksack river; Skagit River Brewing, for the Skagit river; Elliott Bay breweries, for the bay; Chuckanut Brewing for the Chuckanut Mountains and bay.

I always enjoyed Toppling Goliath's Pompeii and Sosus - both are mosaic hopped beers - so Pompeii is a reference to the famous mosaics of Pompeii:
and Sosus of Pergamon was a famous greek mosaic artist in the 2nd century:

Allagash's Hugh Malone - seems an obvious play on words (humulone, Humulus, etc), but that word play goes back, apparently, to this dude Hugh Malone who is arguably a founding father of home brewing at least in Maine.

Russian River Blind Pig IPA was originally brewed at Vinnie's Blind Pig Brewery in Temecula, CA.

The phrase goes back to Prohibition, when “pig” was the slang term for a mason jar and “blind pig” was an unmarked mason jar. Many legal saloons served bootlegged booze, which was always served in blind pigs. So if you wanted the good stuff, you asked the bartender for a blind pig. Eventually the code name for the saloons themselves became blind pig.

Wow, never heard that one. The term actually pre-dates Prohibition and was used before that for any unlicensed alcoholic beverage dealer or bar, though eventually it was a lower class joint, as opposed to the upper class  "speakeasy". This is the common etymology I've always seen (which, like others, typically combined blind pig with blind tiger).

I have been to hundreds of breweries and talked to countless numbers of beer people, but I can't for the life of me think of a single thing to contribute to this thread. I hope this thread picks up spread because I love this trivial nonsense and maybe someone will jog my memory.

Keegan Old Capital- Kingston, NY was the first capital of NY until it was burned by the British in 1777; the state constitution was actually written here

Keegan Hurricane Kitty: named after the owner's grandma. It was the nickname given to her by police because she was always caught speeding, etc.

Newburgh Brewing company's beers also have a bunch of historical references.

Newburgh Conspiracy: while Continental Army was camped in Newburgh, NY a letter was passed around suggesting that the army carry out a coup against congress because they weren't getting paid

Newburgh Sgt. William Brown: one of three soldiers to be awarded Military Badge of Merit (precursor of Purple Heart) whil Continental Army was camped in Newburgh 1782-83

Then there are names that are just eponymous with the beer, wouldn't make sense if there wasn't a beer to drink

Case in point: the former NEBCO Gandhi-bot

Or just have a made up story to go with it,

    i.e. Birdsong Puppies on Penguins
