Not sure if this is the right place to post. I am hosting a share tomorrow for 4 people. I have a whale that I have mixed feelings about serving because it is only 375ml. Thats about 3 oz a person. Doesn't seem like I should bother at all with that bottle. That seems more like something you would share with 2-3 people. Should I just scrap it for that reason? Torn on this.

If it was something I was dying to crack and share, I'd go for it. Otherwise it may not get shared at all:wink:. Besides, who's gonna turn down 3 oz of great beer?

Jokes aside, if it’s a special bottle to you, maybe save it for one or two more people. But at the same time, slipping it into a more expansive tasting with a few more people, 3oz can be a perfect size pour.

You are thinking to hard on this one.

3oz pours are fine for a share.

A 375ml bottle is perfectly fine for a share among 4-5 people. However, if it's really special to you and you are having mixed feelings, save it.

Most share's I've done pours are 1-2 oz so three is great.

To get a taste of a beer at all, I don't bother with less than 3-4 ounces, and 5oz is my minimum for a review. With 1-2oz it would be tough to form much of an opinion, such as whether you like it enough to buy some, and with a whale even a 3oz pour is just throwing it away IMHO unless something priced like Utopias dictates the pour size.

Your call your beer. I think 3 oz is fine. A bar I frequent has Thursday get togethers, people bring bottles or the guy putting it on brings samples from breweries. Normally you will get 2 to 3 oz depending on how many people are there. I can tell on 2 or 3 oz if I want to hunt that beer down, but not going to rate it on that.

Everyone so far has had a valid opinion. I think it depends on the purpose of the share - to taste a rare/good beer for the potential purpose of tracking down a bottle or just to say that you've tried it, three oz is fine. If people are trying to rate/review it, don't bother cracking the bottle. Just MHO.

Do the other people have a big interest in this particular beer?

What style is the beer? Or what is the actual beer? (unless you are purposely keeping that info a secret)

I'd be fine with 3 or so ounces of a big beer. If it was a wild ale or similar "lighter" style I usually want more to really figure things out.

Not really, but the flavor of whiskey is more intense and easier to pick up the flavor with a smaller amount.
