What happens if a rare bottle explodes in the winter?

I was reading this the other day and while things have been great with my shipping, I always worry about those rare bottles that I don't have any more of. I can't just run out and get another Foune like this guy did:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/bad-trader-situation-resolved-bikesnbeerftc.484498/

I guess the right thing to do is to send back whatever bottle(s) I received for the broken bottle back to the other trader (if that can be determined and agreed upon)?

By the way, is there a place for conflict resolution? Is it just reaching out to a moderator? Feels like a "tattle" situation that you would want to avoid (or maybe not?)

The sender is typically responsible until the box is delivered with all of the bottles intact. In the case of breakage, you work with your trade partner to find a resolution which could mean shipping another bottle, shipping a comparable bottle, or sending the box you received back.

You MUST always attempt to resolve the matter in private first. If you're not able to and the situation meets a "bad trader" criteria (see guideline here: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/how-to-create-a-bad-trader-thread.258091/), you can post about it in the Bad Traders sub-forum: https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/forums/bad-traders.73/

A side note: In the case of weather-related concerns (too hot or too cold), you should discuss with your trade partner and decide. If you're not comfortable shipping due to weather concerns, delay the shipment. If the trade partner insisted, make sure they agreed, in a message, that they will be responsible for weather-related breakages.

This is the correct answer unless you agree upon something else.
You have to be careful shipping lower ABV beers in the cold. A lower abv beer is more likely to freeze than something with a higher abv.

So maybe the more relevant question is: what if the other trader says "I don't want you to send back the box or give me a comparable bottle. I just want the bottle that you promised me."

He would be an unreasonable trader. You should then ship what you got from him back to him, offer to send money for his original shipping cost, and provide a label for him to ship the rest of your stuff back (if it's a larger box). You could be nice and let him keep the rest of the box or some of the beer, that's up to you, but you're not obligated to. If you went through all that and he called you out as a bad trader, he will get reamed here. If he got his box back and kept the rest of your box anyway, then he's a bad trader and should be called out.

This is really what I wanted to know. Thank you.

Do you think it would be OK to just pay to have my stuff shipped back? Maybe let him keep one bottle.

Why are you dumb enough to ship rare bottles in the winter in the first place?

Perhaps another way of saying that (without coming off as insulting) would have been "Perhaps you shouldn't take the risk in the winter and ask your trading partner to put the trade on hold until the weather warms up".

I recently did a trade where I was worried about my bottle arriving safely. I insisted on shipping first so that I could resolve anything that happened.
Last year I also had a trade partner who waited to send me bottles and was about to send them when a cold snap happened - early January. I told him to wait and only asked for them to be shipped in March, I had shipped early December. the wait was an easy choice as it was sours. Accidents happen, think about the consequences and don't rush into situation where you might lose your bottle.

Just googling your location on here + weather results in some very cold temperatures. Most of the CONUS doesn't get quite that cold, even in the heart of winter. That said, there are still random weird weather drops or rises in temperature that should be accounted for. Not to say people think to check it. I know my city has had a 40*F weekend, and then been in the single digits a few days later. In other words, winter being bad to trade in is relative to where you live and are shipping.

Yeah I don't actually live there, it's an inside joke. I'm well aware of how to ship beer and when not to ship beer.

Probably cuts down on the trade requests too.
