For me I just always suggest going EXTREMELY local and give me any style they offer. Nobody has time to go through my beer list. If they go state-only locals, it's a rare miss on stuff I haven't seen before.

Good evening NBS and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the start today.
Tough decisions in hiring, I know the feeling.
Today’s offering is from Hitachino Brewing a Red Rice ale aged in barrels from cherry timber
Appearances light Crimson and wonderful carbonation very gentle
Smells a touch Citic hints of that cherry wood and the rice has a very interesting graininess
Taste is initially sweet then quickly shifts to tart with a grainy component that is light and at the same time very reminiscent of owed Bruin
Mouth feel is delicate initially tart pallet response accordingly the finish lingers semi sweet and delightful
Overall complex offering I think the value is in the initial ale
    the wood treatment is excellent
This is our last day here in Kyoto and looking forward to NBS next week from home have a great week

NBS beer #2 is a biggie.

Enjoy within 25 years. I need a T-shirt with that on it.

    Bommen & Granaten

    Brouwerij De Molen
    English Barleywine / 15.20% ABV

    4.09/5 rDev +4.1% | Score: 3.93
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

    Dated 20/08/12 15.2% abv

L- The beer pours tan and murky. The color falling slightly darker than your average apple cider. The head is about half a finger of large off white bubbles. The head recedes to a thin ring with no lacing.
S- The nose is pretty typical of an English Barleywine. Dark fermenting fruits and of course some medicinal alcohol whose presence is unsurprising given the strength.
T- The palate is quite fruity up front with plums and a bit of raisin. Mid palate the fruits begin to fade little leaving a subtle alcohol burn. At the very back of the palate I'm getting a bit of molasses leaving a slight lingering sweetness as my belly warms.
F- Mouthfeel overall is medium/medium heavy. Carbonation is very light, almost but not quite flat. Consequently the beer coats and lingers on the tongue.
O-Big flavors and ABV in a surprisingly smooth drinking package. I'd like a bit more carbonation , but a beer I could revisit on a cold night.

Yup, one of our biggest stores in this state, but I do love Craft Beer Cellar when I'm in Waterbury, selection might be a tad smaller, but service is stellar and IMO, one of our cleanest bottle shops in this state.

However, I gotta admit, I have liked the selection a lot at Natural Provisions since it's right around the corner from where I work. Jackie does a great job of bringing in beers and always ensures Beer Advocate shelf tags are the only shelf tags up.

I haven't been to Natural Provisions before. I really like the selection at Craft Beer Cellar, but the parking situation in that area gives me a facial tic as I drive around in circles over those godforsaken speed tables.

    Howdy NBSites!
Another week, another set of wild temperature swings, delicious beers, work and other random stuff including bottling a Special Bitter that I hope to review here in a couple weeks (if my patience holds out)! My birthday was this past week and since I have been really busy lately and had French class all day and was getting over being sick, it didn't amount to much. Nothing wrong with that I suppose. The problem, though, is that I didn't get to have a proper celebration beer. So that's what I'm doing this evening.
My beery brother in arms up in these parts was beyond kind in thinking of me when he had a chance to grab a few of these and so I have the immense pleasure (I hope) of trying CBS today. Those are words I never thought I'd be typing so my hat's off to you, Jacob, ya Jerk!

It pours a murky jet black with a solid slab of brown head on top. The aroma and flavor are both roasty as could be but on the sweeter end of the spectrum, without any char or bitterness. The maple comes through a lot more in the flavor than in the smell but it is there throughout (moreso as it warms). This is a top notch stout. Really something special.

Here is my review if'n you care.

    Cheers!

Busy Sunday, and finally settling down for a new beer.

This is Fairhope Brewing’s fifth anniversary golden barleywine aged in rye whiskey barrels.

It’s on the expensive side and a little one noted in aroma and flavor but very enjoyable.

Poured from 22 oz bomber with no visible bottle date.

A: Lightly hazy golden yellow with one finger off white head. Decent retention and moderate lacing.

S: Rye whiskey, raisins, dates, and caramel. Lots of sweet whiskey with subtle hints of piney hops.

T: Nice bite from the rye whiskey. Some sweetness with raisins, dates, and caramel. Fairly subtle as far as hops go, and typical of an English style barleywine.

M: Full bodied with light carbonation. Finish is a little sweet and fairly dry.

O: Very nice BA barleywine. A little low on ABV for the style, and pricey, but a nice effort from Fairhope none the less.

T- Mildly tart, tannis, red wine, oak, currants, berries, funky/leather.

    M- Smooth, light body, dry.

O- 10% ABV is hidden well, an interesting take on a saison with fruit.

Ugh, you're not the only one getting facial tics driving around trying to find a parking spot in Waterbury.

I gave up on going to Pearl Street, too much dust on beers, service seemed like no one really cared there, and no one seemed to care about the putting up of the ratebeer shelf tags. I haven't been in there since God knows when - I really wrote that place off.

What's nice about Natural Provisions is that I've noticed they tend to get in the 4 packs of what is going to hit the area quicker than a lot of the other stores. Service is always good there too. Jackie the beer manager cares! And she's almost always willing to talk with anyone about new beers to get in.

Bell's Whiskey Barrel Aged Cherry Stout, 9.3% ABV. Pours dark brown to light black with a slight tan head. Aroma is whiskey and cherries, taste is sweet cherries, slightly tart, not much bitterness, and not much whiskey taste. Decent mouthfeel, overall nearly outstanding. I liked this better than Central Waters BBA Cherry Stout, which was too tart.

Today's tasty 'n delicious beer is Scorched Earths "The Bitter Chocolatier", an Imperial Chocolate 'n Oatmeal stout, coming in at a smooth 9.1%.
This looks good just pouring, thick dark brown with a brown head, decent retention and good lacing. Aroma is mostly chocolate. Taste has some chocolate, roasted malts, a hint of coffee and caramel. Smooth 'n creamy texture, carbonation is spot on for the style. I had this a year ago and gave it a 3.78 grade, I blew that one. I updated my score today, let's call it a 4.08. I would certainly like to see how this would work after a year in a bourbon or rye whiskey barrel. Nudge, nudge, wink, wink Mr. Brewmaster.

    Beau’s Three Knocks

This next beer is American rather than German, but it’s a German style - a Sticke Alt.

It’s a very pretty red/brown. It’s quite sweet in a sugary caramel way, but the finish is very bitter. The spicy hop presence is huge here. It’s very, very clean. Aged with oak, but I can’t tell where the oak ends and the hops start.

This is my second malty and hoppy lager today, but I liked the Donator Doppelbock a lot more.

Thank you. We try, but getting the ball rolling isn’t too hard (and can be fun). Without the participation of all, though, the thread wouldn’t be much. This thing has been running nigh on 13 years, and I have only been on the site for about a third of it.

Also figured I’d complete the circle and include @utopiajane - who along with @cavedave handed the reins to us current caretakers, after being handed them from others.

Cheers to all who make this thread entertaining and informative!

It's definitely a worthwhile thread most every week. Based on comments here I've easily purchased a half dozen beers (or more) that were well worth drinking but that I might normally have passed up.

New Beer Sunday: A New American Porter (using American Hops)

Evenin’ NBSers with a special recommendation for people who'd like to try American hops in beers such as a Porter. Also special thanks to @lordofthewiens for his thoughtful and thought provoking start up this morning.

Well the weather here continues weird. After a few warmish days and a chilly one, last night we had a brush with a wide-spread snow-sleet-rain storm that left some more Northwesterly areas of PA with 8+ inches and dropped about 1-2” here. Once the storm was finished (long before dawn) the temperatures rose rapidly to an afternoon high in the upper 40s. The partly sunny streets were just partly wet here and there by 10 am and some were entirely dry by noon.

This evening’s new beer is from Boulevard and is an American Porter called Flora Obscura.

As usual my review, which is subject to change until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=drtth

The flavor/aroma profiles are filled with American Hops that create some citrus, tropical fruit and pine. The malt brings the customary dark roast malt flavors of chocolate, coffee and a bit of caramel sweetness to the party but this contribution is playing second fiddle here. The finish is mostly dry and slightly bitter from some roasted malt. This beer is a nice change of pace from the regular American Porter in the nature of it’s hops and flavor profile. I’ll be having it again but it doesn’t knock the Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald off the top of my have-it-again list.

Time for a break from TV and the Olympics, etc. so for a new American Musical Original Cast recording I'm putting Fiddler On The Roof on the player tonight. Included in the original cast was Zero Mostel.

    Tradition

    Cheers, all!
