I imagine that it's a very different beer from that Jester King, but I see that Rattle N Hum West has Oxbow Bowie - a smoked light saison. Give it a shot. I had one some time ago. I was very happy with it at the start, but got less happy with it the more of it I drank.

    Time for another new brew.

Aufsesser Pils | Brauereigasthof Rothenbach Sonnenhof

    by imbibehour, on Flickr

Poured from the bottle into a Libbey style pilsner glass. Best before October 26th 2016.

Brass cold body, minimal carbonation through a very crystal glow, nearly a hint of orange as well. Head rocks hard and froths up nicely, big bleach white even creamy looking. Settles with a real nice crown and a bit of ring like lace.

Real dry grain aroma. Hints at ripping barely, dry milled flour and dart bread crust. Kind of almost hints at darker grains. Fascinating. Very malt forward with little noble to spicy hop character if at all.

Palate sticks to the basics. Slightly sweetened pils malt bill, with less of that dryness hinting on the nose coming out in the palate. Simple and very muted hop angle, more malt sweetness on the finish, does manage some good quality honey muted flavor. Solid malt depth, with a little touch of sweetness and a good coating.

It's a solid German pils, but also has a fascinating aroma that I was really hoping would translate into something more unique on the palate. In short it just gets the basics and delivers the goods.

Happy NBS. Another gorgeous Sunday in WI. The wife and I had a night out away from the kids. It couldn't have been much better walking around the capitol in Madison and enjoying a nice dinner.

Looks like I have some hops for today's new beer. Akari Shogun pours a hazy pale yellow with a 2 finger white head and good retention with splotch lacing on the glass. Aroma is very hoppy with citrus and oranges. Clean malts and some wheat. Flavor of citrus; grapefruit and orange like hops. Some wheat, with a bitter grapefruit rind finish. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Very tasty and not too different from Daisy Cutter.

Greetings, NBSers, on Week 599! I wanted to get in early today as I am interested in hearing others' thoughts. I was talking to the Starr Hill boys on Friday & their take was that they like my thoughtful (albeit wordy) reviews & that I tend to be a generous rater. I flashed on a convo many years ago with EvEvEv in which he asked: "When rating & reviewing a beer, are you looking for things to like or for things not to like?" Perfect! I am the former, because even with Minhas, at least their beers are cold & wet on a hot, humid summer's day.

I did a back-to-back bottle-then-CAN tasting and I'd like yinz to give it a read and hear what yunz guys think.

For today's first offering, Peasant King Imperial IPA.

    Peasant King

    Burlington Beer Co.
    American IPA / 9.50% ABV

    3.32/5 rDev -4.3% | Avg: 3.47
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.5

    Canned 07/27/16

L- The beer pours hazy yellow with a very modest off white head of about 1 cm. This head recedes fairly quickly into a thin ring with a large central island.

S-The nose is disturbingly weak on this beer with only some mild grapefruit and hints of alcohol breaking through.

T- The taste is mostly about the bitterness. Any fruitiness is quickly overwhelmed. The 9.5% alcohol is all there and adds astringency to an already bitter beer. The only complexity is the transition from grapefruit to alcohol. Malt? What malt? Not my cup of tea.

F-The carbonation in this beer is fairly light, and the the mouthfeel is medium high. There is a slick oily feeling which coats the tongue.

O- It fills a different niche in BBC's offerings. It's needs something in the malt department though, as the alcohol seems to run roughshod over most of the other flavors. If I'm going to drink something at this bitterness level I'd prefer more piny dankness which seems to play better with the alcohol. The grapefruit, while present quickly gets overwhelmed. Not something I'd drink again.

I was demolishing an old shed this morning, now I'm enjoying the A/C and a beer. This 90 degree day doesn't feel like Octoberfest weather but I was itching to try Sierra Nevada's collaboration with Mahs anyway.

Very nice. Good balance between bready malts and moderate noble hops. Refreshing. The hop bitterness lingers much longer than the malt giving a somewhat dry character to my tastes.

Paideia Pale Ale by St.Boniface Brewing (Euphrata, Pennsylvania)

Artwork: Simple yet with enough subtle detail. What drew my attention to this beer was its name. As the can explains, Paideia (spelled in a direct transliteration from the Greek alphabet) means "the development of a well-rounded citizen" (even though in modern Greek it simply means "Education").

Appearance: Dark amber. One inch of foam with decent retention. Lovely lacing.

Nose: Perfect balance of malts and hops on the nose. Some caramel notes.

Taste: Super hoppy without being bitter. Lots of malts. Both hoppiness and maltiness are intense but they balance each other beautifully. Such an awesomely balanced pale ale.

Mouthfeel: Medium body. Just the right amount of carbonation.

Overall: No idea how fresh this can was but it certainly tasted like it was canned within the last month. Superb pale ale. Reminds me somewhat of Pseudo Sue. I'll be buying more of this, as long as it's fresh (but I'm not sure how I could possibly tell).

Wow, Maria. Great write. While I know it definitely doesn't sound like a traditional Pils, it sounds quite tempting.

[IMG] Poured slowly down the center of the glass and got a massive 2 plus finger off white head that leaves some nice trails of lace. The beer itself is a dark amber, very attractive. Bottled on 7/29/16 and 9% ABV 4.5

Smell is apricot, lemon peel, caramel, pine, biscuit, and grapefruit. 4.25[IMG] Taste follows apricot, lemon, biscuit, and caramel upfront with pine and grapefruit, maybe a little garlic in the subtle finish, very nice and amazingly balanced. 4.5

Mouthfeel is above medium, fairly carbonated, not dry, and amazing drinkability for 9% ABV. 4.5

Overall I really like this beer, a more balanced DIPA I can't think of any. Stone you are one of my favorites and you didn't let me down with this. I didn't get any flavors of avocado, maybe a little honey. 4.25

Happy Sunday NBS players. A pretty busy day as the fiancé and I are flying up to Portland Maine later today for a nice little vacation. Going to do a bunch of site seeing, relax, and of course knock back plenty of good ass Maine beers. I will try and do a second post once I get there as there is what looks like a pretty nice roof-top bar at our hotel. First, I'm getting one in me before heading to the airport. Humid as all hell on the island.

My first new beer today is Mocha IPA, from stone. Seen a bunch of good BA's enjoying this so I figured I would give it a shot. The brew comes in at 9% and has a bottle date of 7/9/16.

A beauty of a pour with sharp and glowing amber color. Full clarity with a lush white head. The nose is a mix of hops, sugars, chocolate, and coffee. Lots going on with the very first sip. Pungent hops hit me upfront with a smooth, dry, and semi-sweet finish. The coffee and cacao really hit on the back end. Tones of flavor notes with citrus/fruity hops- lemon, lime, orange, and mango. The back side is coffee grinds, and semi-sweet chocolate, and espresso.

Overall, it's a pretty tough beer to describe but its pretty damn good. The flavors really blend together well on all aspects and it's so smooth that the 9% is dangerously not noticeable. I'm in the low to mid 4's.

Good Morning (Left Coast time) NBS!
    Thanks for the start Maria.
My school year starts with students tomorrow so I'm knee deep in finalizing, regionalizing, and rerefinalizing my plans for DAY #1.
But I look forward to drinking with you folks, so I will remain "hydrated" while hovering over 2 keyboards, and all the other random guides, curricula, and etc...

This is quite the start for a hot day:
    Beachwood Copernicus DIPA

    3.97/5 rDev -6.6%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4

    Bottled 080816...Freshy.
Golden. Brilliant gold hue. Initially appears crystal clear, but upon closer observation it has a slightly hazy tinge to it. Tight, fluffy white head soars northward 3 fingers high. Gentle, faint lacing clings lazily to the glass. Aroma is piney followed by some tropical mango notes and mild honey sweetness. Enticing. Flavor goes forth with more tropical and an accompanying sweetness. Pine notes are less pronounced and actually saunter toward a pleasant weedy dankness. There's also the faintest hint of pepper. Drying bitter notes smooth out the finish. Mouthfeel is slightly full for style, but I like that. Overall, I really like this DIPA. It goes in the tropical dank direction without going overboard on either.

It's a must try. I think they did it as well as anyone could without making making an imperial lager and the hops are all amercian bountiful , even the descriptions form the internet all say these flavors are identified with american ipa's.

G' afternoon NBS-ers! Wow! Number 599!:grimacing::grinning: Glad to join in on today's thread and seeing everyone's thoughts on what they are drinking.

Having a pretty lazy kind of Sunday here, perfect for some New Beer tastings!

My fist offering is a beer I picked up at one of my local joints that not everyone goes to for beer, so therefore there's always some decent finds there and typically at a better price!

    Ballast Point Orange Vanilla Fathom
    [IMG]
Paired this one with my lunch today, you can see that here.

This one pours with a beautiful crystal clear golden orange body and a frothy-foamy white head.

Smells as close to an orange creamsicle as you are going to get! A soft pine needle aroma peeks through, but this one is all about the orange and vanilla! There's no hiding that at all.

First sip...ORANGE! Just like sipping on some fresh squeezed orange juice. Then the vanilla sweetness shows up giving you the sensation of that orange creamsicle. The hops add a nice bitter bite and is a perfect contrast to the orange and vanilla sweetness that this beer definitely has in spades.

Mouth feel is medium and really has a nice amount of carbonation, there is a nice juiciness to this beer that is reminiscent of biting into an orange. This is easy to drink and has a dry finish to it as well. Drinks like a much lower abv sessionable style beer.

Overall, I was afraid this one was going to be a sweet, cavity forming mess...I was wrong! Even after the pour and getting all of those sweet smells from it I was worried. However, there's a nice balance to this beer that is commendable. Easy to drink, refreshing and a really tasty body makes this beer a real winner for what they were trying to accomplish.

    Cheers!

If you're a "sucker for the smoke" then I'm assuming you've tried Simple Means by JK. @Ozzylizard sent me that one. A very interesting beer.
I look forward to Throwback Thursday. I think it's a great idea. I think it's well thought out, and particularly well suited for this group, but also for the general BA crowd as well.

But it had me wanting to posit an idea with you folks. Being on the west side of this great land, I'm often reading NBS posts on Monday, Tuesday, etc... And there are times where I wish to reply to somebody's post, or comment, and want it to be available for others to chime in. What do you think about a New Beer Sunday (Week #) the conversation continues thread? Maybe it's too much, but I've had this idea fermenting for a while.
