I am in complete agreement with this part of your post. Specifically, I have found I rather enjoy when a bitter roast malt pairs with a citrusy hop profile that itself does not pile on too much extra bitterness. I think the last one I quite enjoyed was Dubhe from Uinta, which the database is telling me I rated but did not review :grimacing::flushed:.

Good morning NBS friends! Today I am trying something many of you have likely already had, but this is the first time I've seen it reasonably fresh, so I'm giving it a go.

Sierra Nevada Sidecar APA with orange peel

BLUF: I like it, and the orange peel integrates so well with the hop flavors that I doubt you'd be able to guess it was added if you weren't told ahead of time.

Beautiful beer, although a modest head production from a relatively turbulent pour - and similarly lackluster retention - bring that score down a notch. The aroma is a straightforward and classic APA: pale grains with a touch of caramel, and hop notes of pine, a slight dank resinous character, and citrus. The nose is on the verge of outstanding itself, but this isn't a beer shooting to wow you with its over the top aromas.

Flavor and feel follow: it's quite grainy, crisp, and lively; carrying enough body at 5.3%, but very drinkable; a modest carbonation sting; and a short finish. As I mentioned above, the orange peel addition works itself well with the hop flavors.

Nearly 3.75 across the board, with the exception of mouthfeel, which I thought was outstanding.

Waiting on my flight home, and grabbing a new beer at the airport.

This is Harpoon's UFO white. Not sure why I haven't checked this one out before.

Nothing crazy outstanding but it's a solid easy drinking beer that's perfect for a hot summers day.

    Poured on draft.

A: Cloudy sunshine yellow with one finger frothy white head. Decent retention and moderate lacing.

S: Lemon zest, orange peel, cracker malts, and a touch of corriander.

T: Bright citrus with lemon and orange mixed with wheat and a touch of spice. White pepper and corriander.

M: Medium body with average carbonation.

O: Easy drinking and refreshing. Good summer time beer.

They did sell out the day of the release but you might be able to find it at the brew pub. I was able to snag 3 bottles so if you can't find it hit me up and we can work something out. Or there is always next years release.

    Cheers

Happy Two Beer Sunday! And Happy 'Nuther Additional Summer!

Cheers you all ! I like to pair food with more than one style of beer if possible and doing that can teach you a lot about styles. So same meal as before but this time paired with Sierra Nevada and Duvel Moortgat Hoppy Belgian Style Golden Ale brewed with lemon peel. That lemon peel also makes it a good beer for my series called The Additional Summer.

    [IMG] [IMG]

Pours spectacularly . Golden and the bubbles flourish to a white head that lasts well. Clear, brilliant and I would call that a very tasteful appearance. Nose is sumptuous with hops. There are some exotic hops in this. By exotic I mean I am not familiar with them. ( styrian celia, cashmere, calista and el dorado) Also the beer includes magnum for bittering and saaz which I think are very easy to recognize. They are the most prominent on the nose and their lush herbal is soft but powerful. The beer uses pilsner malt and French pilsner malt as well as wheat. I wonder what the difference is between French Pilsner malt and the other pils malt. Perhaps simply where it is grown?

Nose is very tripelish but not quite. It is a bit lighter and that is humorous. There is only a faint ester from alcohol on the nose and that is a bit more subtle than the tripel. Lots of spice both from hops and from the yeast and they marry so sweetly you cannot tell them apart. The lemon is brilliant and not overpowering. You can glimpse the sweet and cool lemon peel as well as the tart scent of the fruit itself. The hops are abundantly floral. Malts are crisp, cracker with a touch of sweetness.

The beer drinks like a dream. I was actually startled at how lightly it drinks. I had to wait for a modest warmth to appear after I had swallowed. That too is the humor of the brewer. The hops all marry well and the bitterness they leave is simply perfect. It lingers softly but does not leave harsh or too much. The beer finishes malty and with all that saaz hop to linger with a spice from their yeast that was more potent that I first realized. This beer will pair wonderfully with my meal today and can be taken after the berliner without any thought to wrecking the palate. Neither one will. I will say though that the combination of hops they have used gives this beer a decidedly American twist. I also think that is humorous.

As a reviewer when I feel like I can say things like this beer shows me some humor from the brewer, that is sensational and the best brewing you can experience. You have to know a little about style to appreciate this one's subtle twist that makes it seem more American. They have not really dumbed down the spice character of the style but by adding more hops and more spice they gave it a little bit of a different character. You also have to wait until the beer reaches it's cellar temperature before you even begin to see the pear ester from the yeast that is pure Duvel! Again a little wink from the brewer.

Excellent! Cheers to Sierra Nevada and Duvel Moortgat!

I resemble your remark. I have many a typo here. I believe I even missed the second "o" on the word "too" one time. I'm a teacher, and I haven't made that mistake in years. (I'm hoping it was just fast typing :grimacing:) But if my colleagues saw this mistake immortalized in these fermented halls, they'd flog me.

Happy NBS! Who turned on the heat? It reached 87° in S. WI yesterday and will be the same today, which is much warmer than the long range prediction was for June in WI. I'll be taking the kids to the pool this afternoon. Let's get on with the new beer!

I do have some nice AWAs in the cellar for warmer days, so I grabbed one with blueberries. O'so Tuppien's Demise pours a dark purple color with a 1.5 finger white head that fades into a thin cap and remains. Aroma is a sweet and tart with a good dose of berry and minimal funk. Yeast is wild and earthy with hints of barrel. Blueberry flavor is juicy, dominating with tartness and some subtle sweetness. Not as much yeast funk as the nose, but definitely tons earthy fruit. Finish has tart bite and slightly mineral quality. Medium body, dry mouthfeel with some tannins and must. A nice drinking AWA from O'so.

Three consecutive days of sun! Who would have thought?
Today I did some more outdoor work that I've been procrastinating on, under the guise that it's been too cold and wet. No excuses today, so the cars finally got their spring cleaning and I puttered around the yard. After taking the dogs for a walk I decided it was time for a beer.

I was at my local shop, Spruce Creek Provisions, and picked up some Peche Mortel. Right next to it was my new beer for today, Chemin de Croix (I think that translates to Way of the Cross). This beer is produced by Brasserie Dieu du Ciel (God in Heaven) in Quebec. It is an American porter, bottled 2016-01-22 and has an ABV of 6.3%.

It pours a very dark brown with a small tan head. There is a bit of lace.
Nice aroma: roasted malt, chocolate, and coffee.
The coffee is more apparent in the taste. There is some chocolate also. Later in the taste some char comes through and I am thinking espresso.
    Medium-bodied, on the dry side.
I think the beer tasted very good, considering it is almost a year and a half old.

Good afternoon NBS-ers! Glad to be back with something new to join in today's festivities.
This one is from a brewery out of Tampa that I have enjoyed other beers from: Coppertail Brewing Co.
    Hyperbolic Extra IPA
    [IMG]
Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Teku glass. Best enjoyed by date of 06/20/17.

Appearance: Pours a bright golden yellow with some slight haziness in the body. 1/2 a finger's worth of head full of tight white bubbles.

Aroma: Strong aromas of pine and fruits; peach, mango, some pineapple.

Taste/Mouthfeel: More pine up front with a dry malt finish. Since this is nearing the end of it's best by date I think the hops have become a little more muted. Still this is easy to drink almost too easy. Not a lot of carbonation in this one either, which isn't a bad thing.

Overall: A decent IPA that I will be revisiting again when I can get it fresher.

    Cheers!

This should be my last NBS featuring east coast hops for a while. I'll shift my focus to either locals, or something else next week. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be much new beer of interest being produced locally at this time. While I've enjoyed several variants of this beer, this will be my first go at the base edition of one of Tree House's DIPAs. I'm just going to hop to it....

    Tree House's Bright.

The first 12 ounces out of the can into the glass pour a nearly clear (just a tinge of fog) yellow with a finger and a half of white foamy head. Pouring the final ounces of the can into the glass gives turns it into a hazy, orange glow. Head retention is good, with great lacing left behind. Aroma is a surprisingly delicate bouquet of hops - citrus, orange, lemongrass, and flower. Flavor profile is decidedly more robust, with notes of resin, citrus, lemongrass, and flower. Citrus and orange make an appearance when the final ounces of the can are poured into the glass. The resin hop quality really sticks to the palate, and refrains from being overly bitter or commanding. Mouth feel is smooth, with a fine, velvety texture. Bright has a medium thickness. Overall, a pleasant DIPA that doesn't just smack the tongue with hops, hops, and more hops. While it is hoppy, the hops remain well balanced and thought-out. There is a hint of bitterness, keeping it from being thrown down in a matter of minutes, which is perhaps for the best with a 7.8% ABV.

    Score: 4 | 4.25 | 4.25 | 4.5 | 4.25 | BA Score: 4.24 | rDev: -3%

    Personal notes:
The Bright series really shocks me how clear it pours straight out of the can. It's the last couple ounces of sledge that really give it that NE IPA look, otherwise, it looks like a fair IPA - although with bad head formation (low). Considering how this beer drinks, I'd put it more alongside Heady Topper. That is to say, it's not a hard-fast NE IPA. While it's a tasty DIPA, I'm not sure I'd go through the struggle of trying to track down a trade for this one again, unless of course I were getting other Tree House brews.

Good morning and happy New Baby Sunday! That's right! For the first time ever, I became an Uncle! My brother-in-law's lovely wife gave birth yesterday afternoon to their first, a boy they named Wallace, who is now a victim by association to this crazy family. My 3 1/2 year old daughter became a big sister only 3 months ago, and now is super excited to have her first cousin! What a day to born on too. Drink With The Duvel Day :grimacing:...! Well, I think there will be a lot of back and forth between houses from now on and probably not much else. All well, it's the new "what's next?" I guess. Speaking of "what's new?", It's time for my new beer on this fine sunny Southern California day.

    Left Hand Brewing Company
    Milk Stout
    - Sweet Stout

A: Pours pitch black with brown when held to light, clean, and with a small tan slightly creamy looking head that doesn't leave much behind. Minimal lace.

A: Bitter chocolate, burnt toast, and a little bit of iron/metallic aroma.

T: Again with bitter chocolate, maybe some milk chocolate due to a hint if sweetness, but mostly roasted grain/toasted bread. Less iron presence than anticipated.

F: Not as creamy as I was expecting or hoping for. Still smooth with some coating, but medium carbonation, pretty well balanced and a dry finish.

O: Very rarely do I want more sweetness, but I think this one lacked in that area along with a creamier feel. Still a pretty good stout, but not the "Milk Stout" I was expecting.

After my official review, I gave this a rating of 3.78 with an rDev of -3.6%

Cheers everyone and I will see you all soon!

Cheating a bit here since I drank this brew on Friday and it was not being sold in growlers to bring home.
Jedi Mind Tricks a 9.7% ABV DIPA from Twin Elephant Brewing. DIPAs aren't one of my favorite styles but I'll try anything since I might like it. The beer was good pretty much like any other DIPA I've had big, robust and a little sweet. It hides the 9.7% ABV very well. Not bad but it's not going to change my mind about the style.

    Congrats on being an uncle!

Good beer choice as well. While I wouldn't consider it one of the best milk stouts out there, it certainly is an easy-to-enjoy milk stout! Someone brought over a 6 pack of that, and we finished it up shortly afterwards. Good stuff, and a good night. I wonder if anything changed between the bottle and can versions? I did pick up a good bit of creaminess out of it, although I do recall it having a prick of burnt and bitter notes in the nose.

NBS Victim of my own enthusiasm edition. What you thought you were done having to read about AAL's? No such luck I'm afraid. This weekend has actually been some good research for my daughter's graduation party when I'm invaded by hoards of Macro only drinking relatives.

The beer pours a super clear golden yellow with a fluffy white 1 and a half finger head. The head doesn't stick around long however which doesn't bode well for the feel. The nose is actually better than I was expecting based on some of my previous AAL tastings. There is a discernible if not overly strong aroma of sweet corn. No DMS or sulfur detectable thankfully.
As expected the taste is also fairly subdued and mimics the nose with corn sweetness that never reaches the level of cloying for me. (reader beware: I have a big sweet tooth so YMMV).
The feel is as expected quite watery and thin, along the lines of the PBR I had yesterday. Overall I find myself enjoying this, but that enjoyment is undoubtedly benefiting from the fact I just got done mowing the lawn and find myself parched. You could do worse than Rolling Rock on a hot day. You could undoubtedly do better as well.
