This is my first stout with Tonka bean and I certainly enjoyed it very much, not just because of that very interesting herbal/spicy character that the Tonka bean adds but also because all of the other flavours are in such great balance as well. That's what makes a great additive stout to me, when nothing really stands out too much and all the different flavours just intermingle harmoniously. The more complex the stout, the more difficult this is to pull off, and the more enjoyable it is if done right. And this is certainly a very enjoyable stout!

Pours an oily, pitch black coloration with a medium, creamy head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, marzipan, slight perfume and a certain herbal/spicy note reminiscent of cinnamon, nutmeg and even woodruff, which I'm sure comes from the tonka bean. Taste is similarily complex, being dominated by roasted, caramel malt, vanilla and dark, bitter chocolate, with hints of coffee, licorice, marzipan and that sligthly herbal/spicy note reminiscent of cinnamon / nutmeg / woodruff. Marvelous balance, with a slight bitterness and just a tiny hint of booze coming through in the aftertaste. Thick, creamy, almost oily mouthfeel with a rich body and low carbonation. The very high ABV is almost undetectable, except maybe for a very slight warming sensation in the aftertaste.

Well NBS I have to work this afternoon but this is one of the rare Sundays I have to work that I was both (a) up in time and (b) able to find a low abv (3.8%) beer in the cellar so I could join all of the wonderful folks here!

Overall this would be a better brew for summer than a cold early March day. Not bad but nothing great, overall this came out at 3.3 / -7.3%

12oz can poured into a pint glass
A: Hazy brownish yellow with a one-finger head
S: Primarily tea & lemon, a bit of wheat beer underneath
T: Like an Arnold Palmer. Tea/lemonade, fairly sweet, again just a bit of wheat beer underneath
M: Light-bodied, sweet, just a bit of sour
O: To me this is more of an alcoholic lemonade/twisted tea sort of a gig than beer. Not bad, would be good during summer, but not doing much for me either

    Cheers!

That one was an interesting and IMO only okay, and not one I would've thought about aging.
Am I mistaken or are your beers from Oliver Brewing in Baltimore (typo missing the "r")?

New big beer with coffee round #2
I purchased this beer last Friday as part of a mix six. It's the first time I have seen it on a shelf here & I felt inclined to see what the fuss is about.
    The review:
12oz bottled 10/27/17 (97 days ago) poured into a tulip glass at fridge temp 12% ABV. The beer pours nearly black with red tinted mocha brown head.
The head recedes to a film and medium ring around the glass leaving a little lacing. The aroma presents oak, bourbon, rye and vanilla. The taste is porter first with roasted malt gently giving way to the barrel, coffee and vanilla flavors. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, adequately carbonated and dry in the finish. There is no real bitterness, nor does the vanilla or barrel cause things to drift too sweet. Overall, very good. The bourbon and rye barrels compliment the base beer and create a very enjoyable and complex sipper.

I'm always surprised to see reviews of well executed BBA beers being slammed for lack of liquor presence. I can make a boilermaker out of any beer, but I really appreciate, and will purchase, a beer that integrates the barrel seamlessly. This one was quite nice. That wraps up my new beers for today. Cheers & enjoy the new beer in your glass today friends!

Hmmm, where to begin? First off, it's not a bad beer at all. However, there's banana and clove on the nose with such prominence that one could be forgiven for thinking this is a Weissbier. The banana lasts on the palate, as well.

Lime and salt make a back-third appearance. Feel is moderate, a little thick for the style, but still lively.

Overall an enjoyable brew, but it doesn't approach the better examples of the style.

    a) Pours a cloudy bright, light golden with a dense white head that lasts and laces.
    s) Abundant hops, brighter than, but not far from Dales. More floral, with light fruit like lime or orange creamsicle.
    t) Complex mix of fruity, floral, and grassy. Complex, sweet, yet not at all cloying. Always scrubbing and fresh, with a mineral, cleansing finish.
    f) Feels and tastes more interesting than expected than the 5 abv. My favorite of 3 tasted from the brewer. Another day walked around Munich with it. A big beer for big squares and avenues.

    At Intercontinental Berlin...
    a) pours a orange, amber, copper clear body that raises a creamy, big foamy head that fades slowly and laces massively.
    s) Smells of sweet german bread, with mild sweet malt, wheat, topped by grassy and then floral herbal hops, Bright bake shop.
    t) Like Dales Pale, more of a hoppy APA, juicy malt, doughy, sun-dried straw, malt, big grassy hops, floral and finally -
    spicy.
    f) Finish dry crisp, bitter hops, mid weight and carb. Clean finish.
    o) More Dales like APA than IPA Good

Crazy fruit salad bomb of an IPA.
    a) An almost impossibly clouded and crowded with particulate fruit punch body, that sprouts a heat that falls to fast.
Most particulate seen in a beer.
    s) Smells of its tropical fruit parts: Melon, mango, papaya, grapefruit. Fruit Salad!
    t) Taste follows the aroma. like it came from a blender, it's juicy, with sweet, zesty, blaring pops of fruit flavors. Beer as trix cereal. that's barely tempered by hop bitterness.
    f) Juicy is he word. Original including the feel. Smooth, creamy mouthfeel with a mid body and carbonation. Boozy too. It's the fruit punch bowl bomb of a beer.

Another favorite from the brewer. Hempy.
    a) Pours a very clouded light golden body that sprouts a foamy, lasting and lacing white head.
    s) Aromas of hemp mixed with citrus flesh and pine resin on malt backbone.
    t) Follows smell and suitably bigger and more complex. The hemp intensity is balanced by a mineral feel.
    f) Bright well carbonated, scrubbing mouthfeel, and than mineral clean up in the finale.
    o) Best beer to enjoy with hemp?

Maybe it was enjoying this at Paul Sully in hip Berlin, but I thought it a find PA.
    A) pours a hazy amber goldenwith a one-finger, foamy, white head that laces just fine. Floaters.
    S) Orange surprise among the standard caramel malt bill.
    T) More fruit that most PAs without being too sweet: orange, marmalade rind, caramel, toast.
    F) Mid weight and carbonation.
    O) Berlin's craft beer has to start somewhere!
Not as good as Progusta | BraufactuM... but still just fine.

Terrapin moo hop stout. I had a lot of trepidation buying a beer called moo hop but it turned out to be a great surprise. Solid black color, about medium carbonation with a really nice creamy feel. The chocolate leaves a coating in the mouth that lingers a long while. Aroma is choclate, heavy cream, malt, and a bit of black coffee. Taste follows almost exactly, chocolate is strongest but all the other flavors follow through. This overall turned out to be a really pleasant surprise, an excellent feel, taste , and something I would look for again[IMG]

L - 3-finger pillowy head atop a translucent yellow body.

    S - citrus, pine, a bit herbal.

T - very herbal to start. Biscuity malt. Some citrus. Moderate bitterness, low sweetness, low booze.

F - medium body and carb.

O - I feel like they needed to use more Mosaic on their dry hop, as I’m not really tasting it here. The boil hops are coming through more. Still, this is a tasty brew that would make for a dangerous summer crusher.

New Coffee Oatmeal Stout Sunday (Week 680)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. What a strange weather week. the Nor'easter did this crazy thing in my county and some areas around 700 - 1,000 ft. elev. got very little snow, as heavy rain mixed in at times and kept totals down, Some places not far from here in many directions were reporting snow and blizzard while it was barely doing anything in this swath of territory. Our local HVW weather guys were all kinds of excited, as was my son (who graduated with degree in meteorology).. Oh did I mention some parts of my county got 40 "?

Great opening today,. loosely about dreams, which I understand was a way to make a political theme in the guise of talking about something else, and I enjoyed it much, since it was so well written. It does however make me think of dreams rather than politics, as I am the strange case of someone with recurring dreams for my entire life. These dreams aren't identical but there are four basic themes and plots they follow, and some repeat much more often than others. Anyway, just want to comment how strange, and in many ways legitimate, is the reality of dreams. Funny, I just recorded myself two days ago reading a rant poem I wrote based on one of the recurring dreams.

Today's beer is one I forgot I have. Big thanks to @Oldladyfingers , sorry it got lost in the sauce in the cellar, or I woulda cracked it much fresher. Earl Coffee Oatmeal Stout, from Hill Farmstead, pkg.ed 5/6/16. Stock pic-

Coffee is first to greet nose in this med. strength aroma. It is not at all artificial or burnt like sometimes it is in this style, very tasty med. roast aroma. Excellent brown bread with chocolate sprinkles and hints of cream and very light roast round this into a delectable bouquet.

Med./full strength taste, led by more roast than anticipated, a sturdy bitter and not acrid backbone on which bright and strong coffee notes, dark toast, cream, and hints of herbal bitter are balanced well. Quite delicious.

Light on palate, med. carb. light bodied (perhaps a touch thin for style), with an excellent deep finish that never gets too bitter and stays clean.

Simple, well made beer from a complex, genius brewer, Shaun Hill. Hard to imagine this has lost anything since it was fresher, no oxidation notes, and the coffee is bright and not vegetal. Recommended for sure.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

It's always a pleasure reading your reviews, and I'm really glad you've been enjoying the box. There should be one more, if memory serves :slight_smile:.

Just an fyi on that Greenpoint beer- there's some rye in there. It's not so much that it really makes itself known, but just enough for an accent. Maybe that's the peppery/spicy quality that you were picking up. Great job, and enjoy the Sunday!

From Czig Meister Brewing in Hackettstown NJ The Huntsman a Kolsch. This beer is brewed with Pilsner Malt, Kolsch yeast and German Noble Hops. This brew was poured from a 12 oz can into a pint glass. Every other Kolsch I've drank has been clear This one isn't its a murky gold with a thin white head. The aroma is malt with a hint of citrus. The taste is grainy and a bit bitter. The mouthfeel is light the finish is also bitter. The beer is balanced and no flavor or aroma stands out. The Huntsman is a enjoyable beer and at 4.8% ABV very drinkable. It's a nice brew I'm just not sure it's a Kolsch.

    Odell Settle Down Brown
    6.5% ABV

I could almost recreate the scene on the label in my basement except my dog is in no mood to help and my kitchen has better lighting anyway. This is my first New Beer Sunday of 2018, and what a year it has been. I took off the first 54 days from drinking so that I could train for my 20 Mile trail race only to get derailed with a lower back strain followed by a mild bout with the flu.

Today’s new beer is from Odell, and it’s a brown ale — a style which nobody really cares for on this site.

Look: Somewhere between copper, amber, and ruby with a khaki head that settles to a nice film with light lacing.

Aroma: Spicy hops bring an earthiness while chocolate malts bringing out some much needed sweetness with subtle toffee notes.

Taste: Spicy and woody, I would call this a hop bomb but there is a nice toffee and caramel malt precensce.

    Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, dry.

Overall: The 6.5% warms the throat a bit, and overall I find this a bit hop heavy but there is plenty of chocolate, caramel, and toffee to add a little bit of balance.

    Tired y'all.

Coming up on 24 hours now and a frustrating night at work. Endocrine stuff still puts me a bit on edge.
Spent the last couple of days in Portland with my dad exploring the food and drinks that that neat little city has to offer. Ex Novo was the first brewery we visited while we were there, and I enjoyed the couple of brews we tried while we were there. I grabbed a couple of bottles of the stuff we sampled, and some cans of their flagship IPA: Eliot.
I had only intended to grab two cans, but the guy sent me off with a full four pack. That'll work too, I suppose!

Pouring a classic golden amber body with decent but not crisp clarit and a beautiful finger of white soapy head that eventually settles down into the classic veil and bunch at the edges pattern with enough lace left for some forced metaphor involving doilies.

The nose carries seductive promises of kiwi and other green tropical fruits. Sweet and delicate and immensely inviting.

Unfortunately the flavour fails to carry through the promise of the nose. Where the aroma was all intricate fine point work and smoulderingly seductive raised eyebrows (mild shoutout to the cold open for the week), a lush verdant landscape ripe with fruits and flowers, the flavour pulls the leaves aside and reveals... an empty stony field.
The depth... peaks and valleys promised on the nose revert to a flat monotone on the tongue like a three dimensional landscape rendered into 2D and layered over with a matte shellac. Grassy hops with a pleasant but not exciting dulled bitterness backed by straw malts.

A light drinkable body is carried by a pleasant effervescence and lets me part with it on enjoyable terms.

I dunno man. Maybe I'm just so tired that I'm perceiving this differently than everyone else, but occams razor would suggest that I just feel differently about it. I had intended to pick up a couple of these cans to throw one or two in with my BIF box, but at this point I'm probably going to use that postage weight elswhere. We'll see if I change my mind after trying another one within a different context. It's not a bad beer by any means, I just don't feel it lives up to its reputation, nor to its intro.
I will, however, say that I appreciate Ex Novo's approach, with their stated intention of funneling their profits to organizations that can use said funds to better the world we all live in. Dig it. Also, I enjoyed the other offerings I had on tap moreso than this, so as a brewery they may well still end up in the box I allude to above.

Cheers y'all, here's to something tasty awaiting you in your glass, and to good family whether by blood or by choice!

Yessir and also coriander. The rye does make an accent but it is not strong and I would not hazard a guess as to how much they used but imo it added crispness and an slight underlying firmness to the crackery malt. The coriander was earthy but not obtrusive also. I loved the green pepper flavor in this one. That is one of the greatest hops of all times imo. The one that gives green pepper. I also feel bad because I need new glasses. i read the name of the beer wrong at first. =( What a great box. Thank you. One more to go.

Sloop Brewing's Liquid Sorcery is an IPA with a citrus pop. -deeply cloudy, but a pretty yellow orange color and a 1.5 cm foam cap. The aroma is cara cara orange and a floral aspect. The flavor is deeply tropical and there is a hint of mint. The mouthfeel is very smooth and consistent. Hop bitterness is light to moderate. This is a very fresh and flavorful IPA. I'll be returning to Elizaville for a Sloop visit soon.
