Very cool website devoted to the esthetics of beer packaging: http://www.ohbeautifulbeer.com/ Drink it all in!!!
maybe i'm a cynic but when i see an amazing label i instantly think the beer is trash and they're using a great label to entice you BUT that is obviously not true, at least not every time you make great beer with a creative label, i'm in! also, what about brewing company logos? Dogfish Head's is so simple yet iconic and visually appealing

You should check out Label Approval, too. https://www.beeradvocate.com/articles/category/history-culture/label-approval/
Years ago, I had a very opinionated supplier of great Spanish wine that outright declared that packaging is meaningless. The proof is in the bottle, he said. While that is true, the great concern that people take to present their products in unique and original packaging is a big piece of the fun in this new beer craze. Label art and modern marketing in general will be studied for years. I cannot get enough.
Unfortunately, it's not about the beer you make. It's about the beer you SELL. The label is a big part of that.
We do drink with our eyes first. Design is a huge factor on the enjoyment of a brew sometimes. It's a subconscious thing. Omnipollo has the right idea. The illustrator/designer of their labels is brilliant. Even if you don't like the beer, that aesthetic gives it elegance, enforces its artful form. Omnipollo is also quite a great brewery beneath the labels, but they are a good example of enticing marketing. I know Tired Hands has their in-house and collaborative labels, but design-wise, Omnipollo wins every time. The labels sell the beer more than anything.
God, I love beer label art threads. Yes, I know that obviously the beer inside is the only thing that really matters, but man. Some of the artwork from the beer labels the past few years has been some of the best art I've ever seen. Clown Shoes, Pipeworks, Modern Times, Tired Hands, Sixpoint, and many others consistently knock it out of the park with their sweet packing every time. Beer is a beverage, but beer is also eye candy, and I personally admit to being crazy about awesome bottle/can art. EDIT: Speaking of which, the newest brewery I've found with some of the best art I've ever seen is Collective Arts, who features rotating series of unique art designs with every new release. It's truly stunning stuff.
Important points, both. I believe that if it looks like you put a lot of thought into your label design, the more likely that it is that you put a lot of thought into your beer. There are obviously examples to the contrary on both sides of the coin, but the obsession involved in putting out a good AND well-presented product should be something that more people possess. FWIW, this is why a LOT of older breweries have recently rebranded their lineups. Being recognized on the shelves is getting to be more and more important as markets get more and more crowded.
I've been deceived by a label now an then, and certainly frequently swayed...but yes it can go either way. Your statement made me think of the brewery below. Their label art is at least interesting, but are a pretty high quality print. The web site - well, I find it modern and well-connected, I'd say it's "hip" but in the old sense of the word. It's also clearly well-integrated - everything goes together, even the humor, the somewhat annoying use of lingo - but it works. It's eye-catching, quick-moving. It's fresh and seems pretty modern. I guess if I summed it up in a word, I think their overall approach is "slick". https://www.karben4.com/ I have had a couple of beers from this brewery - their beer rating here is 3.9 and the place rating is over 4. But it all works together and when I checked out the website it struck me as these guys are playing a very modern, integrated marketing game with just a bit above average beers.
what's also pretty cool about this is how long they've been doing it...I remember having beers with this guy over 5 years ago, long before the massive proliferation in beer cans and label art...
some great label designs, nice one for posting, makes every label or print in the uk look like its done by a 2 year old!!!!
