One of the perks about having adult children, none of whom will be home for Christmas, is that Mrs Wiens and I can indulge ourselves. We're getting ready to leave for New York City, where we'll enjoy the holiday.

 

Middle of the night here, having trouble sleeping, may as well post right? Finished a bottle earlier tonight that is kind of special. It's the first barrel aged beer to be bottled or canned (and be sold) from Hawai'i, Lanikai Brewing Company's Mahina. Mahina is a BA Barleywine, aged for a year in whiskey barrels, with raisins and local turbinado sugar added during the process.


I'm admittedly not a huge Barleywine fan, in fact it's probably one of my least favorite styles, up there with musty Saisons. I don't like things that taste like "Horse Blanket" or "Hay". This one does it for me though. Sure, I don't have the refined palate of some folks, but I know what I like, and I like this.

It's got so many levels going on. Starts with dark fruits and not overly strong malts, then an earthy molasses, then to creamy/buttery, finishes with a pleasant oaky booziness. Gets more complex as it warms. I'll definitely have to go back for another. Huge congrats to Lanikai Brewing, the bar has been set, in my opinion. This is a big day for beer in Hawai'i. I'm looking forward to see other breweries responses.

My daughter was with me during practice yesterday, she decided to have a little fun with some Hawaiian Christmas "sledding". On the side of the hill, it says "Live Aloha Play Warrior". It's a message for our football team, as they prepare for their first bowl game since 2010.

Taking the new Teku for a spin after the morning run. It's feeling like spring today after the past several days! The weekend forecast looks like a soggy Christmas. The old saying around here goes......if you don't like the weather, stick around, it will change. Cheers gang.....

 

Alpine HFS... jucier fruit flavor than a lot of their ipas. A little bit lighter in body. Lighter bitterness. 6.5%, drinks really fast. The flavors of this beer work really well together. It stands out in a taste test. one of my favorites at the moment.

 

DUDE. That looks awesome... kudos on scoring that. Hopefully the aftertaste can stay with you until you have a follow-up beer chaser. yum.

Last midnight at work this season , whole week has been a complete fubar.
So last night , Electrical fire out side at midnight exactly. Luckily no traffic cause I think the whole bridge steel was juiced. Weird.
New beer , fresh. Not sure if I had a double IPA besides hatter from new Holland, propper glass wear from the stout gift pack I picked up for...... me who else?



Cheers! We're going to kick it up to notches unknown!
