The title says it all. Firestone, not content with a great Oatmeal Stout, releases what looks to be a great variant in their line of stouts.

Nice! I love Velvet Merlin. This sounds great!

Velvet Merlin was already really good, and the chocolate-and-coffee stouts also tend to be great. I know it's lower ABV than a lot of the imperial stouts with these additions, too, which is always nice since I've been tending more toward the lower-ABV stuff recently.

Definitely going to try this when I see it.

Grapefruit UJ up next? They have started to go the way of just flavoring thier cores. Between this and the move to 12oz specialties the future is looking bleak. Disappointing.

What other cores have they flavored? And I love the 12oz specials. I dunno, FW is still cranking the jams in my book.

This isn't a new recipe, just new format. Doubt they're going where you implied.

Really? I've never seen it released before. Brewery only maybe?

I find Velvet Merlin is OK. Nitro Merlin is a different story. That stuff is pretty awesome. Might give this a try.

At least in bottles it was shelf available, but maybe limited to CA.

I had lunch in at Venice FW last weekend and stupidly did not get a half pour of this stuff. The next Leo v. Ursus rye IPA is interesting though.

Eh. Less for more, flavoring classics...that's exactly where they are going.

Not to be a douche (especially because I like your posts!), but they flavored one classic, with about as natural a complement as you could choose (coffee) and that has a long history of being used in the style at hand (stout). That's the only one they've flavored. And they did it 3 years ago as part of a bomber mixpack, this year they just expanded to cans. This isn't recent, it isn't extreme, and there's been not a shred of expansion elsewhere.

As for less is more, that's well trodden ground, and I doubt anyone will change their mind at this point -- either you like small formats and are willing to take a marginal per oz cost increase in exchange for the flexibility of not being saddled with bombers, or you like the shareability and value (can't believe I said value and bombers in the same sentence) of bombers.

I'll give it another try as I had a bottle last year and I wasn't impressed. I prefer regular Velvet Merlin to this. I remember the mocha and coffee being muted. Hopefully FW can get some fresh cans out as they're beers are usually around 4 weeks by the time I see them in the stores.

Good. I was disappointed that Adversus was more or less a re-tread of the initial release, Fortem.

I'll give this one a go. A beloved FW fan since the early 2000's. They have never made anything that I have truly disliked. My wife would approve, thus...its a "must try."
