Burner Beers

I only keep beer on hand that I like, which means there's rarely any cheap lager in my fridge. I do keep approachable craft, summit makes a lot of stuff that just about everybody can enjoy and I have a local brewery, exile that makes a hefeweizen that people go nuts for.

 

I always keep something with broad appeal in the fridge...usually something like Pivo Pils. I've never met anyone that liked beer and didn't like Pivo.

 

I try to keep a six-pack of Narragansett at the camp during the summer for people who either just don't like the hoppy stuff I favor or for people who I, frankly, just don't like.

Sometimes I sneak one for myself.

 

Here, it's typically Rolling Rock Pony Bottles for the AAL folks. There's usually also some Yuengling Traditional Lager for those who prefer local, or who are either just beginning their flavorful beer journey or who are interested in trying something more flavorful than the AALs.

 

Yuengling is legitimately good, I buy it whenever I'm in their distro footprint.

 

'Gansett is good stuff! One of the best AALs out there, imo.

 

Yeah, it fits a sweet spot for when I just want a cold one but have no desire to have an IPA or a high ABV Stout, etc.

 

I really don't keep anything in my fridge for others, but on the rare occasion I host, folks tend to bring stuff over as I provide the food. I may occasionally stock my fridge up with a little 12 pack of Sierra Nevada or a sixer or two of PBR tall boys.

I suppose if you want to count it, I do keep PBR in my fridge sometimes, but not really for guests. It makes a good beer to simmer the brats in, to baste the porkchops with, and to otherwise consume while attending the grill or having a campfire chat.

 

I've got a Michelob Ultra and two Miller Lites in my fridge leftover from when my mother-in-law last visited. It will likely stay there until she visits again. It is a bit offensive she brings that swill over, even though I had a homebrewed AAL on tap at the time.

Typically, though, I have some approachable homebrew on hand that I need to get rid of when people come over. It's a win-win: free beer for them, and I get to brew more often.

Interesting that you've seen that happening.

That's pretty much what some marketing research data collected for Boston Brewing would suggest. While this was a few years ago they found that the most frequent drinker of more flavorful beers was an AAL drinker who wanted a temporary change of pace and chose a craft beer.

 

Sam 76 has become my "burner beer". Light and refreshing enough for someone that isn't into craft yet tasty enough that it's not "water" for someone that drinks craft beer exclusively. I'm not going to buy shit AAL beer just to satisfy someone. I want to show them something new.

 

Old Milwakee and Miller Lite are usually in the refrigerator for company although they somehow gravitate to the wife's Spotted Cow for some reason....I'll drink most anything so it doesn't matter

 

I don't do this, but great idea. Better than having a non-craft drinker grab one of your cherished craft beers, take one taste, and dump it.

 

I always keep AALs around so it's usually Hamm's, Bud or PBR. I happen to like all three better than the other beers that are in this class.

 

My guests are treated to only the finest. If they don't like the beer I keep on hand, they're welcome to choose from among my extensive collection of wines and spirits. I'll even whip up a fruity cocktail on request, provided I have the ingredients.

Just don't ask me for a Bud Light.
