I never acquired a taste for coffee, so I avoid all things coffee. Don't have a problem with all the coffee beers though...there are certainly enough options that don't include coffee...

Since we are on the topic, I was wondering if anyone knew the first beer/brewer to add coffee.

Dont like coffee, i hardly ever drink it, and when I do i need to choke it down black or add a bunch of sugar to make it taste oK.

That being said, I love almost all coffee beers. Sumatra Brown and Mocha IPA were very good this year. love coffee in stouts as well. I am surprisingly not a fan of Coffee Bender, but I think that is only because I had numerous other coffee beers that I think tasted better when I bought a 4 pack of it.

I think we are seeing more coffee beers, because they are selling. I am glad we are seeing them often. Heck the Mocha IPA from Stone or the Rogue Cold Brewed Coffee IPA were surprisingly good also. If you don't like them or are tired of them you don't have to drink them. More for the rest of us.

Witch's Hat makes a coffee kolsch called Thrash Punk that is fantastic. It's actually a nice blend of the pungency of the coffee and the subtle fruitiness of the base style without overwhelming you with coffee. And it's one of the most flavorful 5% beers I've ever had--maybe not low enough to be a true "session" beer, but I could drink several pints before I grew tired of the flavor.

Don't mind coffee in stouts/porters, not so much in IPAS.

I'm one of those people who don't drink coffee, and honestly I can't see the value of including it over literally any other flavor. You'd really have to wow me to get me to like it. And at that point I'd still be wondering why you didn't just leave the coffee flavors out.

This is true - it was draft only in the past, first bottled this year. every time we've gone to the brewery they have told us "ya gotta try..." Finally this year they had it in the tasting room and we picked up a few bottles as a result. The missus and I both love Curieux and find the James Bean a cool riff on the base beer. Not better or worse, just different. We haven't popped a cork yet, so a NBS review is pending

I really like coffee, but have to watch my intake and coffee beer is no substitute, that's for sure. I have enjoyed many coffee beers (and have disliked a few), but I find I tire of them pretty quickly, especially if the coffee is overpowering or it is done poorly leaving that bitter, burnt taste behind. For me, I mostly find them enjoyable enough, but can take them or leave them. Maybe because I have weaned myself so far off the real thing?

Oddly, I have found that people who think they don't like "heavy, dark beers" will happily slurp up a coffee porter or a coffee stout. I've gotten a few people hooked with Alta Gracia Coffee Porter (I don't think it is available anymore :slight_frown:) and Berkshire Brewing Coffeehouse Porter. Then there's Allagash Odyssey which uses no coffee at all but certainly tastes like it does. Are there two different brewing skills here - one the ability to integrate actual coffee into the beer, and the second coaxing those flavors out of the grain bill? Maybe.

My thoughts: Wow! You mean there's no other beer to purchase besides the ones you mentioned and other coffee infused beers? That's too bad. I'd better guard the remaining other beer in my beer fridge carefully, lest beer zombies come to raid it.

But seriously and aside from the sarcasm, if you don't like coffee infused beer, don't buy it. There really are plenty of choices out there.

I really enjoy coffee in Porters/Stouts/Brown Ales - I thought Founder's Sumatra was fantastic and one of my recent favorites.

But I do not understand coffee infusions with lighter styles, such as, Cream/Blonde Ales and IPAs - with these I do think it's time to roll back the coffee a bit

Off Color has already done a coffee saison, Hyper Predator. It was awesome.

I'm in the camp that loves coffee in pretty much any style. Ever since Stone Dayman, I've been convinced that coffee in lighter styles would come along sometime, and it appears that time has finally arrived.

I actually love coffee more than beer (not that dark roasted Starbucks/Peet's trash, but real, pour-over/French press/Aeropress bright, fruity, sweet goodness), and I love seeing it in my other favorite beverage, beer (even if some of the coffee nuances are lost in translation.

Yeah, some of these brewery's put way too much coffee notes in their brews. Then again other's have put just the right amount that I like.

    Cheers!

Love coffee. Love beer. Love coffee beers no matter the style. Can't get enough.

The most coffee flavored beer I've had is surly coffee bender. I describe it as a beer forward coffee

Yeah, I still remember it myself. It was at a bar and came in a bomber.

First 6 to 8 oz. : wow, you sure know there's coffee in here.

Next 8 to 10 ounces : gah, it gets more annoying the more I have.

Next few ounces: I'm gonna regret finishing this soul sucking black hole.

Last few ounces : I hate this beer and the idiots who put it in a big ass bottle.

I have the same reaction to that style of IPA , and started to think of them as 'Spectral IPAs ' as a result.
