Made a run down to Skookum yesterday with a couple friends, and I'll be damned if everything on tap wasn't great. Ambers Hot Friend(5.1abv), Jackass IPA(7abv), Mammoth Jack(8.2abv), and Murder of Crows(9abv) were the "standard" beers on the list. The rest of the list was:

Nibbin Oatmeal Brown Ale, finished on cocoa nibs-6.6abv
    Cafe Amaretto Strong Ale-9.5abv
10-4 Belgian Quad (Great beer. Just great) 9.5abv
Scary Joy Imp Oatmeal Brown, finished on toasted coconut- 9.9abv
Orange Chocolate Truffle Porter (coulda used a bit more orange, but really good) 7.5abv
Image of Objects IPA, made with Skagit Talisman malts and 100% Mosaic (really good) 6.4abv
Nelson Single Hop IPA (very good) 6.7abv
Four Continents, with Citra, Nelson, Southern Passion, and Mandarina hops (Reeaally good) 6.8abv
Almost Made It Triple IPA, made with Nelson, Citra, and Mosaic, described as "Juicy, tropical and dank" (fantastic) 9.5abv
Rye Lager with Rye and Wheat, Cascade hops, 5.5abv

At the risk of starting a much hated hype train, I think that these guys need to be in the conversation for best brewery in WA.

I love Skookum. Hollis is killing it, but Holy Mountain is still my favorite.

    Definitely top five brewery, though.

In the conversation definitely, but I'd personally still put 2 or 3 other distinguished breweries comfortably above them within the state. They'd have to wrestle it out with the others, but they are, regardless, one of the best, and not just in WA, but in the region (and, hell, beyond)...

That's pretty fucking good, and yet another indication of just how flush with greatness our beer scene is. No one elsewhere really knows or cares about Skookum, and all their beer retains a hype-free level of accessibility here. Where else would this be possible? And even with a thread like this, which will, however slightly, start to increase their name recognition and the covetous demand some others feel for them, I'm not terribly worried their beer will suddenly become that much harder to find. T'is yet more evidence of just how good we've got it...

(Now let's shut up, before we do any harm:slight_smile:)

Skookum is a top 3 in the state for me. Their highs aren't quite as high as Fremont or HM but they're consistently excellent at a level no one else seems able to match, in-state or out.

Lots of helpful information in this forum for various places in Washington, but this will probably be a good start for you.

In general, we try to keep the shorthand and acronyms to a minimum, but sometimes we slip. Feel free to pipe in when you have a question that isn't answered in one of the "Visiting" threads.

I might be in possession of one of those bottles. I might have been in possession of two at one point Saturday.

Finally drinking my Barren Wood tonight, and boy do I need to get a few more. Fantastic representation of the english style, delicious whiskey notes as it warms, big, chewy body. Price point is huge. Love this.

Agreed. Upper tier among the NW Barleywines. I've been drinking a lot of Wanders 3 Ton lately, (which isn't barrel aged), and Barren Wood is right there alongside it for me.

OK, now I'm on the Skookum bandwagon. We stopped there on Wednesday, after an overnight in Bellingham. The Bellingham spots were good, but Skookum was better. The taplist was very similar to the list posted by @beertunes almost a month ago. We had Murder of Crows, Jackass and Mammoth Jack from the standards, and Cafe Amaretto and the 10-4 Quad. Everything was very good, but the 10-4 Quad was the best. Prices are very good, particularly for the high ABV beers. We walked out with a 32 ounce growler of 10-4 for $7.50, less than 25 cents/ounce for an excellent, excellent barrel aged beer.

Finally made it out to the brewery last night after having enjoyed many of their brews around town, and it was a damn fine time. Love the feel of the place, very much a for locals/by locals appeal.

10-4 Quad was incredible, but I'm placing Cafe Amaretto at the top. Enjoyed a reuben sandwich and lively conversation with a vast multitude of dogs. Walked away with a growler of Wastefully Unconscious. Very much looking forward to repeated visits.

Now I'm at Super Deli Mart, drinking a Single Hop Nelson IPA from Skookum, and doggone, this one is quite good too. Maybe not quite in the same league as Alpine's Nelson, but really fine.
