Good morning BA, have a great Saturday! Having a second thanksgiving later today, a few relatives are coming to visit this afternoon. Might make a trek out for a beer haul as well before then; but if not, it definitely will be tomorrow.

Amazing pale ale as always. Found a fresh pack yesterday. Flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, apricot, mango, melon, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine hops; with moderate caramel, brown sugar, and toasted bread malts; and floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel, grassy bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body. Balanced sticky hops and bready malt creaminess in the mouthfeel. Lightly resinous, increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very bright/juicy on hops and pretty dank. Balanced malts without being too sweet. Insanely easy drinking. A top favorite pale ale. Will probably be grabbing another pack before the weekend is over.

Incredible DIPA. Just as amazing as I remember from the first release. I preferred it more after I aged it for a year, from what I remember. Flavors of big grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, peach, mango, lemon zest, orange peel, and pine hops; with moderate honey, vanilla, toffee, bourbon, and toasted oak sweetness; and floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine/rind bitterness and bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium-full bodied; balanced bready/grainy creaminess, sticky hops, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Slight resins and increasing bitter/tannin dryness. No astringency. Minimal warming 12.4%. Perfectly balanced between DIPA and barrels. Never overly sweet or heavy. They really nailed it with this one. Glad I bought 2-3 4 packs. This has been neat to see develop over time as an IPA. The vanilla/toffee barrel notes and honeyed malt sweetness are starting to get really intense now after 6-7 months. Still have plenty left yet.

2017 is tasting amazing! Flavors of huge dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty dark roast coffee, molasses, caramel, toffee, vanilla, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of dark fruit, smoke, and charcoal. Roasted bittersweet and bourbon/oak spicy balanced finish. Full bodied, awesome creamy/silky/velvelty and lightly slick mouthfeel; with some lightly drying chalky roast and tannic oak/bourbon notes after the finish. Mildly warming finish, zero boozy barrel notes. Very smooth sipper. I thought the 2016 batch was an improvement over the original 2015 batch; this does another step forward for me with the higher ABV. Fantastic barrel integration/balance with the fruity/nutty coffee and rich malts; without being overly boozy on the barrels. I usually reserve most Weyerbacher BBA beer for a year or more, but this one does not seem to need as much mellowing from the barrel booze aspect. Glad I still have plenty more from this batch. Will be stocking up at the turn of the year once again.

This is still tasting insane! Flavors of lightly tart blueberries, milk chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, fudge, vanilla, toasted coconut, bourbon, oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of molasses, licorice, and raisins. Light roasted bitterness and fruit tartness on the finish. Full bodied with an amazing creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel. Some light roast malt chalkiness and fruit acidity; touch of dryness from both. Never cloyingly sweet, but definitely a dessert beer. Amazingly smooth, minimally warming 10.5%. A near perfect balance of berries, cocoa/vanilla, malt, and barrel character. Tons of flavor complexity, and it all comes together extremely well. I've always been a big fan of fruit stouts, so I'm not surprised how much I loved this one. Seems pretty polarizing to most people, but this is one of my favorites from last year. This is the 8th bomber I've had, and I have a few more in the cellar. I keep grabbing these randomly every time I see them. Well worth the price. One of my regular stores still has a couple cases.

This is an odd but interesting cross between a Herb/Spice and Gose beer that's brewed with Verjuice, pomegranate concentrate, orange rind, ginger and rosemary. It's got a light, crisp tartness to it, with quite a bit of herbal aroma. I quite like it, but I'm a sucker for rosemary beers.

    Good Morning BAs

Last evening in Beijing before heading home. Back at Jing A tonight. Having a colab nogne o/Jing A Koji Imperial Saison. 14% and a bronze medal winner at Asian beer cup. To be honest it’s not really my thing. Boozy and a bit of weirdness to it, unpleasant flavors. Knowing it was 14% I expected boozy but there is just not enough “Saison-ness” going on here to keep me interested. I’ll make it up with the next beer.

    Cheers BAs

The world is ending, because I finally found the ONLY craft brewer that knows how to brew a proper Mexican lager that’s not over-hopped. I’m so sick of drinking craft Mexican lagers that taste like hop bombs. I can’t remember the last time I drank a Corona or Negra Modelo and bragged about the hop profile. Anyway, rant over — this beer rocks. I only bought a single bottle to review.

After yesterday was my best sales day yet (surprise), going to spend my day off setting up decorations outside before a visit to Santa tonight. But first, a morning Mounds bar/beer.

    Mollusk • Funky Roots

Here’s my entry for today's Third Annual WBAYDN Beer Turkey Day. This thing has been lurking in the back of my fridge for a few months now since I’ve been a little afraid to drink it. All you need to know is that this stuff was "brewed with parsnips". Definitely funky…

Finally got around to cracking open 18th Street Brewing's Hunter (Double Milk Stout, with cocoa nibs). Love this...roasty chocolate, thick, velvety, nice balance to it, especially good with some left over pumpkin pie. Cheers all!

No, not just the same beer, from the same 12-pack. The GF is a bit of a hoarder and apparently that applies to beers she wouldn't ever drink. So, let's see if a year of cellar-aging has helped Miller Lite.

Yes, there is a beer in that left picture - it's like one of those mosaic photos where there's a hidden photo inside. Pours fairly clear yellow golden with a frothy white head - sorta like what it looked like in the alley behind the fraternity houses back when I drank this more regularly in college.

Nose still has a light grassy note with a bit of stale corn - much like the GF's parent's neighbors house after the feed has been put out for the chickens on a spring morning. Well... aging has mellowed this. From mostly tasteless to tasteless. The GF one time sent me a beer menu with descriptions of each beer, and in the corner they had Miller Light with the description "Beer-flavored water." Maybe they were serving cellared cans, too.

Well, I poured that out in the bushes outside, as some deer watched. After I re-entered the house, I saw them walk up... sniff around a little, and then do something that showed they respected my marking of my territory.

Anyhow, onto this beer which still has a good deal of flavor after over two years in the same cellar:

    Announcement time!

For those who weren't around the last two years, or were unable to participate for whatever reason, now's your chance because we're doin' it again!!! Today is the Third Annual WBAYDN Beer Turkey Day. Your bellies should be rested and ready by then, because you're gonna need them in tip top shape. That's right, get your bad beers ready, whether they be stale, infected, or just plain poorly conceived, and tell us all about it. We've all got them laying around, for whatever reason- so why not put them to (sorta) good use?! Let us wallow in each others' misery, while simultaneously being thankful for just how great we all have it the rest of the time. But that's also no reason not to break out just a few overwrought descriptions (if you know what I mean)...So be prepared to bring your worst beers and your best purple prose. There will be no set time; just start posting as soon as you can muster the nerve.

Just a quick note: Let's keep in mind that this is all in good fun. We're probably gonna come close to the line with some of these, but let's not cross it; and always keep in mind to Respect Beer. It's just that sometimes stuff happens, ya know? Let's just not crap on the brewers who do their best to keep this demanding group happy and satisfied.

I'll be back later to join in on the fun- see y'all then!

Good morning BAs! Well, it’s a damp, chilly morning here in NW PA with rain forecasted for later today. Yesterday I managed to rake most of my neighbor’s oak leaves from my yard and burn them – the pile is still smoldering but this afternoon’s rain should finish that off. Today’s Turkey Beer is:

But wait (you say), how can Wookey Jack be a turkey beer? Well, because I screwed up and stored it with my stouts and RISs, unrefrigerated, for 2.5 years.

Now, in self-chastisement, I’m drinking it like a RIS.

And I find purple prose is not apropos. Despite the hops having bid adieu to the rye, the rye is maintaining its character. While I was expecting something akin to a Lovecraftian ichor, the fluid is slick and slightly oily, but not repulsive and doesn’t force its way back up my esophagus after kicking open my cardiac sphincter. In fact, if I had refrigerated this prior to consumption, it would still be better than any brown ale or AAL out there, and would kick ass on most session IPAs. So, rather than being dubbed a turkey, this could better be described as, perhaps, a Guinea hen or a Cornish hen or a pheasant in my glass.
