It’s a fact: 2016 sucked for too many reasons, so let’s make 2017 an awesome year; at least beer-wise. Here are our tips to help achieve that goal.

I actually get quite a bit of high quality beer conversation, socialization and learning in line. The best lines are the ones that serve during the wait so I can get the drinking bit too!

You might want to keep this on the down-low. It's typically illegal for establishments to serve alcohol/allow drinking in this manner.

Well said! I am definitely guilty of a few of these. Cheers to a great 2017!

Most of this applies to life in general - words to live by! (with beer)

Nice listing and I will participate in all those suggestions this year.
Most will be easy, since I don't like lines, fake news or smartphones.
While I like to visit ALL breweries, I'd disagree that 'Beer Meccas' are disappointing. Not that I've had a chance to visit too many.

Immensely logical and level headed. Where is the like button.

    JK. Sort of.

These are all good points and things that I have noticed too with the trends in beer lately! Just didn't have the balls to put it down for the world to read because there is always someone who will disagree. Hopefully brewery's will just stay true to what they really want to brew, and where their heart is, instead of following the latest hot thing! Cheers friends!

Fantastic! I confess that I was critical of the loss of karma - not because I'm a snob (although I am) but because having karma available at least gives some indication of credibility and experience. (And not only so that we can rely on the experienced but so that we can be understanding and work with the newbies and uninitiated). Thank you. Karma back is a super plus.

As for the Resolutions? Love them! I confess that I use the phone to tick what I try but I try to do it quickly and unobtrusively. (And, truth be known, it's not likely I'll stop doing it). But the rest are resolutions with which I completely agree and have actually tried to follow the past couple of years.

I've not waited in a line for at least two years. Believe it or not, I actually eventually get around to trying the beer for which the line exists; and if I never get to try it?...well, my life really doesn't change and I continue to live just fine.

Agree even more about going back to "other styles" than the current de rigeuer. Todd is right! There are some relatively unknown brewers in small little towns that are killing it. (For example, and it's only one example of many, I'm sure, Hammerheart Brewing outside of Minneapolis is doing old historical styles that effing rock! It has become one of my favorite breweries.....anywhere!) I'm from Los Angeles and it was just luck and a great recommendation from a fellow BA that led me to this place in Minneapolis (a great beer town also by the way).

Anyway, kudos to the brothers. I'm going back to Boston again for the Extreme Festival next month and I look forward to shaking Todd's hand instead of shooting him some critical looks as I've done in the past.

Delighted to "have you back" BA!!

As a resident of a 'beer mecca' (FOCO), I'm certain the Bros aren't referring to this one in particular :sunglasses: Not trying to be defensive, but this place is anything but overrated.

The whole article resonated well with me.
I'm completely over running around looking for particular releases, though I did stand in a bit of a line for the first time on a unseasonably warm Black Friday and found it to be kind of fun (doubt I'd do it again though).

All that being said, some of my biggest lulz this year came from seeing pictures of empty folding chairs and the outrage associated with it :stuck_out_tongue:

It's funny, because Beer Advocate is the reason that I started to wait in lines for beer, use my phone to locate beer, visit beer meccas, and follow beer trends!

Found and tasted many good and great beers last year. Would to go to Colorado and taste some more this year. California in 2018. Best Wishes Y'all!

"Screw Lines". Yep. That's why I organized and hosted a neighborhood beer fest this past fall. A great time was had by all with no lines, no transportation issues, and much less expensive than a typical beer fest (23 people, 29 different beverages; $25 apiece with custom taster glass & food).

Do what you like. Many people live for the beer releases and most of them have bottle shares while in line and a lot of them are monitored by the police and as long as you don't act like an @$$, they have bigger things to worry about.

I, for one, actually hate beer releases, but have enough friends that go crazy for them, that I'm still able to taste the goods at shares.

I think you caught me on a few of those, and I have admitted my shame before on the phone one for sure. I aim to put it down, and enjoy the moment more.

I can be guilty of the phone use at times. When I travel for work I am alone at breweries/pubs often. I interact with "strangers" if they seem interesting or interested, but sometimes just get tied up in some random email/app/website.

I think Untappd has become too much of an addiction for many people. It's crazy - at Beerfests/Breweries you see half the people on their phone checking in beers. I use Untappd, but last year I decided to only log in when I get home to check in the beers. Made a big difference in terms of overall enjoyment.
