I've been very interested in trying this sort-of blanket-style subset of stouts. I see Indra Kunindra is listed as one (yet I wish to never taste it again...)

What are some widely distributed stouts that would fall under "export/foreign" territory?

    Clearly Guinness Foreign Export
    Clearly not Indra Kunindra

I guess my other question would be what qualities set them apart from traditional stouts?

And go for the new Antwerpen since it might be fresher.

That Antwerpen was really, really nice. Definitely worth searching out.

The style here is a bit of a mash up between Export, Foreign, and Tropical stouts. There's clearly overlap anyway.

Export stouts would have ordinarily been more heavily hopped. Tropical stouts referred to place of origin (or intended destination depending on what you read) and was used for stouts like Lion. Foreign stout essentially refers to the Guinness beer that has that name. It is (or was??) a blend with aged porter.

I don't really think these styles actually mean much of anything to the average craft brewer.

The beers from Guinness are where you should look since the style probably wouldn't even exist as a thing on this site without them. Plus, you asked for wide distribution. Just don't go into them expecting a modern version of a yeast-neutral hoppy East India porter.

Left hand Fade to Black, Vol. 1. I'm not sure if it's year round or seasonal, but I've thoroughly enjoyed it everytime I've had it.

Another vote for Fade to Black. Fantastic beer, and was easy to find, being stocked in a few superstores around me. Hopefully that translates to a decent distribution

Look for Schlafly Irish Style Extra Stout. Think it comes out in the next month or so, if not already. Like Guinness on steroids. I'm a Schlafly homer, but this was always one of my favorite seasonals.

I'm a sucker for a Guinness Extra Stout this time of year. Underrated beer. Their Antwerpen is really good, too. Upslope also makes one of they distro in your area, though I didn't think it was great.

Someone please correct any of this if you feel that I mischaracterized anything.

Love a good FES - when I can find one that is. I enjoyed Strong Back Stout in the Bahamas, I think I preferred it to Guinness at the time but definitely won't find it in the States.

Lump of Coal stout is usually found at most Total Wine stores around the holidays. There is probably some still on the shelf....have not tried it before though so I can't speak for its quality (if it's anything like Rideway's other beers it's probably pretty average)

Im not a fan of Schlafly beers, but their Irish style stout is actually quite good and well done.

Guinness Foreign Extra Stout and Antwerpen stout - both should be easy to get.
I just grabbed myself the Left Hand Fade to Black to try this weekend - its still sitting on shelves if you get them in your area.
Another good one is Moylans Dragoons - again if you can find it by you.

Man do I love a good FEZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!

The Guinness variety is the one you will most likely come down across, and is a great example. It's pretty obscure as a style that most brewers dont tackle.

I loved Indra Kunindra too, but it's filled with far too many spices and additions to think about putting in the same category in my opinion... but it's a great beer.
