That's a beautiful tribute! My Dad was an Army 2nd Lieutenant at the Invasion of Leyte Bay, still the largest naval battle in history. He landed on the beach under heavy fire, was wounded twice, and he brought his entire platoon out alive after achieving all objectives. He was heavily decorated, never talked about any of it until he was dying at only 58 years old (1976). When I was clearing out my Mom's attic after she had died, I found a personal missive from George C. Marshall thanking him for his group's actions on Kilay Ridge. I cherish these memories and know him better now than then. I also have quite a bit of material from family members in the CSA. It really is mind boggling. Just reading some of direct relative General George Doherty Johnston's Civil War experience is stunning.

    Oskar Blues Hotbox Coffee IPA:
    [IMG]free photo hosting

Golden hued with a quarter inch of off white to lightly tan foam resting on top. Moderate lacing. The nose is an intense melange of coffee and piney hops. The taste is initially pine, then quickly escalates to coffee, and back to pine at the back of the palate. The mouth is a touch oily and sticky.

No work tomorrow so grabbing another new one tonight.

    Oskar Blues BA Ten Fidy.

Simply put, this is outstanding. Top five BA stout for me!

    Poured from can dated 11/04/2016.

A: Pitch black with one finger mocha head that fizzles fairly quickly. Light lacing.

S: Bourbon, molasses, dark chocolate, walnuts, and rich roasted malts. Hints of oak and tobacco.

T: Flavors following aroma. Bakers chocolate, bourbon, molasses, marshmallow, and vanilla. A candy bar like resemblence. Extremely easy drinking for the ABV.

M: Full bodied with a texture that coats the tongue.

O: Wow! Simply outstanding. Just wish I could have landed more than one of these.

Back for another review with a beer I started on the porch as the sun was going down. The damn mosquitoes moved me to the cave and the Mets-Bucs game to finish. Not even June and it's unbearable to sit outside!:slight_frown: Enough complaining, let's drink.....

A single from the Goose Island Cooper Project No.1 that I purchased a few weeks ago. The bottle date is 01FEB17 with an abv. of 8.7% and it was aged in bourbon barrels for 4 months. I'm pouring it in a Bourbon County snifter for the review.

It pours a transparent amber color leaving a couple centimeters of disappearing 'dirty' white foam. No lacing is present. The smell is perfume, fusel alcohol, caramel and figs. It has a cleaning solvent-like smell. Taste is caramel malt, peat, perfume, musty wood and a very odd hot boozy finish. I never drank nail polish remover, but it immediately comes to mind. The feel is thin, oily and slightly bitter with considerable alcohol burn.

I had this on tap at the brewery when it was released and I wasn't a fan. The bottle hasn't changed my opinion. It's still a very odd tasting and hot beer for the 8.7% abv. I'm not sure what happened here, but it didn't work for this fan of barrel aged beer. Not a drain pour, just a disappointment and my score is 3.6 / rDev-7.5%.

Remember our fallen protectors of freedom tomorrow and thank a vet for their service to our great country. Have a good evening, I leave you with this.....

Hi everyone! Posting later than I planned, but was getting looks for playing with my phone instead of interacting with friends.

We did a nice tasting of 5 brews from the Hill Farmstead Leaves of Grass series.
In this pic is aged in oak barrels with hibiscus from this past September.
It had a nice pink hue, foamy and active head. Herbal, floral, and hint of spicy aroma.
The hibiscus flavor was crisp and floral, nicely balanced by the rich, earthy oak barrel.
Body was crisp, effervescent and light,
Overall a really tasty Farmhouse ale.
My favorite of the five we tried was the tart brown aged with sumac.
Looked kind of muddy brown, but flavor was crisp and light with a slight earthy sweetness. A bit like molasses , but not at all syrupy or cloying.

Damn, that label is terrifying! Good to have you in the thread. I've been wanting review another one you sent me here for ages now, but between allergies last week and work travel today, it'll have to wait. Soon enough though. Cheers!

My last new beer of the day...
International Affairs, a collab with Pizza Port and Zagovor Brewing... DIPA (8.8% abv) featuring grapefruit zest; 5/5/17 canning... Pale golden yellow body has a faint haze, fat ivory head left sheets of lace behind... Aromas were predominantly of sweet grapefruit, with some floral elements around the edges... Taste had a nice grapefruit element, but not too sharp - seemed to be rounded off with a sweet, almost honey-like character... medium-full body with moderate carbonation... mild bitterness, moderate sweetness... Some vaguely herbal notes brought something medicinal into the mix, but it was not as off-putting as that may sound... 5/5/17 canning...

Cheers, NBS - here's to new beer in your glass...

Another new one for me this evening. Poured from fridge temp. Pours jet black with about an inch of dark tan head. Looks really nice. Nose is a bit muted - more than expected. Getting a little bit of blueberries, a little bit of roasted malts, and a bit of barrel. Sweet, although not overwhelming. Taste is quite nice. Mellow notes of blueberry - not really syrupy as others say. A bit of bourbon comes through, but the chocolate is nice and strong. I'm a bit fan. Mouthfeel is good, although not too thick.

Wiseacre Golgi Apparatus , First to review this, another awesome Wiseacre offering, Lovely Brett Tripel. 4.25 overall

Pours a slightly hazed amber with 2 fingers of ivory colored head. Some lacing & head retention

    S: Pears, brett funkyness,

T: Follows the nose, a little white grape, oakyness & a touch of passion front & mango, plus dryness up front. Faint pineapple notes, that grow as this warms, vanilla, oakyness, white grapes & a little pomelo, some cloves. Finishes with white pepper, white grape, pear & Brett funk

    MF: Medium body, lively carbonation

Pretty damn easy to drink, with a nice Brett influenced Tripel. Lovely offering

Moderate pour yields a 1.5 inch dark tan head over a very dark brown, almost black, body with nice lacing. Nose of roasted malt, roasted coffee, cinnamon, chocolate, vanilla, and pepper. Taste follows with the spice from pepper building on the palate over time. Feel is a bit thinner than expected, but overall a great beer!

    Good Evening NBS.
    Round#2.
Almost done with report cards here. Got to sit on the back porch for a beautiful sunset. God, I love spring. Now I think I'll read pages 3-4 while I hydrate. Hey! I'm a multitasked.

Fremont Brewing Co.'s The Sister Imperial IPA
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/20680/72584/

Poured from a beautiful 12 oz can stamped 4/20/17. Pretty fresh? We'll see.
Pours a ever so slightly hazy gold. Off-white slightly frothy head rises just shy of two inches and then recedes to a beautiful milky head more akin to a stout than a IIPA. Clumpy, milky lacing.
Smell is a complex melange that begins with citrus notes blending into piney resins and hints of the malt base chime in. There's a slightly pungent, bitter, earthy note that also hints at sweetness. Dare I say a sweetness hints at alcohol heat. Perhaps...And that's not a bad thing.
Flavor is initially bitter citrus and pine together. A bit resiny, almost dank. A gentle sweetness hangs on but the bitterness is constant. Not overly so, but demanding respect. The citrus notes that are both orange and grapefruit at the beginning drop off to mainly a mild pithiness after the swallow.
Mouthfeel is slightly chewy for style. Medium carbonation stays for the whole ride. Slightly creamy too. Solid!

I'd make this one part of my regular lineup if I could.

Pokey used to live in my town, way back when, and when he tours west, he usually hits town. I tended bar at the venue he plays here. One night nobody showed up. No damn body. So, Pokey asked if I minded that they rehearsed some new material. Sure, go right ahead, I got as much going on as you do right now. Sure enough, about 2 tunes in, 3 bros stumble in the door. Pokey felt weird about practicing in front of "customers". I told him that these fools are too drunk to serve anyway, and his music wasn't gonna push their buttons, so, go ahead. Yup, about a minute into the next song, they bolted for the bro bar next door. That "private concert" remains a personal highlight.

Will message you about a trade for some of this.

@ovaltine . Glad you liked the S2S ESB. Today was the actual race, and, somehow, I ended up with the day off. Except, I was hanging in the beer garden at my work, and it got busier than anticipated, so they put me to work for a couple hours. So, I'm now on my 4th pint of the stuff. It ain't bsd, is it?

It's been a busy day so I'm a bit late joining the fun here on NBS. I had a co-worker's wedding to attend and my sis-in-law is in town for the weekend so I've been on the road most of the day. The wedding reception saw me having way more American Adjunct Lager (unnamed due to embarrassment of drinking swill) than I would consume on a normal basis but it was free beer so I had several! Before we left the house I picked what I hoped to be a great beer from the 'cellar'(the area in the bottom of the closet that the wife let's me store beer).
I acquired several bottles of KBS from my local bottle shop as a thank you for some Alchemist cans I gave the owner and decided today was the day to try one.
I'll admit I'm primarily an IPA guy but I'm working on refining my palate to properly review a good stout.
Pour looked thick, almost like oil coming from the bottle. A very vigorous pour yielded a finger of thick tan head that turned into a ring fairly quickly.
Nose for me was predominantly a dark chocolate, not much of the bourbon barrel I was hoping for from a highly acclaimed brew.
Taste followed, lots of dark chocolate. I drank this one slowly, let it warm but never really got the barrel presence I was hoping for. Maybe a little hint of coffee.
Mouthfeel was nice, thick and almost oily. That chocolaty flavor lingered.
Overall a tasty brew but not quite living up to the hype to me, maybe I expected more going into it than I should have but I have a few bottles sitting to try again another day.
