They make a really good Marzen with a punny name, Marzen Scorsese.

    Can poured into teku glass

Hazy, golden orange , one finger white foam cap, good lacings

Aroma of citrus, tropical fruits, pineapple, whiff of grapefruit

Taste of grapefruit, bit of orange, citrus

Smooth mouthfeel, hop bite but not too strong, the bite lingers nicely

    Bit boozy

    Good beer

Dogfish head Namaste witbier. Light gold color with medium carbonation which adds to a nice feel on this beer. Aroma is coriander and [IMG]orange peel but not very overpowering. Taste is identical but also some yeast and a bit of a bite on the finish. This is a subdued version of the style but that's what makes it work. It's light, refreshing, but still flavorful enough to make a decent impact on the tastebuds.

L-The beer pours a clear reddish brown with a 2 finger off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring with modest lacing present.

S- The nose is pleasantly malty without being sweet. The hops present are well balanced and behind the scenes.

T- The pleasant malty nose translates very well to the palate. The malts are toasty rather than sweet. Hops are there, but do not interject and detract from the malts.

F- The mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium. Carbonation is restrained. Not the driest finish, but the toasty aspect of the malts help in this respect. I'd personally like a touch more carb to help with the finish.

O- A very well done American fest beer. I'd happily drink this again in the future.

Games are on, and the new beers just keep on coming...

Finback's Sublimated, featuring Mosaic hops and Columbus and Mosaic lupulin powder, this double dry hopped double IPA pours a light gold color with a faint haze to the body, and produced a couple of fingers of white fine which slimmed quickly into a flimsy cap with some laces arms trailing behind... Aromas citric and grassy, light and bright; followed by dry and pithy citric impressions, mildly sweet and mildly bitter, crisp and tangy; clean-finishing and easy-drinking...

    Hey what's going on?!

Another tasty Sunday! I got back from Canada enjoying much of the scenery, and boy did I get out in time as the first snowfall in the hometown hit yesterday.

That ladies and gentlemen is awesome timing.

Weather wise though, it seems I am stuck in the after-effects of Nate as it has been overcast and wet for the past 3 days. I thought today I might get to see the sun... yeah what's that thing?

The pepper harvest has been incredible though, I am already roasting, and working on making some chili relenos and already made some ranchero sauce.

Being away for travel means you come home to an empty fridge. With that being said, I had to do a major beer run on Saturday, and WOO BOY did that ROCK! I have many new goodies and am looking to dive into them..

Every day... is new beer Sunday... so let's have some new beer!

What's new for our hero today?

Poured from the bottle into a pokal glass.

Pale chestnut amber brown, dark brass and flirts with copper red for the body color with a bit of a neat shine to it. Fine and small amounts of linear carbonation, but not much head creation. A solid one finger creamy off white head settles quickly to a creamy collar.

Light hits of toasty malts, with a faint touch of hazelnut and creamy quality on the nose. There's some crispy toffee but with a very subtle aroma character to it. Sweetness is at a little minimum which is nice too. Comes across pretty light more bock than doppel at such a high abv so far.

Palate is quite a surprise. Very sweet, but tolerable, probably more so since the nose doesn't seem to hint it's going in this direction. Lots of caramel richness and almost taffy like sweetness of toffee. A real umami thick richness, there's a description that has really hit on this beer nicely, big and almost fatty tasting. Aftertaste goes with a nice grass and soft herbal quality of hop which lingers with some clove and phenolic mixing in, almost like a breath of fresh air.

Very neat bock, some boozy qualities, but a solid tasty brew.

Jokes? Hmmmmm....I have a lame one that my son chuckles at, not sure if I wanna say on here.

The aroma had an awesome sweet boozy bourbon wood flowing over some dark fruits, dark bread and milk chocolate. Light dark chocolate as it warms.
The flavor leaned towards the sweet side through the prior mentioned aromas and added a touch of Belgian yeast, some allspice, and some earthy notes. Semi-dry cocoa powder to dark fruity and Belgian yeast sort of aftertaste.
The mouthfeel was about medium bodied with a nice sipping quality about it. Carbonation felt right on par. ABV felt as projected. The finish was semi-spicy with a little bit of "grip" and an acceptable stickiness.
Overall, bourbon barrel aged Quad? Hells to the yeahs, you bet it is and an absolutely fantastic one well worthy of having again.

Hey, all. I have a great cat joke for you all...

    Actually, I don’t. I’m just kitten around.

    (deep sigh)

    I’ll show myself out.

New beer! Challenging my self awareness on this one. I’ve proven that I’m not a big fan of vanilla added to beer (outside of the occasional BA super stout). However, when Trillium serves up some vanilla on top of one of my favorite porters I have to give it a go.

Pot & Kettle with vanilla - looking great in the glass:

Smooth as all heck, this one is. The vanilla does a great job of playing a bit role to the stars of the show, namely the coffee, chocolate and char flavors coaxed out of the malt.

Roasty, toasty and slightly sweet - the beer’s flavor components all play in harmony and complement one another. There is a slightly chaky aftertaste that I attribute to vanilla (don’t know if I’m right in assigning cause) but it doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment. Nicely done with a reasonable ABV. Nice to prove yourself wrong every now and then!

Last day in paradise, so breaking into something special. 2016 special release of Big Bad Baptista (I have not tried its "male" counterpart).

A ceramic mug is the best vessel the RV has to offer, but it seems to pour near-black with light brown at the edges. No head, but it leaves some dark khaki foam lacing in its wake as the level reduces.

Smells of dark chocolate, cinnamon, whiskey.

Taste follows, with the whiskey initially hitting me strongly in the chest, warming. I don't taste vanilla, or coffee. Perhaps I should have opened this up sooner.

Slick mouthfeel, leaves a lingering whiskey coating. A slow sipper for sure.

Enjoy your Sunday. I'm going to soak up this final day of desert music magic.

I didn't get the sourness, but sometimes suspended yeast can give off a twang. I always do a decanted pour for that reason.

Even if you take away the fruity hop flavors, I thought that the base of this beer was all wrong- bland malt flavor, sugary sweetness, not remotely crisp. It sure as hell doesn't come across as having been lagered, that's for sure. It even fails as a kellerbier, imo. All in all, I found it to be a very cynical beer with no forethought or planning, and poor execution. But, hey, just make something 'soft' and 'juicy', and you can charge $5 a can no matter what you call it.

Sorry for being so down on a beer that you gave me, but I really do appreciate the opportunity to try something like this. Thanks again!

Founders Harvest Ale a 7.6% ABV Wet Hopped Ale. Nice brew very fresh bottled on 09/20/17. Poured into a pint glass it's a bright golden color with a thick white head. The aroma is pine with hints of melon. Tastes of malt melon and a bit of citrus. Mouth feel and the finish is dry. A very enjoyable beer.

Happy NBS. Cool and blustery day in WI, very fall like. Decided to enjoy a big beer from my cellar. Here's my joke.

A pirate walks into a bar with a steering wheel on his pants, a peg leg and a parrot on his shoulder. The bartender says, "Hey, did you know that you've got a steering wheel on your pants?"
    ...
The pirate responds "Arrrrr!! and it's driving me nuts!"

This beer was canned in November 2016. Obsidian with a thin brown head. Appears viscous with no light passing through and stretched webs of lacing on my glass. Very nice aroma sweet bourbon, mocha, chocolate, vanilla, even some molasses with the roasted malts. Nice flavors of sweet bourbon, mocha, vanilla, coffee, and molasses. The roasted malts just add to the experience. Taste is sensational. Really enjoy sipping this. Somewhat heavy and thick, but not over the top. Smooth and creamy with nice carbonation. Excellent and right up there with Bourbon County.

Howdie, NBSers. I’ll be back with a couple of new beers later on, but I feel compelled to contribute to all the excellent funnies being shared. This isn’t a joke as much as an observation, and it’s appropriate for this fine group of distinguished beer nerds .....

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

We had to vacate our home for the afternoon so the realtor could host an Open House (I’ll cut anyone a heckuva deal if they want a vacation home in beautiful McKinney, TX). We’re hanging out at the park with our fingers and toes crossed, including Ranger, who says “Hi, NBSers!”

Ok, new beer #2, a small batch experiment from Deschutes Brewery by way of @Lingenbrau called Smoked Gose:

As I related in a text to my benefactor of this beer, I seem to recall making a smoked gose at one point simply because I had some left over smoked malts. Mine worked well enough for me, but I didn’t share with anyone.

A very good brewery should be able to do it better - let’s see!

A beer that came to mind in having this is Schlenkerla’s Lagerbier, which I believe (sure someone can correct me) has no smoked malt but is brewed or fermented in the tanks that hold the brewery’s world class Rauchbiers. There is more smoke in the nose than the taste, but to me the smoke is very light in the taste, perhaps a tad hidden by the more prominent but not strong sour note.

My GF’s BIL is not a sour fan, but he didn’t cringe at a quick sip of this. He also indicated he got a decent smoke flavor. I got a little more with a considerably warmer beer, as the sour seemed to fade slightly. To me, almost everything was light about this beer. Nothing was bad, but it sort of lacked a strong identity/personality to gravitate towards.

Great review. Kind of surprised, though I totally agree that you'd like to see more smoke. I think this idea for a beer is perfect and works well together. And as I mentioned to you the other day, next time you're in Arizona, you have to check and and (try to) grab a taste of Arizona Wilderness' Smoked Apple Gose. Not that there many examples of the style, but it's the bar for me, not to mention of of the best and unique beers I've had. Cheers!

Cheers you all . I love all the jokes so if you will permit me the latitude. It is still October and my favorite oktoberfests have been in the German tradition or the marzen style. Elicottville and Genesee being the two most consumed around here next to the German imports. My dessert today is inspired by the marzen style beer. This is Apples with Black Vinegar and Cream.

This is La Raza Amber Lager from Farmstrong Brewing Company
    [IMG]

Pour is a light bronze with a tuft of off-white foam that sizzles to a thin and smokey film. Crystal clear. Nose is a feint peat and ground grain. My first sip puts honey and wheat on the front end. Finishes with more natural honey with a tiny bit of citrus. Clean and enjoyable. Not something I would normally grab, but I liked it.
