I was the same way a few months ago. I saw it in my Kroger a 6-pack for $4.99 and just was not sure to get it are not. I have heard the name many years but never tried it,went ahead and bought it. It was way better than I expected, not great but good. I say give it a shot.

Hamms is an AAL, so if you don't want an AAL you probably won't like it. That being said, its a very good AAL and IMHO an above average beer. Its better than bud and far far better than old Milwaukee.

From the guy who still has three AAL tall boys (Stag, PBR, and Bud Ice) in my fridge saved up for the AAL tasting thread - don't do it.

While I disagree with your distaste for Hamm's, I gotta say, I love Stag. One of my favorite AALs of all time (along with Narragansett, Olympia and Old Style). Too bad it's only available in the Midwest.

Did I say I hate Hamm's? I have a few friends who drink it. I just tend to bring PBR, or preferably Stag, so I can catch others sipping out of my true gold cans.

Stag is my favorite of the AAL line up. Just wish we got it in bottles around here. It seems to be 24 packs of cans only on this side of the state.

Hamms is better than most AAL's on most any Beer Advocates rating list it seems. At $12.99 a case, you can space them out over a month or so if you choose and no worries about freshness falloff either. Plus you're basically getting 4x the beer as a higher-end craft sixer, so the value is there as well.

Great replies here. I think bubseymour hit it on the head, spacing them out. I should clarify a few things here.
I wouldn't say I dislike AALs, as I said I drank them for twenty odd years. I got tired of beer that tasted like those nasty orange marshmallow circus peanuts that were around when I was a kid. These responses are far more helpful than reviews, as I'm guessing most of you know your way around AALs like I do. It's hard to get a good picture from a review that may have been written by a millennials who has never had anything but craft in their drinking experience.

At that price it's a steal AAL or not, and I'd say it's better than most as well. I happen to like Bud, AB beers for me tend to be a bit more carbonated, perhaps that's how it fools your palate. Miller and the like come off as a bit sweet. If I thought about it hard enough I'd probably opt for Gansett Pounders.

Ah, I misunderstood your comment. I thought by saying "don't do it" you meant "don't buy hamm's"

Also, for what it's worth I haven't seen Stag att all outside of the Midwest unfortunately. Cheers

Bought a 30 pack in the summer for $11.99 I believe. Chilled em', chugged a few, played some beer pong, really didn't mind the beer at all for an AAL. Switched to Two-Hearted for the rest of the evening.

So I did it. Ponied up the money and picked up a case of Hamm's today and just finished my first one ever. For not having had an AAL for over a year, (Christmas Eve 2016) I have to say it was like drinking water after a regular daily intake of IPAs and DIPAs. The last few weeks I've been working through Alchemist,Tree House and a wide array of Vermont DIPAs. Needless to say the Hamm's was pretty thin in comparison.

Having said that, It was pretty good beer.At least not bad anyway. I'm going to pick up a single Budweiser tomorrow and do a side by side. I can say that AALs probably won't make their way back into the rotation, but I wouldn't turn my nose up for a Hamm's in the future.Had Hamm's been in distribution in Maine twenty years ago it probably would have been a go to beer for me. At 12.99/24 it's a deceiving price for a lot of beer that isn't just nasty swill. I'd drink it again and would recommend it to anyone looking for a decent AAL.

trust me, you won’t find a better AAL at that price. You’ll find better AALs but NOT at that price. Plunk down $13 for Hamms and thank me later.

I've had one of Gordon Ramsey's custom burgers and yeah, it was good. Doesn't stop me from having the kids bring me something back when they make a McDonald's run. Hamm's has it's place and I don't turn up my nose.

I crave McDonald's from time to time. However, the internal physics reaction it sets off is a deterrent for me....

I recently bought Stag for the first time and I have to say Im really enjoying it! For $6.99 for a 12 pack its a great cheap beer to mix in.

I think those of us who came of age when BMC was pretty much the only option have a better appreciation for the craft options available today, and tend not to snub the AALs. I chose to switch to craft for several reasons. I was tired of crap ingredients (corn syrup), I have a little more disposable income today (not much more) than I did years ago, and I'm not a big fan of corporations at all. I'd rather support the little guy and know what is in and where my beer comes from.
As you get older quality over quantity is of increasing importance.
Let's face it, craft or not, there have always been really nasty beers out there. Hamm's is certainly not one of those.
As an old timer once said " Ain't no such thing as bad whiskey, just some better than others, that's all"

As someone who has spent most of my time since I became a craft drinker hating on any and all AAL's, my first taste of Hamm's was a bit of a revelation and its now a regular part of my drinking rotation, and while I would never say that I love any AAL, I certainly like it quite a bit, and it can't be beat for its price. I'd definitely say its a cut above any other AAL I've drank, and at its ABV, its really sessioable as well. Just don't go into thinking it will be amazing because its a go-to AAL for a lot of BA's and form your own opinion on it. At its price tag, its a cheap experiment at least. Personally, I think everybody who tends to spend a lot on beer needs a cheap go-to budget beer that is palatable and Hamm's has become that beer for me. I generally get it in 6 packs of 16 oz cans for three bucks and my wallet is thankful, but I'm also satisfied with the beer, for what it is.
